INTRODUCTION Geography is the study of the earth as the home of humanity. Geography provides a broad understanding of the processes that unite people, places and environments. Geographers explore the diverse regions of the contemporary world in pursuit of global understanding. They tie together the study of human spatial organizations and cultural landscapes with an in-depth investigation of the earth’s landforms, climates and vegetation. Their methods range from fieldwork in foreign areas to advanced information technologies like computerized geographic information systems. Geography graduates find rewarding careers in environmental analysis and planning, business, government agencies and education. International Learning Opportunities in Geography The Department of Geography is strongly committed to providing students with an international perspective. Geography 100 Global Geography offers a broad overview of the major countries and regions of the earth. Upper-division courses in Latin America (Geography 333), Europe (Geography 336), Asia (Geography 340) and Africa (Geography 344) offer an opportunity for in-depth study of specific regions. Finally, many other courses (Geography 120 Global Environmental Problems and Geography 360 Geography of the World’s Economics, for example), include a strong international emphasis. In recent years, members of the geography faculty have conducted fieldwork in Asia, South America and Europe.

Mulligan The course of study in geography is designed to provide a strong background in the discipline and a substantial foundation for a liberal arts education. A major in geography is good preparation for those interested in graduate work in geography, environmental and resource fields, urban planning and policy, or in careers in law, journalism, government, international affairs, business, and public service. The major in geography consists of a minimum of nine courses which must include:
    • two required human geogra phy courses (social science credit): GEOG 209, GEOG 220;
      any two from the physical geography courses (natural science credit);
      four other geography courses (includes CAPS 411 courses);

    Suggested Instructional Strategies

    Suggested Assessment Strategies

    Recommended Learning Resources
    PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES
    It is expected that students will:
    • identify the physical components of the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere
    • describe the major interactions among the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere
    • identify the social, economic, cultural, and political components of human systems
    • explain how physical and human systems interact within an ecosystem
    SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
    • Identify and explain components of each sphere by presenting examples from a variety of sources. In groups, ask students to research published inventories of the four spheres for specific locations. Have them identify and describe the components of each sphere represented in each location. Groups then present their findings to the class.
    • Divide the class into groups and assign one sphere to each group. Have groups walk around the school or community to identify characteristics of each sphere as they are represented in the local ecosystem. Ask groups to present their findings to the class. As a class, discuss and list any interactions among the spheres.
    • Challenge students to use information technology such as the Internet to access current information about interrelationships between human and physical systems. Students identify relevant web site addresses and record these in their portfolios.

Earth View gives you a beautiful view of the Earth from above, showing day and night, at your choice of time and date, and centering on any latitude and longitude. If you play with this a little, you can get a very good idea of the patterns of day and night over the Earth at different seasons. For more options, see the main page of this great web site: Earth and Moon Viewer Here Comes the Sun is a good tutorial about earth-sun relations and seasons, with clear diagrams and animations. Guide to Arctic Sunrise and Sunset lets you see where the sun is shining (or not) at three different locations in the Arctic for your chosen month. Good for visualizing how the seasons work at high latitudes. Also, you can get a calendar (printable) of sunrise and sunset times for many locations in the world at Custom Sunrise Sunset Calendar Here is a good page on How to Read the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Grid , from the U.S. National Park Service.

The strength of our department is reflected in our ability to attract top-caliber students, compete for significant research funding, and win major awards, including more Guggenheim Fellowships than any other geography department. Our faculty have been recognized both by the university and within our profession with such honors as UW named chairs , and AAG lifetime achievement awards Our Geography Program is divided into five major thematic areas : physical geography, environmental studies, human geography, area studies and global systems, as well as cartography and GIS. Degrees in Geography are offered at the B.A./B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels. In addition, students can earn a B.S. or M.S. in Cartography and GIS, or they can enroll in our very successful 1-year GIS Certificate Program.

    GLOSSARY ... ABOUT CHAPTER 4: Introduction to Systems Theory (e). Food Chain as an Example of a System A food chain models the movement of energy in an ecosystem (a form of environmental system). Figure 4e-1 below illustrates the movement of energy in a typical food chain. In this diagram, we begin the food chain with 100,000 units of light energy from the sun . Note, the amount of energy available at each successive level (called trophic levels ) of this system becomes progressively less. Only 10 units of energy are available at the last level ( carnivores ) of the food chain. A number of factors limit the assimilation of energy from one level to the next. We will examine these factors later in this textbook.
    The sun is the original source of energy, in the form of light, for the food chain.
