College Geology Online
The first thing you should know, though, is that even the best online course materials can't substitute for a real education. Science is maintained by people ruthlessly checking each other's work, and it's transmitted to new scientists the same way. The second thing you should know is that while teachers are making their lecture notes and other data available to the world, they are not expecting questions from the public. Their students ask plenty already. When you visit these sites, pretend that you're sneaking into their classes and don't want to be noticed. If you ever have a question, leave the professors alone and ask me instead Note to Outside Searchers Finally, many sites disappear after the semester is over, and more schools are putting course materials online all the time. So my list is not the last word. (Links were checked in November 2004 and some courses have been dropped.) The

Courses in Geology
A Geo 100N Planet Earth (3)
Introduction to the Geological Sciences, including evidence for the major processes and significant events in the origin, history and present condition of the solid Earth. Major topics include geological time, earthquakes, volcanism, plate tectonics and the origin and movement of continents and oceans, mountain building, evidence for past climate change, including glaciation, formation of the earth-moon system, earth resources and geological constraints and consequences of energy use. Emphasis is placed on understanding why we think we know things about the Earth, to enable the student to understand common features of rocks and minerals and the larger-scale solid Earth, and to provide a lifetime background for making informed judgments on increasing number of public issues requiring geological knowledge. Fall and spring semesters. [NS] A Geo 100F Planet Earth (3)
A Geo 100F is the writing intensive version of A Geo 100N; only one may be taken for credit. Fall semester only. [NS WI] A Geo 106 Physical Geology Laboratory (1)
Elementary classification of minerals and rocks, and their identification in hand specimen. Introduction to geological maps and sections, both as sources of geological information and as aids in the solution of practical problems. Guided and self-guided field trips to building stones of downtown Albany. This course is required for majors in Geology and Earth Science. One lab each week. Corequisite(s): A Geo 100N or 100F. Fall and spring semesters.

  • 115 Evolution: Dinosaurs to Darwin
  • 135 Introduction to Oceanography ... B. Selleck How do geologic processes and events directly influence human societies? How have humans changed the earth? Fundamental geologic concepts such as plate tectonics, geologic time, and surficial processes are used as a basis for understanding a variety of natural geologic hazards including earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, floods, and coastal erosion. Real-world examples of the interplay between human activities and the environment include soil and groundwater contamination, mineral and energy resource development, and threats to the earth's biodiversity. Also, the course takes a closer look at the geologic record of global change and the debate over global warming. This course is an interdisciplinary approach to environmental geosciences. Three lectures per week and a weekly field experience. Return to Course List 105 Megageology - Origin and Evolution of the Planet Earth A. Goldstein

    Steven D. Sheriff, Chairman
The Department of Geology offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees; also available is a bachelor degree with a teaching major in earth sciences. All degree programs in the department involve field work and a combination of applied and theoretical approaches requiring sound general background in other sciences. High School Preparation: In addition to the general requirements for University admission, recommended high school preparation includes as much mathematics and science as possible.
    Special Degree Requirements
Refer to graduation requirements listed previously in the catalog. See index. Science courses designed for education majors may not be counted toward Geology Department science requirements. Geology courses and allied science courses must be taken for a traditional grade. The Upper-division Writing Expectation must be met by successfully completing an upper-division writing course from the approved list in the Academic Policies and Procedures section of this catalog or by completing GEOL 499. See index. The Geology Department offers four options for students wishing to major in geology. The first option is a highly flexible program designed for those who wish to double major in another science or who simply wish to acquire a broad education of their own design. It features a minimum number of specifically required courses in geology and other sciences. The remaining three options are designed for students who desire a more defined path through our curriculum or who are seeking certification to teach. Some paths in each of the options may require prerequisites that are not specifically listed or required.
