Researching Passenger Arrival in the United States
Of all the US documents genealogical researcher search for, the Passenger Arrival document, is probably the most sought after and valuable. It is the bridge that helps us cross from America to Europe because it can tell us from where our ancestors came. To find the document you must search the paper trail left by your ancestor working BACKWARDS through the many US documents they left. Although not mandated by governments, the Master of the Vessel, or Captain, kept a ship's manifest for hundreds of years listing its cargo and passengers. It wasn't until 1 January 1820 that the US federal government first started to regulate immigration by keeping track of incoming ship passengers. In 1882 the US Passenger Act was passed requiring all captains to keep a list of their passengers. Each arriving ship was required to submit a passenger list (manifest). A world law was finally passed in 1891 requiring the captains of every vessel to make a list of their passengers. US passenger arrival documents are available for most ports from 1820 to 1954. They can be found on microfilm at the National Archives and from the Latter- Day Saints Family History Center Library. Some large libraries, such as the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, have collections of passenger arrival on microfilms.

November/December 2001 Vol. 19 No. 6 Technology's Impact on Immigrant Records
– John Philip Colletta, Ph.D. To demonstrate, let me briefly review the traditional finding aids we have had at our disposal, then let me illustrate how these finding aids have been enhanced and expanded by CD-ROMs and the Internet. Traditional Finding Aids
Many lists of passengers bound for, or arriving in, America prior to 1820, as well as other types of colonial and early federal records containing immigrant information, have appeared in published form. These published materials are available in libraries. Lists of passengers arriving in the United States from 1820 through the 1950s, which were mandated by federal law, are on microfilm at the National Archives and accessible through the thirteen regional archives. They are similarly available at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, at family history centers worldwide, and at larger public libraries across the country. However, to find one passenger among the millions named in these voluminous records, researchers have to rely on a variety of finding aids. However, when neither National Archives indexes nor book indexes yield our ancestor, we turn to a variety of alternative strategies (depending on the facts we have to go on) using sources such as emigration lists of European ports and National Archives micropublication M1066, Registers of Vessels Arriving at the Port of New York from Foreign Ports, 1789-1919, to mention but two.

The Ships Picture Gallery Printer Friendly Version Tracing Your Immigrant Ancestors Locating the exact origins of your immigrant ancestor in in the "old country" is one the greatest research challenges facing most North American and Australian family historians. Before you can continue your genealogical research you must know where your ancestors came from because records in the "old countries" for the most part were kept on a local basis. If your ancestors immigrated in the past 100 years or so, you may be able to find information in records that are still in the possession of family members. These might include:
  • Birth, death and marriage certificates Family Bibles Baptismal certificates Funeral cards Obituary notices Diaries Photo albums, Passports Old letters (always check envelopes for postmarks and addresses) Prayer books Military records School records Insurance papers.

Introduction
This webpage is divided into two sections: Irish Immigration Records to America before 1820 (just below) and Irish Ship Passenger Lists 1820-1950s
Keep in mind that most passenger lists were handwritten. Deciphering this handwriting was sometimes difficult when the lists were later indexed. So always search for alternate spellings of a surname when using any indexes.
Irish Immigration Records to America before 1820
Prior to 1820 it was not required to keep passenger lists and many have not survived. However, there are often immigration related materials and other records that can help determine when an immigrant came to America. Here is a bibliography of this material focussing on Irish immigrants.

The increasing globalization of business practices, due in large part to the advent of new technologies like the Internet, has helped to build cyberbridges in many areas of our society. Genealogy, or the study of ones' family tree and ancestral roots, is no exception to this technological revolution. The availability of portable scanners, powerful laptop and desktop computers, and an explosion of new software programs, online databases and how-to sites have thrust genealogy into the forefront of nascent, cutting-edge social sciences. No longer limited solely to the development of one's personal family tree, the field of genealogy has become a fully fledged science in its own right. Genealogists now work alongside criminologists, medical geneticists, and historians, applying their techniques to an ever-widening scope of investigations
As new technologies become available, genealogists have worked quickly to implement them in their searches. And one of the greatest projects ever undertaken by volunteer genealogists, the computerization of Ellis Island passenger arrival records, has been made possible by advances in the computer world. Its significance cannot be underestimated for Greek-Americans, for the largest majority of Greek immigrants came through Ellis Island. Therefore, nearly every American family of Hellenic descent can benefit from using this new online database.

    Finnish Genealogy: Passenger Lists
    Leif Mether
An important source when looking for immigrants coming from Finland to North America are the passenger lists. From these records one can find out when an ancestor arrived in North America, which way did he travel and what was the name of the boat he came with, who was he travelling with, and many more details. There are two main types of passenger lists: one kept in the departure port and the other kept in the arrival port in North America. Below I will give an overview of the passenger lists from the departure ports, and at the same time give a rough overview of the travel routes used by the immigrants. Travelling from Finland to America is depending on the time period of the migration as well as from where the immigrant started his trip, and what was his destination. The direct passenger line on Finnish keels from Finland to England started in 1891. Before that time Finns had to use other ways to reach North America. The earliest migration from Finland to North America started in the 1860's, when Finns living in the northern parts of Finland and Norway started to move to Minnesota. Soon Finns also went to the mining areas in northern Michigan. A number of Finns also went through Norwegian ports after the first wave of migration. There are Norwegian passenger lists made by the local police authorities in Norwegian archives, and some of the lists are searchable on the Internet. Unfortunately the lists on the Internet are not complete, and a search is sometimes difficult because the names are spelled in a Norwegian manner.
