General Tips For Applicants
Choosing graduate programs to apply to and attend can be a daunting task. Here are a few general tips that you might find helpful.
Deciding Where To Contact And Apply
1. Ask the faculty members you know now where they suggest you apply and who specifically you might work with.
2. Think about the recent research you have read and heard about. What do you find interesting? Contact the authors of those works and see if there is a possibility of working with them.
3. Study web pages and graduate information packages for the schools and faculty members you are interested in. Look carefully at their current research interests and what they have published lately. Does that work interest you? Are the faculty members still active in research and publication?
4. Look at the university, department and graduate program at places you are interested in. Is the university well known and does it have good reputation? Ask the same question about the department. However, remember there are some great graduate programs at smaller universities. Are there several faculty members there whose work interests you? Are most of the faculty active in research and publishing? Do you see graduates from the department listed as faculty members at other departments? Does the program focus on Ph.D. work? Is that what you want? Does it focus on applied training of M.A. or M.Sc. students? Does that suit your goals?

SDSS for Location Planning, or The Seat of the Pants is Out
by Larry Daniel
Manager of GIS Development
MPSI, Inc.
(Published in GeoInfo Systems December 1992) In the GeoInfo Systems May '92 issue, Donald Cooke described the general characteristics of a spatial decision support system (SDSS). This article reviews those concepts and extends the discussion by examining SDSS as it has historically applied to site analysis.
Reviewing SDSS
As described by Donald Cooke in the May '92 issue of GeoInfo Systems, a spatial decision support system (SDSS) is 'canned software that is intuitively obvious to use, solves problems efficiently and delivers immediate results'. SDSS is off-the-shelf software for carefully selected functions, i.e. bug-free point-and-shoot capabilities on very specific spatially-oriented needs. SDSSs don't require in-depth commands to operate, yet allow users to negotiate very sophisticated geographic analysis. Many of the distinctions between GIS and SDSS are derived from the differences in their target audiences. While GIS sites often employ technical analysts to plow through the nitty-gritty of setting up databases and defining complex functions, SDSS sites generally have but one or two business analysts who want to make spatial decisions but don't want to become immersed in the intricacies of GIS. The SDSS users don't seek a smorgasbord of commands, they want a select handful of intuitive operations to yield quick and effective answers. They want to avoid technically complex operations and while they're impressed by GIS' potential, what they really want is three or four buttons and an answer.

List of Interactive Maps GENERAL DESCRIPTION Russia's shores are washed by the waves of ten seas belonging to three oceans: the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Arctic Ocean. Though immense in territory, nearly 70% of Russia consists of broad plains and steppes. Russia also contains some 2 million fresh and saltwater lakes as well as many glaciers in its Arctic and high mountain regions. In western Russia, the East European Plain includes the low Valdai, Central Russian, and Volga Hills as well as the OkaDon and Caspian Lowlands. The north to south Ural Mountain Ranges, with an average elevation between 800 and 1,200 m (2,625 and 3,937 ft), mark the "official" eastern boundary of the East European Plain and the beginning of Asia. Beyond the Urals to the east lies the broad and flat West Siberian Plain, a vast expanse of marshy lowlands. This landscape gradually gives way to the strongly uplifted Central Siberian Plateau, an undulating countryside which combines high mountains and a complex chain of deep river valleys cut into the plateau's surface. Further east, the plateau blends into the Central Yakut Plain. There are about 120,000 rivers in the northern area of Siberia, most of which remain icebound for eight months of the year. Eastern and southern Russia are predominantly mountainous. South of the Caspian Depression and the Yergeni Hills, the Caucasus Mountains run northwest to southeast along Russia's border between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Russia's highest point, Mt. El'Brus at 5,642 metres (18,510 feet), lies in the Caucasus range. Many active volcanoes are also found along Russia's weat coast and throughout the Kuril Islands.

http://www.koreanhistoryproject.org/Jta/Kr/KrGEO0.htm
List of Interactive Maps GENERAL DESCRIPTION Situated within the cordilleran belt that stretches across the northern Pacific Rim, the entire peninsula rests on a granite foundation. Until about 245 million years ago most of the Korean Peninsula was little more than a weathered and eroded lowland at the eastern extent of the Asian continent. As geologic forces began twisting and tilting the land, the ground heaved skyward in the east to form a series of ragged mountain ranges. In the west and southwest, the landscape actually sank, leaving the western and southern landscape dominated by low, hilly terrain with gradual slopes, open plains, winding river basins, and jagged, irregular coastlines. Over time, many of the smaller mountains in this region disappeared beneath the waters of the Yellow Sea leaving the thousands of small islands that now grace Korea's south and west coasts. Most of the 3,479 islands that surround the peninsula are actually the tops of ancient ridges and mountains. . A number of smaller mountain ranges originating in the Nangnim and the T'aebaek ranges run parallel to each other in a generally northeast-to-southwest direction. These two mountain ranges have been a great barrier to communication between eastern and western Korea since early times. The terrain is a spectacular panorama of sculpted granite and rocky pinnacles that pierce the sky. Deep, narrow canyons with nearly vertical walls are common, carved by fast running streams with numerous waterfalls and rapids. Those streams that flow eastward from the T'aebaek Divide are short, straight and fast, cascading rapidly toward the ocean. Sand spits and sand bars enclose the coastal lagoons frequently found at the mouth of these streams, a situation that produced many fine harbors and broad, clean beaches. Korea's eastern sea coast, where the T'aebaek Sanmaek mountain range rises from the East Sea, is a nearly unbroken shoreline of precipitous cliffs and rocky outcroppings.
