A Report on Genetically Engineered Crops

This report is about two closely related subjects. One subject is the considerations for and against genetic engineering of our food. This part of the report will quickly reveal my personal bias in favor of engineering, but I have tried to fairly represent the problems as well as the benefits. The other topic is more important. Genetic engineering gets to the very core of how life works and people are inclined to have very strong feelings about it. Because the public knows so very little about science, some opponents of transgenic agriculture have been able to spread misinformation and manipulate public opinion. As Donna Shalala told a group of scientists, speaking about genetic engineering, ``My concern is if we don't have a broadly educated public ... that charlatans out there will be able to play on public fears.'' Exactly that has happened. Almost everything the general public has been told about genetic engineering of food has originated in the deceptive presentations by skilled propagandists.

Genetic engineering is the alteration of genetic code by artificial means, and is therefore different from traditional selective breeding. Genetic engineering examples include taking the gene that programs poison in the tail of a scorpion, and combining it with a cabbage. These genetically modified cabbages kill caterpillers because they have learned to grow scorpion poison (insecticide) in their sap. Genetic engineering also includes insertion of human genes into sheep so that they secrete alpha-1 antitrypsin in their milk - a useful substance in treating some cases of lung disease. Genetic engineering has created a chicken with four legs and no wings.

During the latter stage stages of the 20th century, man harnessed the power of the atom, and not long after, soon realised the power of genes. Genetic engineering is going to become a very mainstream part of our lives sooner or later, because there are so many possibilities advantages (and disadvantages) involved. Here are just some of the advantages :
  • Disease could be prevented by detecting people/plants/animals that are genetically prone to certain hereditary diseases, and preparing for the inevitable. Also, infectious diseases can be treated by implanting genes that code for antiviral proteins specific to each antigen. Animals and plants can be 'tailor made' to show desirable characteristics. Genes could also be manipulated in trees for example, to absorb more CO and reduce the threat of global warming. Genetic Engineering could increase genetic diversity, and produce more variant alleles which could also be crossed over and implanted into other species. It is possible to alter the genetics of wheat plants to grow insulin for example.
Of course there are two sides to the coin, here are some possible eventualities and disadvantages.

The universal principle of molecular recognition. This should be very familiar to you by now, so it may turn up on exams. Every cell contains membrane-bound molecules exposed to the environment which communicate with it. These molecules act as the "eyes, ears and nose" of a cell. That is, they "see", or "smell" what other molecules are out there like a hunting dog winds its prey. They contain, as part of each molecule, specific regions on each molecule called RECEPTORS or BINDING SITES . Molecules in the environment contain specific components called LIGANDS that have the characteristic of binding or attaching (docking with) specifically at unique sites on the cell's receptor molecules. Following this attachment a number of different responses may occur. In some cases a message is passed to the interior of each cell as to the situation it has found, while in others the attached molecule may be transported into the cell. In the former case this information, in turn, triggers the cell to carry out a series of preprogrammed responses based on the data it has received; this is analogous to the Mars rover receiving commands from earth. Fast Forwarding To Future Foods
by John Henkel Take a peek into the supermarket of the near future. At first glance, products on display won't seem much different from those you are used to. Cucumbers. Peppers. Corn. They'll still be there. But amid all the produce and other kitchen staples, you're apt to find new versions of familiar foodsones that are custom "built" to improve quality or remove unwanted traits. Insect-resistant apples, long-lasting raspberries, and potatoes that absorb less fat are among the more than 50 plant products under study now that are likely to reside soon on grocers' shelves. These commodities will arrive courtesy of genetic engineering, a process that allows plant breeders to modify the genetic makeup of a plant species precisely and predictably, creating improved varieties faster and easier than can be done using more traditional plant-breeding techniques. Genetic engineering already is improving lives in areas such as disease diagnostics and treatments, but at the moment it is a fledgling economic force in the commercial food business. Though genetic engineering promises better and more plentiful products, genetically engineered foods may encounter a few obstacles to widespread public acceptance. Some consumers, along with a few advocacy groups, have voiced concern about the safety and environmental impact of these new food products. Some urge an outright ban on any genetically engineered foods. Others support mandatory labeling that discloses the use of genetic engineering. Still others advocate more stringent testing of these products before marketing.

Genetic Engineering: The Future of Foods?
By Linda Bren Hawaiian farmers were in trouble. In the mid-1990s, an insect-borne virusthe papaya ring spot virus (PRSV)threatened to decimate Hawaii's second-largest fruit crop. Plant breeders scrambled to produce a virus-resistant papaya. When traditional plant breeding methods failed, researchers turned to genetic engineering. Years of research were finally met with success, and by spring of 1998, Hawaiian farmers were planting the seeds of PRSV-resistant papaya. "The results were dramatic," says Dennis Gonsalves, Ph.D., a Cornell University plant pathologist who led the researchers' efforts to save the tropical delicacy and the livelihood of Hawaii's growers. "It was not a matter of increasing the yield, but a matter of whether they could grow it or not grow it." Gonsalves' team of researchers from academia, industry, and government had isolated and copied a virus gene, then used a device called a gene gun to "shoot" the gene into the cells of the papaya plant. The virus gene in the plant works somewhat like immunization, but the mechanism of resistance is different, says Gonsalves, now director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center in Hilo, Hawaii. "By integrating this virus gene into the chromosomes of the papaya, this made the papaya and subsequent generations resistant to the virus."
