These stand for adenine thymine cytosine guanine AT, TA, CG, and GC . The four possible combinations are sometimes called snips To switch metaphors from ladders to words, the four possible combinations of bases function as four "letters," and three letters at a time function as "words." This means we can have up to 64 different words. genes . The sum total of all our genes, all our genetic information, we call our genome . There are about 100,000 genes in the human genome.

General
Animal genetics Animal Genetics, published by Blackwell Science, publishes research on the immunogenetics, biochemical genetics and molecular genetics of economically important and domestic animals. Main research topics covered are genetic variation, blood groups, protein polymorphisms, molecular genetic markers, gene mapping, gene products and functions. Tables of contents are freely available, and the journal also has an online version offering free abstracts, with the full-text to subscribers only. Information is also given on subscriptions, instructions to authors, and media information. Periodicals [Publication Type] Genetics Animals, Domestic Cloning: past, present, and the exciting future "Cloning: Past, Present, and the Exciting Future" is one in a series of illustrated essays that makes up the "Breakthroughs in Bioscience" collection, developed by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Office of Public Affairs to educate the public about breakthroughs in biomedical research and their benefits to society. Written by Marie A. Di Berardino, Professor Emerita of Biochemistry, Pennsylvania-Hahnemann School of Medicine, this essay is based on the research knowledge used to clone "Dolly" the sheep, the first mammal successfully cloned from an adult cell. This essay discusses nuclear transfer, transgenic clones, totipotency, genetic reprogramming, and the direct and indirect advantages, as well as the perils of these cloning techniques. A bibliography of suggested reading is also available. Made available on the Web by FASEB.

Author details Abstract
  • GPs are involved in long term care of patients and families with complex conditions. They juggle the need for medical expertise, the relationships between family members, the cost of expertise, limitations of access, and the medicolegal environment. With this background, the GP is ideally placed to play an active role in the "new genetics". GP consultations involving the new genetics will include diagnostic testing for patients with clinical problems, preconception and prenatal testing for couples in relation to pregnancy, predictive testing for families with some genetic conditions, and community genetic screening in some circumstances. GPs will need to understand the language of the new genetics, undergo continuing education, and receive ongoing support to enable them to communicate effectively with patients and their families. Different models of care incorporating GPs, specialists and allied health professionals can be developed to provide maximum delivery of relevant genetic data for both genetic and common multifactorial disorders.

    Introduction from the Director
It is with pleasure that I welcome you to our Web site and introduce you to the Genetic Counseling Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Genetic counseling is an exciting profession that combines advanced education in human, molecular, and medical genetics with skills and experience in counseling. Genetic counselors are health professionals with specialized graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. Most enter the field from a variety of disciplines, including biology, genetics, nursing, psychology, public health, and social work. Genetic counselors work as members of a health care team, providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. They identify families at risk, investigate the problem present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence, and review available options with the family.

The slide presentation (Powerpoint) that elaborates on the problems will be available in the student room. Permission to present these slides has only been obtained for this setting, and in the interest of patient privacy, please do not disseminate any of the material. The presentation can be viewed linearly by clicking the “slide show” icon on the lower left hand border. Start on presentation “slide 01 Streamer Start”. At the end of each set, there is a hyperlink to the next set, there will often also be a slide set that allows for a hyperlink to more in depth presentations of the topic I have tried to focus on a number of visually alluring topics of importance by addressing syndromic and physical evaluation of congenital anomalies. I have focused on relatively common conditions, which will either be encountered in practice or be in the differential of an evaluation. In addition, I am asking students to introduce themselves to three excellent web-based databases:

What is genetics?
Genetics is a rapidly-growing area of science and medicine, with frequent newspaper headlines announcing the discovery of new genes, or knowledge about genetic diseases. Our Genetics Program is part of these exciting developments. We offer services in several areas: assessment, diagnosis, and counselling for patients; laboratory support for patients at our own and other centres; and participation in education and research.
The Genetics Program offers a wide variety of testing and counselling services for individuals and families with genetic concerns. Ours is one of the largest regional genetics centres in the province.
Genetic testing can:
  • detect genetic abnormalities in developing pregnancies.
  • indicate the likelihood of a patient developing an inherited condition such as Huntington disease or breast cancer later in life.
  • diagnose genetic diseases after symptoms begin to be experienced.
