Martin Cahill war nicht nur Irlands größter Gangster, er war ein Rebell und als solcher eine archetypische Figur seiner Heimat. Denn wo Briten, katholische Kirche und IRA ein mafioses Regiment führen, kann einer nur frei sein, wenn er Gangster wird. Darum ist "The General" wie jeder gute Gangsterfilm in erster Linie eine Sozialstudie. Aber er ist auch ein brutal-autoritärer Machtmensch. Boorman erliegt nicht den Klischees vieler Gangsterfilme. Entweder erklären diese ihre Figuren zu Volksfeinden, die in großer Jagd zur Strecke gebracht werden müssen. Oder sie sind klammheimliche "good guys", treusorgende Familienpapas, die trotz aller Gesetzesbrüche Recht und Ordnung schätzen, und im Grunde nichts anderes im Sinn haben, als daß es den Kleinen einmal besser geht. Boorman ist sicher näher an der zweiten Variante, doch versucht er einen "dritten Weg": Sein düsteres, ambivalentes Gangsterportrait zeigt einen Arbeiter, der bieder und mühselig im Schweiße seines Angesichts das Geld verdient (60 Millionen US-Dollar sollen es im 'wahren Leben' gewesen sein). Und er ist das Resultat der korrupten irischen Verhältnisse. Auf seinen Diebeszügen und in den Gerichtssälen begegnet dieser Outlaw (und damit die Zuschauer) allen "In-laws", allen Protagonisten der irischen Gesellschaft. Auch Cahill selbst will auf der einen Seite nichts anderes als den Aufstieg. Er lebt mit Familie in einem netten, gutbürgerlichen Viertel, züchtet Tauben und macht es sich abends auch 'mal vor dem Fernseher gemütlich.
