What is this course?
The University of Montana offers a comprehensive 6-credit Field Geology Course in geologically spectacular western Montana. In 2005, the 41/2-week course will base out of Dillon, Montana region for the first 2 1/2 weeks, and will then move to the Sun River Canyon near Choteau, Montana for the last two weeks. Final deadline for registration is TBA, although interested students should apply as soon as possible so we can plan appropriately. Why southwestern Montana? SW Montana recreation; What to do in your spare time: Dillon, Montana offers a very wide range of interesting outdoor recreational possibilities for you to explore on your time off. These include worldclass fly-fishing, hiking in some of southwestern Montana’s high-country, mountain biking an endless network of backcountry roads and trails, boating on some of the local rivers. During late May and early June, it’s even possible to find some high-country snow for back-country skiing, although the approach can be plenty strenuous!

  • A zipped file containing Google Earth placemarks for all of the localities visited this summer is now available . This free program accesses 3D aerial photography for the entire world! Once unzipped, a double click on the file will open Google Earth (you must first download and install it on your machine) and allow navigation to the 660 locations. Black Hills, South Dakota and adjacent parts of Wyoming DATES: Annually in June and July, Summer Session I ( June 13, 2005 - July 15, 2005). COURSE AND CREDITS: Geology 41092 (undergraduate) and 51092 (graduate) carry six semester hours of credit. This course is required for all B.S. candidates in the Department of Geology and for entering graduates students who have not completed a Field Camp requirement as part of their undergraduate study.
PREREQUISITES: Petrology and Structural Geology
SUGGESTED BACKGROUND COURSES: Students would also benefit from classes in Earth Dynamics, Earth History, Mineralogy, Paleontology, and Geomorphology, although these are not required. PROGRAM OF STUDY: The Black Hills present an unrivaled opportunity for geologic studies. Students examine a wide variety of rocks, geologic structures, geomorphic features, and mineral deposits. Geologic mapping and interpretation is strongly emphasized and the instruction includes field and surveying techniques, and mapping on aerial photographs and topographic base maps. Some field exercises take place in the Powder River Basin and Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming, and Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. The fundamental purpose of this course is to teach geology in the field. Because geology in the field involves creation and interpretation of geologic maps, various field techniques are introduced in this course as necessary for the map-making exercises. The Black Hills of South Dakota provide probably as many good examples of different types of geology within a short distance of each other as any area in the United States. The stratigraphic section of the Hills is unusually complete, varied, and well-exposed. The geomorphology is classic. Opportunities for paleontologic study are also numerous, with excellent examples of the use of paleontology as an aid to geologic mapping.

Fall, spring. Physical geology is the study of the materials the earth is made of and the processes that occur both on and beneath the surface. The course heightens awareness of how the earth continually changes, the rates of geologic change, and the finite character of the earth's resources. The course is designed to help students to develop their own views of how human activity impacts geologic processes, and how geologic processes affect human activity. ( NATURAL SCIENCE LAB NOTE: Geology and Geography are considered to be in the same discipline.

Geology and Geological Engineering Field Camp (GEGN316) Dear Prospective Field Camp Student, Thank you for your inquiry concerning the Geological Engineering Field Course at the Colorado School of Mines. I have enclosed a description of the course and information on the dates, costs and equipment involved. This year the course begins in Moab, Utah on Sunday evening, May 10 and ends on Friday afternoon, June 19. The state of Colorado does not subsidize non-Colorado residents, so the course can be very expensive at $2784 for tuition alone. We have financial aid to help students from the Colorado School of Mines, but because of the fund sources, financial aid is not available to students from outside CSM except under special circumstances. I welcome students from other schools to the camp and those who come find the course to be enjoyable and valuable, but I know that the cost makes it difficult. If you are a Colorado resident, you pay at the resident rate and the course is a good deal. This year I anticipate the course will have about 30 students from CSM and three or four from other schools. The CSM students all know each other well and so are eager to meet new people. Most non-CSM students on the course assimilate into the group easily within the first week. Our students have taken courses in Structural Geology, Stratigraphy and Petrology and a Field Methods prior to the field course. You need to have these basic courses, but we can work with you if you have not had a formal field methods course and bring you up to speed quickly.

Objectives
The Master's program in Geology distinctively emphasizes catastrophism as well as uniformitarianism in its many areas of application. The department stresses sedimentary processes and their effects in the stratigraphic record. The school is ideally located for the study of various geomorphic, tectonic, and sedimentary processes. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (a desert area just east of San Diego) and the Grand Canyon are some of the areas which have been used for graduate field work. The geology program prepares students for careers such as: geologist with oil and coal industry, teacher of geology or earth science in high school or college, writer or lecturer in parachurch work, research geologist with governmental agency, independent consultant in the private sector. Prerequisites Requirements Thirty-three (33) semester hours of work beyond the Bachelor's degree are required for the M.S. degree. These are the standard thirty (30) hours for the M.S. degree, and the supplementary three (3) hours for ICR's additional studies:
