OAS_AD('Top'); Stuck in a nasty frame? Break free here (updated 19 February 2003)
For as long as I can remember, cemeteries have been my "church", the place where I can be alone with myself, yet not really alone. My fascination with these "cities of the dead" was a secret I kept well hidden for many years. If you love cemeteries, you may know why. For some bizarre reason, "cemetery" has become synonymous with "corpse" and, by and large, most people fear corpses. Consequently, they also fear cemeteries. Following this convoluted train of thought, if a person actually enjoys cemeteries, that person must also love corpses and must, therefore, be disturbed. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Webster defines "cemetery" as "a burial ground for the dead." "Burial" is to put (a corpse) in the ground or a vault or into the sea often with ceremony. A corpse is "a dead body, usually a human being." By definition, although connected, cemeteries and corpses are not alike. For anyone who feels they must label what they don't understand, "necrophilia" is an erotic attraction to corpses. "Taphophilia," however, is the love of cemeteries. Two entirely different fixations...er...interests.
Being a genealogist, albeit an amateur one, cemetery research is a vital component of the family tree. When I decided to "publish" a website about genealogy, it was only natural to include a page about cemeteries. As I began searching the Web, I discovered others like myself. People who love cemeteries for their serenity, their beauty, their architectural and historical significance. I had finally found a term for my passionI am a taphophile.

http://www.heraldry.ws/heraldry/
Heraldic Symbolism and Convention
My aim in putting together this section to help you to understand some of the rules and terms of heraldry. There is a lot of material to be added before this page is complete, so please be patient while I build it up as time permits. The precise origins of heraldry are cloudy at best. What is almost certain is that painting patterns on shields and / or armour has a military origin, born out of the need for a leader to be recognisable. It is said that the crusaders painted crosses on their shields and it is also said that the Romans did something similar. Indeed I have seen it claimed that Noah himself had a coat of arms. In Ireland there are many references to the battle standards of the first millennium Gaelic chieftains whose symbolism later appears on coats of arms. So some kind of visual symbolism, designed to identify individuals and groups existed before the emergence of formal heraldry.
Recent decades have seen a major rise in interest in coats of arms, mainly as a result of an increase in the numbers of people, especially descendants of emigrants, studying their genealogy and family history. Almost inevitably, at some point in the study of a family history, the question pops up, "is my family coat of arms?" This questions can generate two extremes of response.

The Family History Library has acquired permission to microfilm various records from a substantial number of places in the US, Canada, the British Isles, Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, etc.. These are often civil records such as birth, marriage and death records, and/or parish or other ecclesiastical records such as birth, christenings, marriage, death and burial records. The Family History Library (FHL) also has many books of interest to genealogical researchers; compiled family histories, histories of particular places or regions, and also collection submitted by various researchers. Many of these books and collections have been microfilmed as well.
Copies of the microfilms are available through interlibrary-loan to the Family History Centers located around the world. You can order the microfilms for viewing at the FHCs for a modest fee of $3.50/roll. A number of the resources are alternatively available on microfiche for only 15 cents/sheet plus 25 cents shipping per order.
