    Keratosis Pilaris Community
Hi! and welcome to KeratosisPilaris.org. This site is presented as a public service for the benefit of the keratosis pilaris affected community. Keratosis Pilaris is a very common genetic follicular disease manifested by the appearance of rough bumps on the skin. Primarily, it appears on the back and outer sides of the upper arms, but can also occur on thighs and buttocks or any body part except palms or soles. There are several different types of keratosis pilaris, including keratosis pilaris rubra (red, inflamed bumps), alba (rough, bumpy skin with no irritation), rubra faceii (reddish rash on the cheeks) and related disorders. As a keratosis pilaris sufferer , I know that finding other Keratosis Pilaris "people", and finding relevant information about keratosis pilaris on the net, isn't easy. This site strives to improve the keratosis pilaris community's resources, raise awareness and support, and provide an easy-access meeting place for all of us!

Dr. Padgett is a veterinary pathologist at Michigan State University with special interest in canine genetics and what role breed clubs play in the control of the genetic diseases in their particular breed. He cites the need for open record keeping which will report all evaluations (abnormal as well as normal) as being essential to health improvement in a colony of dogs or a breed as a whole. Dr. Padgett was one of the founders of the GDC which is this kind of registry.
Responsibilities of a breeder:
  • Should have established breeding goals for their line, defined by their ideal dog so they know what they are breeding for and can select an appropriate test mate.

    Genetic Syndromes
What causes genetic disorders? Each cell in the human body contains 23 pairs of chromosomes . You inherit one set of the pair from your father and one set from your mother.  Each chromosome is made up of many genes , about 2,000 in each chromosome, for a total of 50,000 genes in each cell.  These genes make all the proteins in the body, which promote development and growth, and carry out all body functions. When one or more of these genes or chromosomes are missing or mutated , or if extra chromosomes are present, the proteins may not get made, may be made incorrectly, or too many may be made.  Any of these situations can cause abnormal development and growth and can result in a genetic syndrome .  Sometimes these abnormal genes or chromosomes are passed down from a parent, and sometimes they occur spontaneously without reason. For help in understanding the terms used in genetics, see the
