The Centre, in collaboration with the (EBU), co-ordinates and teaches three subjects in the postgraduate degree courses of Master of Public Health , Graduate Diploma in Epidemiology and Biostatistics , and Master of Epidemiology Genetic Epidemiology provides an introduction to epidemiological methods, which are used to estimate the contributions of environmental and genetic factors in disease aetiology, and to help identify genes associated with a disease. Concepts, methodologies, and interpretation of familial risk factors for chronic diseases are the major topics of this subject. Molecular Epidemiology provides an introduction to molecular techniques used in population-based studies, the collection and storage of biological specimens, and the use of biomarkers including measurement issues and statistical analysis of data. Database Systems in Epidemiological Studies provides training in relational database design, programming, security, systematic collection and recording of epidemiological data, and exporting data from databases for statistical analysis. These issues are critical for the conduct of large population-based epidemiological studies that may include both biological and epidemiological data.

Implementing the Module (continued)
Activity 2, The Meaning of Genetic Variation , serves in a broad sense as the Explore phase of the model. In this activity, students ask and answer questions about the ways in which human variation might be significant, and then use resources on the Web site to explore its significance as the basis for evolution by natural selection. Molecular Medicine Comes of Age , Activity 3, moves students into the Explain phase of the model. During this phase, students look more closely at the molecular basis for human genetic variation and develop a more detailed set of explanations for the concepts they have been exploring. Explain activities give students opportunities to articulate their developing conceptual understanding or to demonstrate particular skills or behaviors. Typically, this is where the teacher introduces relevant terms and definitions, and where students might do some assigned reading about defined topics. Keep in mind, however, that Explain activities still are student -centered. In Activity 3, the students develop their own explanations for how studying human genetic variation at a molecular level is changing the practice of medicine. Here, the teacher’s role is to guide students so that they have ample opportunity to develop a more complete understanding of this phenomenon.

Contents of Curriculum Unit 96.05.01:
To Guide Entry
The objectives of this unit are to take basic concepts of genetics and apply them to an organism, easily raised and observed in the classroom. It has been a challenge in the teaching of High School Biology, to take the abstract ideas of genes, chromosomes, heredity, and make them visable and tangible for the students. Drosophila melanogaster offers a way for teachers to help students make connections between populations, the organism, the cell, the chromosome, the gene, and the DNA. As a part of a unit on genetics, this unit on Drosophila can give students the opportunity to get to know an organism well, observing closely its development and physical characteristics, and then questioning how it is that the fly came to be this way.
Unit Format:
I. Discussion of Drosophila
1. Review of genetics concepts
2. Thomas Hunt Morgan and the historical frame
3. Drosophila chromosomes, characteristics, and developmental stages

Teaching About Inherited Human Disorders Through Case Studies

1994 Woodrow Wilson Biology Institute This sequence of activities uses a case study method of teaching about inherited human disorders. The goal is to help students understand the genetic basis of various disorders and to participate in the complexities of choosing among the alternatives. The students will use a case study to initiate their investigation into the nature of genes and how altered genes cause changes in cell processes. They will begin to understand how changed cell processes produce overall symptoms in the human organism. Then, the students will find out about the treatments and various alternatives available to individuals and families affected by genetic disorders. Finally, students will make lists of benefits and negatives for each of the choices, including a whole range of issues from the effectiveness of the treatments to family values. Ultimately, students will make their informed decisions. The following activities follow a logical sequence and may be used that way; however each activity may also be used separately. Inherent in each of these activities is a decision model that is presented in diagram form on the next page and referred to in each of the activities.

Seven members of the HELIX project, four in Lyon and three in Grenoble, are professors or assistant professors at, respectively, the Université Claude Bernard in Lyon (UCBL) and the Université Joseph Fourier and the Université Pierre Mendès-France in Grenoble. They therefore have a full teaching load of at least 192 hours. Over the years various members of the project have developed courses in biometry, bioinformatics and evolutionary biology at all levels at universities as well as at the ``École Normale Supérieure'' (ENS) of Lyon and the ``Institut National de Sciences Appliquées'' (INSA) in Lyon. One strong motivation of these teaching activities is the need to provide training to biologists having a good background in mathematics and computer science. The group has thus participated in the creation (in 2000) at the INSA of a new module at the Department of Biochemistry called `Bioinformatics and Modelling'. This module is open for students entering the third year of the INSA, and covers 1700 hours of courses over 5 semesters. The project also contributes bioinformatics courses at the level of a ``Magistère'' at the ENS. As part of the LMD system that is currently being set up at all universities in France, members of the project have created a complete interdisciplinary module in Lyon offering training in biology, mathematics and computer science. The module is called ``Approches Mathématique et Informatique du Vivant'' (AMIV), and leads to Master degrees in the scientific and medical fields.
