IFST: Useful Food-Related Mailing Lists and Newsgroups
    Mailing Lists
An internet mailing list is maintained on a "listserver" computer, and you join it (which costs nothing) by sending a "subscribe" message plus the name of the list and your first and last names, by e-mail to the listserver address . Inclusion of the name of the list is important as some listservers run a number of different lists. The hyphens in some of the names are important, so be careful to include them correctly. Any subscriber can "post" a message, article, report, announcement, etc or a response to someone else's previous posting, by sending it by e-mail to the list address (N.B. not the same as the listserver address). Every posting will go automatically by e-mail to every subscriber. You remain a subscriber until such time as you send an "unsubscribe" message to the listserver address. It is very important to understand that "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" commands must not go to the list address (or they would go to, and annoy, all other subscribers, who anyway cannot fulfil the command). Likewise list postings must not be sent to the listserver address, where they would just be automatically discarded by the listserver computer. The internet is international, but the character of the material posted on mailing lists open to the public is dependent on the subscribers and the volume of "traffic" that they create. For historical reasons, it will be found that, in some of them (particularly those based in US universities, indicated by .edu at the end of the addresses) the traffic is still predominantly US-related; but widening the character depends on subscribers from all countries becoming involved, and this has been increasingly happening in recent years.

    WHAT IS JGAP?
JGAP (pronounced "jay-gap") is a genetic algorithms component written in the form of a Java package. It provides basic genetic mechanisms that can be easily used to apply evolutionary principles to problem solutions. The ground is laid for introducing Genetic Programming to JGAP in the near future!
JGAP has been written to be very easy to use "out of the box," while also designed to be highly modular so that more adventurous users can easily plug-in custom genetic operators and other sub-components.
    WHAT ARE GENETIC ALGORITHMS?
Genetic algorithms (GAs) are evolutionary algorithms that use the principle of natural selection to evolve a set of solutions toward an optimum solution. GAs are not only very powerful, but are also very easy to use as most of the work can be encapsulated into a single component, requiring users only to define a fitness function that is used to determine how "good" a particular solution is relative to other solutions.

The Canidae Genetics Tests Health ... Linking Policy T he Canine Diversity Project is an attempt to acquaint breeders of domesticated Canidae (dogs) with the dangers of inbreeding and the overuse of popular sires . Both lead to the indiscriminate loss of genetic diversity and increase the frequency of genetic problems in the population. These abuses have not been restricted to dogs, but have also occurred in horses, cattle and many other domestic animals, largely as a consequence of outdated beliefs dating back to the early days of genetics. Even their wild cousins have been the unfortunate victims of genetic malpractice by zoos. Fortunately, zoo biologists have recognized the dangers to these and many other species, and Species Survival Plans have been developed for many. Though, as a species, Canis familiaris is not endangered, a number of breeds are in as much danger of extinction as some of their wild cousins . If different varieties of wolves are worthy of preservation, are not the different breeds of domestic dogs equally worthy? Starting with wolves, and perhaps other related canids, man shaped the dog to his own ends. For several thousand years they have been our companions, helpers and guardians. A dog, treated with a little kindness, will be your friend for life. How do we reward them? By condemning many to a life of pain or an early death due to various

This is an unmoderated list open to researchers, physicians, patients, family, and friends of patients, for the discussion of any issue relating to breast cancer. While some of the list will be devoted to discussions of medical advances, as well as possible therapeutic treatments, both mainstream and alternative, the list should also have a less rigorous side to it. The list does not recommend particular therapies, but seeks to increase the information available on options and choices. It will also be a forum for breast cancer patients and their loved ones to vent frustrations and offer alternative strategies in dealing with the patriarchical medical-industrial complex, and to offer help and insights into the psychosocial management of the disease.

It also provides educational support services to teachers, has a large publishing programme and designs touring exhibitions aimed at bringing achievements in the chemical sciences into the public domain. The web site provides information on all of these services as well as allowing access to the library's catalogue. DM2 is know as Type 2 also known as PROMM or " Proximal Myotonic Myopathia " DM1 is caused by an expanded repeat of CTG on Chromosome 19
DM2 is caused by an expanded quadruplet repeat of CTG on Chromosome 3 Differences in DM1 and DM2 DM2 does not seem to cause the severe congenital form when the mother that has the disease has an infant. Also the apathetic personality traits with DM1 do not seem to be associated with DM2. People with DM2 will have more weakness in the trunk of the body (proximal) versus DM1 will have more weakness in the distal parts of the body like legs and arms. The incidence of DM2 is unknown. There is a genetic test for DM2 just available from Athena Diagnostics. Estimation is that the incidence is less than 2% (QUEST Feb 2002) but it may be much higher. A deficient gene causes DM This is an alteration in the myotonin protein kinase gene, specifically in the APOC2 locus located on the proximal long arm of chromosome 19.

The cryonics mailing list (CryoNet) is a forum for topics related to cryonics, which include technical reports of cryopreservations, low temperature biology, mechanisms of freezing injury and progress in avoiding it, legal status of cryonics and cryopreserved people, new research and publications, conferences, mass media coverage of cryonics, local cryonics group meetings, and even the philosophical issues that cryonics raises. USENET has a sci.cryonics news group intended strictly for the scientific/technical aspects of cryonics and some cross-posting is done between sci.cryonics and the cryonics mailing list. The mailing list also includes internal cryonics organization related messages, though, which generally do not go to sci.cryonics.
