Ottawa, Ontario Canada, KlS 5B6 Geography at Carleton The many different careers that Carleton Geography graduates are pursuing lead us to recognize our responsibility to provide an educational experience which provides both breadth and depth. The many and varied opportunities - some quite unexpected to us - that our graduates have found to use their talents also demonstrate that it is not possible to identify any single career path that would constitute the normal experience for geography graduates. Our Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral programs are designed in response to this reality. The Bachelors programs provide sound FOUNDATIONS in various aspects of geography. The B.Sc. (Physical Geography) provides this foundation in the area of the earth surface environments, with study of climate, climatic change, earth materials, geomorphological processes, biogeography and biophysical resources. The Geographic Information Processing B.A. and B.Sc. provide sound foundations in the development and applications of remote sensing and geomatics. The B.A. programs provide the opportunities to pursue interrelated human geography topics and to choose integrated programs of study that address physical geography and the human-natural environment interface.

    http://webapps.cc.umanitoba.ca/calendar04/faculties/environment/geography/

    Faculty of Environment
Section 4: Bachelor of Arts in Geography 4.2 Program Information
Geography examines environments created on the earth's surface by nature and by humans. As such, it searches to explain how and why they differ from place to place. It is by emphasizing the spatial consideration that Geography provides its unique contribution to the Faculty of the Environment. There are four broad categories of courses in the discipline: Physical geography is concerned with physical features on and over the globe; human geography examines the products of human activity; regional geography attempts to achieve a synthesis of physical and human geography; and techniques in geography focus on analytic methods. Careers that can be pursued upon graduation from geography include a diverse array of possibilities, as the discipline has been described as ' the only subject that gives you carte blanche to look at the whole world and try to make sense of it. The General degree in Geography provides students with a basic level of understanding of the discipline and its inter-relationships. This degree is also a useful consideration for students planning to complete the After-Degree Bachelor of Education program (see Faculty of Education section of this Calendar). The Advanced degree program in Geography provides opportunities for students who desire a broad geographical education along with a reasonable degree of specialization in a particular field of Geography. Students planning a professional career or a high degree of specialization in Geography are strongly advised to enter the Honours degree program. The Honours degree demands the highest scholastic performance of all programs available. Students are strongly advised to enter an Honours degree program with their admission to the Bachelor of Arts (Geography). Consultation with an academic representative and/or the Acting Head is advised.

The concentration is appropriate for students simply curious about the world or those wishing the flexibility to pursue either a variety of careers or a graduate degree in geography, or, perhaps, wanting to join the Peace Corps. After completing the core courses, each student designs a coherent and focused program in studies in consultation with is/her advisor.
    Curriculum
GEOGRAPHY CORE COURSES: Physical Geography, Human Geography, Map Interpretation, World Geography (Europe and the Americas or Africa and Asia), and one 200-level regional course chosen by the student. REQUIRED GEOGRAPHY COURSES: a second 200-level regional course, 3 topical courses, and 1 geographic techniques course. OTHER REQUIRED COURSES: two additional 200-level or higher geography courses of the student's choice and three 200-level or higher courses from fields related to geography and the student's focus.
