The Katherine K. Herberger College of Fine Arts Definition of the field. Art history students study the history of the visual arts and the theoretical and critical literature associated with the art of different cultures. The discipline of art history requires the development of critical writing skills, and use of such fields as history, philosophy, religious studies, literature, and anthropology. Career opportunities in the field. Uniqueness of the program at ASU. The undergraduate degree program in art history at ASU is one of the most rigorous in the United States. The program is unlike most B.A. programs in that a wide spectrum of the history of art is taught by a faculty with very diverse specialities. Students must take courses in all major historical periods and also work in non-Western art traditions. Preparation for graduate work is built into the program with the undergraduate taking required research methods and seminar courses. Students must demonstrate an ability to read in at least one foreign language. Students are encouraged to take some course work outside of art history yet closely allied to the field, such as courses in museum studies, gallery exhibitions, and studio work. High school or college preparation.

I do have a few suggestions to you when surfing this site. Some dates overlap into different sections, so here are some rules to abide by when searching for something. If you are looking for an artist look in the century of which the artist lived most of their life in. If you are looking for a pottery, search for the date it was founded. Specific movements and styles in pottery will be listed according to when they were most in vogue. Please Remember this is strictly an educational tool for students, teachers, ceramists, collectors, potters, art historians, and archaeologist. http://www.gs.columbia.edu/bulletin_courses/Bulletin98/art.html
ART HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY The goal of the major in the Department of Art History and Archaeology is to explore the history of art, architecture, and archaeology across a broad historical, cultural, geographic, and methodological spectrum. Department courses take advantage of the extraordinary cultural resources of New York City and often involve museum assignments and trips to local monuments. The department offers a major and concentration in art history and in the history and theory of architecture, and a combined major in art history and visual arts. Note : Art Humanities (HUMA W1121) does not count toward the major, and no credit is given for Advanced Placement tests. Courses in which a grade of D has been received do not count toward the major or concentration requirements. Appropriate Major Cultures courses count toward the major. Advising : All newly declared majors and concentrators should make an appointment with the student coordinator who will inform them of their assigned faculty advisor. All majors are required to confer with their advisor at the start of junior and senior year to discuss their academic program. In order for courses to count for the major, students must have the approval of their advisor. The director of undergraduate studies regularly communicates with majors by e-mail to announce departmental events, museum internships, and other news. If you do not receive these messages, please contact the department office. Art History and Archaeology Course Descriptions

All SAAH majors are required to keep their University of Iowa email accounts active. All registration information will be sent to majors' uiowa email accounts. Sign-up sheets for 15 minutes advising appointments for majors with more than 24 earned semester hours will be posted on March 28, on the bulletin board outside the undergraduate adviser's office. Please sign up for one 15-minute time slot at a time (no more than one time slot a day, per person). Students must have completed Design Fundamentals and Basic Drawing prior to enrolling in an introductory studio course. Those students who enroll in an introductory or beginning course and who have not completed Basic Drawing and Basic Design will be administratively dropped the week before or the week classes begin. Class rank One of the most important pieces of information that you will need to know when registering for classes in the SAAH, is your class rank. If you look at your degree evaluation (look in your ISIS account), toward the top you will see that it lists the number of EARNED hours you have. This is the number of semester hours that you have completed. These are the hours that are used to determine your class rank.

    HISTORY OF ART UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME
    INTRODUCTION TO THE DEPARTMENT
At the University of Toronto we use the term Fine Art to describe both an historical discipline and creative studio work. In either case we are concerned with two- and three-dimensional visual forms and with the meanings such forms embody. The study of art investigates the infinite ways in which individuals (celebrated or unknown) and whole civilizations have expressed themselves materially through the agesin architecture and town planning, painting and sculpture, printmaking and the various arts of design. The transmission of ideas through things is a phenomenon that can be observed around us constantly in daily life; it is also something that happens over time, through space, and across cultures. The history of art seeks and finds significance in creations of great variety. We consider symbolic devices, articles crafted skilfully as aesthetic ends in themselves, even utilitarian objects to illustrate the artistic imagination. We explore their relevance in their original historical context wherever possible, and in relation to human values today. Enrol in Fine Art programs at the end of first year when you have four credits. Visit your college registrar and complete the form to enrol.
