This will impart some of the methods used to study population biology in the wild, and give practical experience of the joys of fieldwork. During the course, students undertake a small research project of their own. Practical issues The course is fun, but is not a holiday, and students have to work hard to keep up. Most of the lectures and practicals will take place in Spain during 10 days of the Easter Vacation. However, we give a small number (less than 5) introductory lectures before the end of the spring term in Block 4, and there is a requirement to attend the course symposium at the beginning of the summer term. The course is assessed in three ways, each contributing 1/3 of the marks. Essay, covering the background to one of the topics on the course. This will be handed in by the end of the spring term. Practical write-up . Students will write up the practical work done on the course, including discussion of the background, methods, results, and statistical analyses. The writeups are to be completed in Spain, and handed in on board the plane home.

Washington State University Home Suggested Schedule of Studies for Genetics and Cell Biology Genetics and cell biology are interdisciplinary sciences that are fundamental to all fields of modern biology. The program affords students the opportunity to study with scientists who represent a wide range of research interests in plant, animal, and microbial genetics and cell biology. Undergraduates who major in genetics and cell biology will be well prepared to work as high-level technicians in the biotechnology industry or in university and government laboratories. An undergraduate degree also prepares students for entry into professional schools related to medicine as well as into graduate school programs leading to the Master's and PhD degrees in a variety of areas in agriculture and basic science. Students who receive Master's and PhD degrees obtain positions in basic and applied genetics at universities, federal departments and laboratories, private industry, including biotechnology and plant and animal breeding, and in specialized medical research. At the graduate level, the school offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science in Genetics and Cell Biology and Doctor of Philosophy (Genetics and Cell Biology).

MDGEN 601 Selected Topics in Medical Genetics (*3)(Winter 2006)
    This course will be held from January 12, 2006 - April 12, 2006 on Thursdays 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics.
Our understanding of cancer as being an accumulation of mutations in key oncogenes and tumor suppressors is growing as the molecular pathways controlling growth regulation are being elucidated. Inherited cancer syndromes are useful in identifying pathways that are altered in sporadic cancers. Recently, an appreciation of the importance of the dysregulation of epigenetic events that alter chromatin structure in cancer development has been realized. This course will provide students with a current survey of key genetic and epigenetic pathways leading to tumorigenesis. Attendance at seminars from leading scientists in cancer biology will be an important part of the course.
Course coordinators for 2005/2006 will be Dr. Susan Andrew seandrew@ualberta.ca
