COASTAL MARINE GEOLOGY
The Coastal Marine Geology Section conducts research on the Maine Coast and provides technical information to other state agencies, local governments, businesses and the public involved in the coastal zone. Marine geologists conduct applied research and mapping on subjects such as beach and dune geology, nearshore nourishment sources, dredged material disposal sites, marine habitats, and strategic minerals. The Section also conducts coastal hazard studies related to sea-level rise and measures rates of beach erosion and bluff retreat. Marine geologists evaluate shoreline types for sensitivity to marine oil spills. Research is often collaborative with other state and univeristy scientists and uses geological and geophysical methods of sampling and surveying shoreline and underwater areas. Research results are regularly published in reports, maps and scientific journals as well as presented at public meetings. The coast of Maine has 5600 kilometers (3480 miles) of tidally-influenced shoreline and is the third longest in the United States. There are about 3500 islands included in the shoreline length. Mapping has estimated that about 2% of the coast (120 km or 75 miles) has beaches. About half of this distance is made up of sandy beaches and the other half is made up of coarser gravel and boulder beaches. The latter category is commonly pocket beaches, of which there are over 200 pocket barrier beaches that front coastal wetlands. Most large sandy beaches occur along the southern coast between Kittery and Cape Elizabeth, south of Portland. A few miles of sandy beaches also occur in midcoast Maine near the mouth of the Kennebec River.

The Geologic Survey
by
Donald M. Hoskins The Pennsylvania Geologic Survey, officially known today as the Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey Pennsylvania in the 1830s fermented with activity. Population rapidly increased, industry expanded, and anthracite was proving useful in the manufacture of iron. Internal developments the building of turnpikes, canals and railroads and the creation of a system of Common Schools were the concerns of the governors and legislators of Pennsylvania. They assiduously believed that internal developments and public education were necessary if the resources of the Commonwealth were to be successfully developed. On March 30, 1836, the General Assembly of Pennsylvania received notice from Gov. Joseph Ritner that he had signed its bill establishing "a geological and mineralogical survey of the state with a view to determine the order, succession, arrangement, relative position ... of the several strata or geological formations within the state, and to discover and examine all beds and deposits of ores, coals, clays, marls ... as may be necessary to make a full and complete geological and mineralogical survey of the state." The bill became Act 73 of 1836.

Outline of the Geological Survey of Hokkaido
The Geological Survey of Hokkaido was established in 1950 in the Department of Commerce and Industry, Hokkaido Government, in order to develop abundant geologic resources in the vast land of Hokkaido. At first, this survey was involved in researching for minerals, coal, petroleum, all of which are necessary for reconstruction of Japan after World War II. Since then, internationnalization of mineral resource, diversification of energy utilization and more conscious of conservation of the land and the environment, have demanded wider range of geological researching. In response to such change in social circumstances and demand from society, the survey has been studying not only fuel and metal deposits, but also development and preservation of water resources, geothermal hot springs. During the researching, the survey has also been making geological maps which are basis of various researching. As the results, Hokkaido has become the remarkable area where geological mapping on a scale of 1:50,000 is the most advanced in Japan. Recently, researching for resource development and environmental problem fitting for local needs is on demand. Furthermore, researching for the development of new resources in the sea, and surveys of active faults, are of importance.

The functions of the bureau cover the exploration of the country to gather information as to geological structure; the preparation of geological and topographical maps of all parts of the country; the examination and assessment of natural resources; the study of problems of irrigation and water power; the classification of public lands; the investigation of natural disasters; the monitoring of global environment change, and the annual publication of papers, bulletins, and maps based upon surveys made. Gravity measurements over the Chicxulub crater
Three-dimensional Bouguer gravity anomaly map over the Chicxulub crater (North is up.). Compare with the regional Bouguer map also showing the shaded horizontal gradient. The crater is represented by the near-circular low central to the figure (with contained concentric structure). Notice that regional gravity anomalies interfere with the circular pattern (fan shape to the north and double low to the south) and that a gravity low expressed as a trough occurs to the east side. The origin of most of the regional anomalies is not yet known, but correlations to regional magnetic anomalies suggests that many are related to variations in the basement rocks of the peninsula. Note that this image is not showing the shape of the crater; the negative gravity anomaly of the crater corresponds to the relatively low densities of the rocks within the crater (breccias and the melt sheet) and the Tertiary sediments filling the crater. The double humped central gravity high corresponds to the central uplift buried deep within the crater. The Chicxulub crater has no central topographic feature - the central peak characteristic of smaller complex craters. Chicxulub is a peak-ring crater with a poorly known topographic ring occurring at 40 to 45 km radius from the crater's center. A few minutes after the impact the crater probably looked like a slightly larger version of the 165 km-diameter peak-ring crater

The glaciology groups' ice core program dates back to the 1970s. It will continue to provide information about the history of the above mentioned variables on time resolutions of seasonal to millennial and cover the last glacial/interglacial cycle from sites all over the Arctic and the Yukon. The ice core studies add a time dimension to the regional monitoring programmes also done by the group and place the modern trends in context. The multi-proxy, multi-variable approach of ice cores allows the cause and effect relationships to be established and provides, along with the records from tree rings and other climate sensitive stratigraphies, a way of reconstructing the history of the earth's climate in great detail over the last few thousand years. The ice core studies planned for Mt Logan, and surroundings will throw light on the importance of the Pacific Northwest and the contrast between the Eastern and Western Arctic. This Logan work is lead by the GSC but is only possible because of the cooperative approach in planning, financing and execution between universities and other government institutions (University of New Hampshire, University of Maine. Ottawa University, University of Copenhagen, DFO, University of Alaska, University of Alberta - Calgary AINA, UBC, NIPR - Japan, Science Centre Kluane, Parks Canada and others). The more people that are involved in the science and results, the better.

This information is essential for attracting exploration investment to the State and for effective landuse planning and decision making by all levels of government. The Geological Survey has been augmented by the Government's Exploration NSW initiative, which involves the allocation of $30 million over seven years (from 2000 to 2007) to fast track the provision of new geoscience data to promote petroleum and mineral exploration in the State.

Most of the salt used to keep roads free from ice in the winter will find its way to the groundwater in the area. Last winter, 260,000 tonnes of de-icing salt was used on the major roads in Sweden. In some areas where the salt will negatively affect the possibilities to use the groundwater for drinking water, further reductions in the use of de-icing salt may be necessary, but this is not something that SGU is advocating more generally.
