MGH researchers first to identify genetic malfunction in type 1 diabetes Focus on autoimmune reaction may lead to new preventive or therapeutic approaches November 24, 1999 — A research study from the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has identified a gene malfunction that appears to be central to the development of type 1 diabetes. The study in a classic animal model of type 1 diabetes found that a gene required to help teach the immune system to recognize so-called "self" proteins is somehow inactivated, even though its sequence is not mutated. The scientists also found that the inactivation of this gene called has a profound impact on another key protein called nuclear factor kappa-B (NF- k B), a major controller of several immune system activities. Finding ways to correct or circumvent the malfunction identified in this study may lead to ways of preventing or stopping the autoimmune reaction at the heart of type 1 diabetes. J. Piaget's Genetic Epistemology And the Teaching of Elementary Mathematics As Analyzed by Brett W. Baskovich Abstract: Generally, science is the analysis and understanding of the way certain events occur and can be controlled. Epistemology examines our ability to make these analyses, deducing the nature, limits and flaws of human reasoning. The science of genetic epistemology studies the advancement of this ability throughout a person's life, for our knowledge and reasoning abilities are dynamic, and when their workings are properly understood, they are more easily improved. I. Introduction It is common knowledge that intelligence increases with age. Additional experiences and extended cognitive development lead to more sophisticated and accurate analyses of the world [6]. But the mechanics and extent of this change are not common knowledge. And before the studies of Jean Piaget (1896-1980), they were hardly even considered. Of course, this development occurs whatever the environment of a person, but the speed and extent of development can be maximized through application of these studies [4]. In his books, Piaget defines several stages through which a child passes, each new stage representing an improvement in reasoning. He provides examples of experiments and questions applied to different age groups that clearly display the changes, and describes the implications. Literature and new teaching methods have resulted from his works. What follows shall be a brief and general description of the stages important to psychological and mathematical development and some of the consequences of this knowledge.

Teacher Resource Page Activities Home of the Free and the Wild Mustangs represent the spirit of the Old West. Wild and free, they evoke images of vast rolling prairies, untamed hills and mountains, and hidden canyons. Though the ancestors of horses once roamed across North America, they died out on this continent thousands of years ago. The horse returned to the Americas with the invasion of Spanish explorers in the 16th century. Some of those animals escaped from, or were freed by, their masters, reproduced in the wild, and became the foundation for the herds of mustangs that still roam the American West today. Over the centuries, more horses have joined these wild bands. One of the enduring romances of the Old West is the tale of the spiritual bond between mythic heroes and the wild horses they tamed. At the turn of the century, there were possibly as many as 2 million wild horses. But the Old West is no more. Roads, cities, ranches, farms, people and progress have covered much of the mustang's range, and the remaining horses are scattered throughout publicly-owned lands, or on a few private preserves in the West. The transition has been cruel and bloody. Earlier in this century, wild horses were hunted down and shipped to slaughterhouses. With the government's blessing, mustangers used means fair and foul to destroy these icons of the past.

Post-Graduate Research Research The major areas of on-going research in the Unit include Optical Character Recognition, Natural Language Processing, Pattern Recognition, Image Processing and Soft Computing tools. The CVPR unit is proud of a pioneering development of an Optical Character Recognition OCR ) system for the combined script recognition of Bangla and Devnagari (Hindi), the most popular scripts of the Indian sub-continent. The system performs document tilt correction, script line, word and character segmentation, character recognition and finally, error correction. Its performance has been found to be about 98%. Work on Oriya OCR and OCR for Bangla hand-written character recognition is in progress. A major area of interest of this unit is the general problem of digital document analysis. Novel algorithms for skew estimation and correction have been developed. A system for the automatic detection and processing of mathematical expressions from documents is being designed. The issues of automatic layout analysis of both printed and handwritten documents involving segmentation, information and feature extraction, data compression, processing and understanding line drawings are under study while a system for the automatic extraction of meta-information from document images has already been developed. A Bangla programming interface to the Turbo-C compiler has been implemented which has been found to work well for programs of moderate complexity. Another work in progress is language data compression, both from hypertext and images of documents in Indian scripts.

Genetics Classroom Activities Genetics abounds with complex and abstract topics that can be a challenge for students to grasp. How can some of these difficult topics be taught in the classroom? The 1998 GEP retreats provided a forum for teachers to share their genetics teaching expertise in the form of Genetics Teaching Vignettes and shorter Cool Tools. Teachers participating in professional development workshops sponsored by our sister program, The GENETICS Project , also contribute their tools to the collection presented here. Genetics Teaching Vignettes Three teachers from the elementary, middle school, and high school levels presented extended vignettes of how they teach genetics in their classrooms in an age-specific way. These vignettes range from using sickle cell anemia as a case study at the high school level, to an extended population genetics exercise involving "toothpick fish" at the middle school level, to a demonstration of how basic genetics concepts can be integrated into the set curriculum that is part of the science kits approach that many elementary schools in Washington State have adopted. Cool Tools Cool tools include the visual and kinesthetic models and activities that teachers use to demonstrate genetics concepts in their classrooms. Sometimes a great article may be a cool tool. Or a zipper that demonstrates DNA base-pairing. Or an everyday analogy that can make an abstract concept crystal clear. Or a simple hands-on activity.
