We in the entire U.S. animal genome community owe Dr. Neal Jorgensen a big debt of thanks! Neal, more than anyone in the Experiment Stations, helped to develop and shape the National Animal Genome Program which led to the NRSP-8. During his tenure as the lead administrative advisor Neal has helped to organize scientists, plan the program, secure funding for all of the collaborative and cooperative efforts and to defend NRSP-8 from those that who have liked to eliminate it. Neal is retiring from the University of Wisconsin this year where he has been a valued faculty member and administrator for the past 29 years. A reception in his honor will be May 28 and as part of the retirement there will be a gift of a book of letters. Please consider sending Neal a letter of thanks for his efforts. The letters should be unfolded and sent to Ms. Jenny Hergenrother, College of Agric. and Life Sciences, 140 Ag Hall, 1450 Linden Drive, Madison, WI 53706 by no later than May 19. Thanks to some great ideas there will be additional resources to share in 1997.

Bacterial blight of rice, caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, is a serious disease prevalent throughout Asia. Some resistant cultivars were identified from 6184 Yunnan local varieties by using 10 bacterial blight strains from China, Philippines and Japan. Zha-Chang-Long (ZCL) a japonica variety was resistant to all bacterial blight stranis used (Chen et al. 1990). The resistance of ZCL to bacterial blight strain "Pxo61" is controlled by a dominant gene. This gene is non-allelic to Xa-I, Xa-2, Xa-3 and Xa-14 (Xie et al. 1990). We mapped this gene based on RFLP markers by using bulked segregant analysis (Michelmore et al.

    Research Interests
The researches in my laboratory involve gene expression, gene mapping and cloning, molecular phylogeny and biodiversity of plant species. Our goal is to identify the gene(s) controlling critical traits and their DNA sequences and then to classify variation in the germplasm pool by gene fingerprinting or by characterization of variation in key DNA sequences. To identify superior alleles based on DNA sequence, and incorporate direct allele selection into breeding program, allows more rapid and efficient improvement of germplasm and breeding lines. Identification of DNA markers tightly linked to the gene or genes controlling critical traits, and use them for the mapping based cloning and marker-assisted-selection. We also use efficient gene expression techniques to understand how gene(s) response to abiotic and biotic stress.

International Rice Blast Genome Project Statement of Intent
This statement is a formal announcement of our intention to obtain the full genome sequence of the fungus responsible for the most serious disease of cultivated rice- the blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea . An international consortium has been formed in order to carry out this ambitious task under the directorship of Dr. Ralph Dean, Director of the NC State Fungal Genomics Laboratory. The founders of the consortium include groups from the USA, UK, France, South Korea and Japan.
    1. Background There are a number of compelling reasons for obtaining the full genome sequence from Magnaporthe grisea which have acted as the impetus for this initiative. 1.1 Rice Blast Disease - A significant threat to global food supply
1.2 Rice Blast Disease - The economic problem
1.3 Rice Blast Disease - The scientific model
