INTRODUCTION / BACKGROUND
Genetic testing informs individuals about aspects of their genetic makeup that may indicate they are at risk for particular diseases. This case introduces students to genetic testing and illustrates its advantages and disadvantages in the context of a person at risk for breast cancer. The case scenario presents a dilemma about genetic testing requiring a decision about whether or not to get tested for known mutations in the breast cancer genes. As scientists discover information about genetics, those who use the information need to analyze related issues. This case is appropriate for students in fields associated with genetics. The case is also well suited for students interested in bioinformatics, a new field of study that combines biology and information technology. Bioinformatics is used to analyze large databases of information, such as those resulting from the Human Genome Project. In addition, the case is appropriate for science or pre-med students studying biology or disease prevention, and for students studying ethical decision-making. A valuable aspect of this case is its illustration of how to make decisions: how to analyze aspects of a decision and how to debate their relative merit. In this context, the case is appropriate for all students.

In this 5-10 period web quest teaching unit, senior high students need to invent a genetically engineered product and then write a report answering a series of questions about their hypothetical new product (e.g., how they did it, how it impacts on the plant/animal's habitat and life systems, how it affects the environment, etc. ). Starting points for their web research are provided and a teacher's guide is included.

    Chapter: Sample Project
Chapter One: The Molecules that Make up a Cell
This chapter is designed to introduce students to what molecules are used to make up a cell, where different structures are located and how cells grow and divide. A. The main concepts are:
  • Cells are made up of very few types of molecules. The type of molecule used for a specific structure takes into account the properties of the molecule and the functions it will perform when it is part of the cell. For example, lipids are well suited to form cell membranes because they self-associate to form a stable barrier between inside the cell and outside the cell. The fluidity can be changed simply by changing the location and number of cis and trans bonds in the fatty acids. The different locations in a cell indicate that spatial relationships must be taken into account in cell processes. Where a molecule resides is very important. Different compartments have different properties, functions and resident molecules. Cell growth and division indicates that temporal constraints can apply to specific processes. Not only must certain molecules/structures be present, they must be present in the right place at the right time.

    Meet Siobhan Doss
This Austin native planned on becoming a veterinarian. Luckily for future generations of veterinarians, though, Doss immediately signed up for the UTeach program at the College of Natural Sciences. The program gives undergraduates the opportunity to see what teaching is like while pursuing traditional science degrees. Doss taught a science lesson at a local elementary school her first semester, and says she was immediately hooked. A mathematics major, she became a UTeach intern at the Texas Memorial Museum in the fall of 2001. She helped develop curriculum guidelines based on museum exhibits that grade school and high school teachers could use before and after a museum visit to enhance student learning. One guide focused on a dinosaur fossil exhibit; another, on quilts. For the quilt guideline, Doss demonstrated how different-shaped panels could be sewn together to form a quilt. "It was nice because I could incorporate some of my math knowledge, my knowledge of geometry, into the activities," she says. Doss' favorite teaching-related experience came as a camp counselor last year for the museum's summer camp. She taught up to five hours a day during Texplorers!, using some activities she had developed earlier. Plus there were field trips to a city park to look for fossils and other fun activities, such as a lesson in which the children dropped marbles on a pile of colored powder to learn how a meteor might burst. "The hands-on approach is a much better experience than telling students what happens out of a book," says Doss, who intends to teach sixth- or seventh-grade math.

Stem cell research is on of the fastest developing areas of medical research and perhaps one of the most controversial. A stem cell is a cell that has the ability to divide [self replicate] for indefinite periods. Under the right conditions, or given the right signals, stem cells can give rise [differentiate] to the many different cell types that make up the organism. That is, stem cells have the potential to develop into mature cells that have characteristic shapes and specialized functions, such as heart cells, skin cells, or nerve cells.
Also called progenitor cells, there are several kinds of stem cells. Serving as a sort of repair system for the body, stem cells can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.
'The Stem Cell Game' presents a basic A to Z of stem cells, reviewing where they are found in the body, the different types, how they are cultured and examples of stem cell therapy that rely on replacing diseased or dysfunctional cells with healthy, functioning ones. The facts are presented in the form of a board game, designed as a non-formal teaching aid to reinforce the syllabus. The game consists of a board and two sets of question cards in downloadable form.

In order to understand the mechanisms by which viruses take advantage of and subvert the host biosynthetic machinery, you need a good understanding of some basic biochemical, genetic and molecular biological principles. Given the prerequisites for this course, you should have a firm grasp of the definitions/concepts underlying the following list of common scientific terms. If you can not describe most of these terms, then you will have alot of difficulty with the factual and conceptual material in this course: DNA, mRNA, amino acid, protein, nucleotide, promoter, 5', 3', transcription, semiconservative DNA replication, translation, codon, reading frame, splicing, recombination, plasma membrane, endocytosis, endoplasmic reticulum, lipid bilayer, hydrophobic.
