The USGS conducts science for a changing world. USGS Geography monitors the changes that occur on the land surface using remote sensing, studies the connections between people and those changes, and then provides individuals and society with information they can use to cope with the consequences of those changes. Land changes can be very gradual or sudden. They can be natural such as forest regrowth after a lightning-caused fire or a volcanic eruption. They can also be caused by human action such as converting forestland to residential land. Sometimes, the consequences of natural processes are magnified because of human action such as when debris flows that might have harmed a forest, now harm a neighborhood. Geography’s main challenges are:
  • To understand coupled human environmental systems in the face of land change
  • To deliver pertinent information on the vulnerability and resilience of these systems for decisionmaking
Geography is a bridging, integrating, and synthesizing science. We combine our talents with scientists in other disciplines to make a difference as we improve people’s ability to prosper as the land changes.

THE DIALECTICAL SOCIAL GEOGRAPHY OF ELISEE RECLUS
John P. Clark
(Illustration of Reclus by Cotard, pers. coll.) This is unfortunate, since his ideas are even more relevant today than they were in his own day, when he was widely known as the foremost geographer of France, and feared by many as a dangerous political radical. Indeed, a careful study of his thought shows him to be not only a pioneering figure in social geography, but also an ecological social theorist who long ago explored areas that have become central concerns of ecophilosophy and environmental ethics today. Perhaps most notably, Reclus is found to be an important precursor of social ecology, which is widely considered to be one of the three major tendencies in contemporary radical ecological theory. This essay will focus on one important aspect of his impressive body of thought: his holistic, dialectical interpretation of the place of humanity in the natural world. First, however, a brief discussion of Reclus' place in the political and intellectual life of his time may be helpful in putting his ideas in historical context. Thank You
April 1994 - July, 2005 The Ancient World Web is now closed. Thank you to the people who contributed links, fixes, updates, technology suggestions, and to those who used (and loved) the site over the past eleven years. I've appreciated it very much, and enjoyed getting to know you. I'd like to send a special shout-out to Dawn Kirkland - the first person to stumble across the list of bookmarks I put on my website for my own convenience, and the first person to suggest a link I hadn't seen before. Shuttering the Ancient World Web was a difficult and sad decision for me. As the demands of the site have increased with its age and size, I simply haven't been able to keep up. I've been ignoring all of my other web projects to try and catch up over the past few months, but I find myself behind again before I even finish the maintenance routine. (That routine includes: hand-verifying links (to track down sites that have turned to porn, or are no longer what they once were), fighting hackers and spam, digging through the suggested links (98% of which are inappropriate), rooting out fraud (people will try all sorts of things to improve their ratings or site hit counts), and trying to keep abreast of the latest news and information to figure out what new sites to add.) I now need to dedicate that time to finding a new job (my current contract is up in October, and I'm looking for interesting, challenging UI work), finishing some key projects, and the assorted minutiae of life.

Introduction The History Journals Guide is an international directory for journals and discussion lists in the fields of history and archaeology. History is understood in a broad sense as the study of the past including all periods, all regions and all fields. The History Journals Guide covers scientific and popular-scientific, current and ceased, frequently or irregularly appearing, and interdisciplinary periodicals and lists. The History Journals Guide is free accessible for all users worldwide. You do not have to register to use this directory. The History Journals Guide aims to be a starting point for researchers, graduates, students, librarians and other interested persons and intends to provide an easy access to up-to-date and historical information. At the moment not all periodicals and discussion lists are described completely. The guide is updated regularly. The History Journals Guide started as a student project at the University of Cologne. It went online in July 1997. At the beginning of 1998, the title changed from
