Art History
209 Art Art history is the study of the creation, style, and meaning of works of art in relation to the artists and societies that created them. The history of art involves the interaction of styles, techniques, concepts, individual personalities, and social values from many places over long periods of time. This discipline is comparative in nature and requires many different skills, derived from the study of history and culture, foreign languages and literature, iconography, stylistic analysis, and connoisseurship.

J.Bauman The discipline of Art History encompasses the study of artistic endeavors of peoples around the globe. It includes study in the traditional areas of Art History - the monumental arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture - as well as objects and monuments formerly placed outside the normal territory of art, such as video productions, textiles, household goods. Individuals often choose to study Art History to satisfy a deep curiosity about how art communicates the ideas of a culture. Active research in this Program is carried out in American, Asian, and European art. The course of study in the Art History Program is designed to teach students to understand works of art and their historical context, and students will be able to situate their art history studies within a cross-cultural liberal education. The discipline is valued for its humanistic focus on cultural awareness, critical thought, and communications skills. A degree in Art History will provide the student with the intellectual skills necessary for further advanced study in graduate school, for careers in a museum or gallery, and for positions in business, medicine, law, or communications.

Amidst the complexity of our hectic lives, the simplicity and gentle grace of Degas' ballerinas charm us still. The magnificent sculptures of Rodin, and those of his lover Camille Claudel, help us celebrate the power and mystery of the human physique. Egon Schiele's drawings haunt us with their strange eroticism, while Dali transfixes us with unexpected glimpses of our own subconscious. Here in Canada, the painter Emily Carr and the Group of Seven have brought the brilliance and joy of Canadian landscape to the world, while today's Inuit and First Nations artists explore rich cultural meanings of that land.

Studio Art

Art
A hallmark of the studio art program has been its focus on a broad liberal arts experience and its small classes that enable each student to receive individualized guidance. Foundation courses serve as an introduction to two- dimensional and three- dimensional thinking. Intermediate- and upper- level courses stress more advanced and comprehensive work in drawing, painting, design, printmaking, computer/ multimedia, and photography. The computer is a critical component in the visual arts and the studio curriculum acknowledges that it will become one of the key means of forming connections between disciplines. The studio curriculum encourages experimentation and explorations of all media to prepare students for a future as a visual artist. The flexibility of the advanced program provides the student with endless potential for exciting and stimulating study. On the undergraduate level, three degrees are available. The department offers a comprehensive B. A. degree in studio art, or students can pursue the studio art B. A. with an emphasis in graphic design/ photography. The B. A. in art is a more general degree option that combines art history and studio art. Students interested in art education can pursue an undergraduate program of study leading to teacher certification. Developed with the School of Education, this program provides students with extensive studio training and a strong foundation in aesthetics and art history. It is a five- year program, with the last two years involving courses in education and student teaching. Students graduate with a very competitive dual degree in studio art and secondary education.

Virtual Catalogue for Art History (VKK) General Information Deutsch Francais Italiano The "Virtueller Katalog Kunstgeschichte (VKK)" / "Virtual Catalogue for Art History" is a specialized search engine based on the technology of the well known KVK (Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog). It is an initiative of a working group of German art libraries, formerly known as the AKB (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Kunstbibliotheken). The working group is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, or German Research Foundation). The VKK has been accessible since September 1999 and is still "under construction." Currently the participating libraries offer well over 2,5 million bibliographic records including many articles and reviews from periodicals and collections. The VKK’s primary aim is to be a gateway to the holdings, and above all to the bibliographic data, offered by the working group’s art libraries. Together, these holdings form a virtual national art library, since the libraries in question coordinate their acquisition policies according to their different specializations. Under the general national acquisition policy of lending libraries (SSG), the two German university libraries belonging to the working group are responsible for art history; their acquisition policies are coordinated accordingly by the DFG.
