    Guide to Finding Lesson Plans
The Education and Social Science Library has many materials containing lesson plans, primarily in the form of curriculum guides, in both print and microfiche formats. According to the Facts on File Dictionary of Education , a curriculum guide differs from a lesson plan in that it includes "one or more aspects of curriculum and instruction, such as philosophy, policies, aims, objectives, subject matter, resources and processes" (p.138), while a lesson plan "includes the instructional objectives and methods for a particular functional unit or period of instruction" (p.271). Many lesson plans are embedded within the curriculum guides. The following is an explanation of several ways to locate lesson plans and other teaching materials on a particular topic in the Education and Social Science Library. Materials For this lesson, you will need: Access to additional reference materials about Chief Joseph Procedures Tell students that you are going to devote a class period to reading the piece of Native American literature included below and analyzing it in a class discussion. Begin by explaining that the piece you will read is from the 19th century but that, unlike so much Native American literature that began orally and later was written down, this piece originated as a written document. Go on to say that the piece was published in a magazine for a white audience in 1879, two years after the writer had surrendered to the U.S. government; that the piece was written by the Nez Perce leader Chief Joseph, whose father had been converted to Christianity by a missionary; and that the son was educated in a mission school.

Title Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson with illustrations by James Ransome (Alfred A. Knopf, New York, NY, 1993) Lesson Developed by Patricia King Robeson Literature Annotation : This story is based on a true, little-known chapter in African American history. As a seamstress in the Big House, Clara knows she's better off than the slaves who work the fields. But slavery has separated Clara from her mother, and she can never be happy without her. Clara dreams that they will be reunited one day and run away together - north to freedom. Then Clara hears two slaves talking about how they could find the Underground Railroad if only they had a map. In a flash of inspiration, she sees how to use the cloth in her scrap bag to sew a map of the land - a freedom quilt - that no master will ever suspect is a map to freedom. Grade Level Duration : 3 to 4 class periods; this lesson could be used to introduce other lessons or discussions on migration and the different reasons people have for moving.
