(CNN) Cures for serious illnesses may be found within the genetic codes of humans, and researchers say they are on their way to discovering them. Researchers have completed a draft of the master blueprint of what makes each human unique, and that information could help them create specific treatments for diseases. The announcement of that progress is the culmination of a decade of work to decode and analyze the genome, which is the collection of tens of thousands of genes in the human body. Researchers said that they have a massive database of those genes. Sayonara³ 03-20-2005, 05:28 AM Please post all such queries here, not in a new thread. Skye 03-20-2005, 04:31 PM I think there are some redundancies. The Genetics and Biochemistry/Genetic Engineering sections should be merged. Same for Neurology and Psychiatry/Psychology, though that is just because most neurology questions are about how a neurological condition leads to a psychological one (or vice versa).
Biomedical Ethics could be broadened to include ethical aspects of science in general. SUSTAINER PROGRAM FEEDBACK CUSTOMIZE November 26, 2002 Not-So-Little White Lies: Education and the Myth of Black Anti-Intellectualism By Tim Wise Cherished myths die hard, especially when those myths serve the interests of the more powerful members of a society at the expense of the less powerful. For generations, slaveowners ignored their chattels’ humanity, to say nothing of their desire for freedom, even coming up with a name for the presumed mental illness that “explained” the urge on the part of their property to run away. Drapetomania, it was called: a powerful disorder that afflicted the brains of slaves, rendering them incapable of recognizing how good they had it. The subordination of persons of color has regularly been rationalized with absurd racist stereotypes, even when evidence flatly contradicted the illogic of those assumptions. So, for example, segregation was needed to allow blacks to develop to the “limit of their capacities,” and to hear some tell it, blacks actually preferred separate schools, housing, water fountains, and lunch counters. Japanese Americans had to be interned for “national security” purposes because they were disloyal to America. Filipinos were incapable of self-government; Hawaiians were heathens in need of Christian discipline, and so on and so forth. It mattered little, of course, that persons of color were actually quite loyal to the U.S. (indeed, more so than probably justified); or that non-white nations had long exercised self-government before being “discovered” by Europeans. And the myths would linger even after social movements forced changes in the society that had nurtured them. Although the more extreme versions of these beliefs are less often heard than in years past, newer variations are common: so instead of claims that blacks are a separate species or genetically inferior (which of course are still articulated, as with best-selling books like The Bell Curve), new and more palatable claims of cultural inferiority have come to predominate.

In one Valley mom's case, it's a constant waiting game because the symptoms her 4-year-old daughter faces could turn deadly. Costello Syndrome For more information, visit www.costellokids.org.uk or contact Andy Hendrickson or Michelle Lucero with the Costello Support Group at the Spring of Life Church by calling (480) 218-1456. While Priscilla Lucero may act normal, just before her second birthday doctors diagnosed her with Costello Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects multiple organ systems of the body. "She probably wouldn't walk until she was 3 or 4 years old," said Michelle Lucero, Priscilla's mom. "She probably wouldn't eat solid foods until she is as old as 7." The syndrome not only delays a child from developing at a normal pace, it can also trigger some forms of heart disease, certain cancers and seizures.

Photograph by Jenny Kubo New Project Traces Humans' Ancient Wanderings By Catherine Clarke Fox National Geographic Kids News June 14, 2005 Most of us know who our close relatives are—parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. But every one of us may also be related to a man who lived in Africa about 60,000 years ago, according to recent studies. Most scientists agree that the first humans lived in Africa. What routes did humans take as they moved out of Africa to the other places people live today? To find out, the National Geographic Society joined with IBM, a computer company, to launch the Genographic Project. This African group is taking part in the Genographic Project.

Astronomers hot on the trail of nature's exotic flashers (May 31 2005 23:29 GMT)
- Astronomers have uncovered tantalizing insights into the origin of short gamma-ray bursts - mysterious, split-second high-energy flashes that have eluded detailed study until now. Unlike their long-duration cousins, which are known to arise when massive young stars die, short bursts are thought to occur when old, dense neutron stars collide.

Is GENETICS (Bi0047) for You?
What does Genetics cover? Genetics is a basic lower division course covering key material for those interested in nearly all areas of modern biology and medicine.  This course covers genes, mutations, DNA, RNA, proteins, protein function, biochemical and regulatory pathways, and the interactions among these elements in organismal development and function, disease, and the diversity of life.
What kind of students take Genetics? All students who have passed the AP Biology exam with a 4 or 5, or Introductory Biology (Bi0020), especially those who are interested in a Biology concentration such as Human Biology, Biology, Biochemistry, or Medicine, are strongly encouraged to take Genetics.  Genetics and Biochemistry (Bi0028) form a solid academic foundation on which to succeed in any biology or medicine oriented curriculum. This course is also appropriate for other concentrators interested in a knowledge of modern biology, especially as many biological issues are also societal issues and knowledge of the underlying principles is essential for making informed decisions on these issues.
Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors all took Genetics last year, with all groups showing similar success.  There are important academic reasons to take Genetics by the sophomore or junior year, but seniors should not miss this chance to fill the gap in their biology backgrounds.  Genetics covers material that is required by or highly useful in many of the upper division courses that build the higher level knowledge top students will want to gain while at Brown.  These courses include particularly Bi0131 Developmental Biology, Bi0105 Advanced Cell Biology, and Bi0154 Molecular Genetics, but also include any course using genetic, molecular or molecular genetic approaches to biological problems.
