Immigration Records Types of Records How to Find Immigration Records Immigration Records America is a nation of immigrants, so the entry into this country is a dramatic turning point in most of our family histories. This is the chapter in our respective stories where our ancestors gave up all that was familiar to them and embarked on radically different lives, usually in search of a brighter future for themselves, their children and all their descendants.* * It is a rare genealogist who hasn't wondered about what it must have been like for their immigrant forebears, what conditions they must have endured. Fortunately, as interest in this topic grows, more resources are becoming available to help us answer these questions. In England, the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool has recreated the steerage cabins of ships to give us an appreciation for the physical reality of the ocean crossing. New York's

Researching U.S. Passenger Arrival Records by Jayare Roberts*
All genealogists are in the same boatwe are trying to trace an immigrant parent or ancestor. You may uncover clues in obituaries, passports, family sources, and an array of other records available in courthouses and archives. Perhaps the real questions are, "How long will you search for evidence of this pivotal event?" and "Will your search be as long as the voyage of your ancestor?" In the light of family and local history, each immigrant is the sine qua non of America. Yet researchers will say they are stuck because they cannot find any records. The myth that illiterate European peasants left no records in their homeland or in America is disproved by the fact that there are numerous collections of immigration and ethnic documents. You may, in fact, drown in the volume of available materials. The misfortune of most researchers is that they don't spend enough time to use the available records properly. You may save yourself time and effort by concentrating on the passenger arrival records created for the United States government. In the course of your genealogical journey you should observe the following: the general background and history of passenger arrival records the genealogical value and contents of arrival records the availability of passenger records and indexes appropriate search strategies such as the use of indexes

Does Ancestry.com's US Immigration Collection have all the answers about your ancestors? We tested this new resource to see if it's worth your money. Did your ancestors immigrate to the United States seemingly without a trace? Join the club. My aunt had fruitlessly scoured the Ellis Island passenger-lists database at www.ellisisland.org for her father-in-law, Perry Hjetland, a Norwegian emigrant who settled in Brown County, Kan. Then the subscription Web site Ancestry.com www.ancestry.com launched its US Immigration Collection in November 2003, and we found a clue to Hjetland's records within seconds. www.genealogy.com What can you expect to find?
The jewel in the collection's crown is the New York Passenger Lists, 1851-1891 index, which includes immigration records from Castle Garden www.nps.gov/cacl The collection stretches beyond New York records, though. It delivers passenger lists from all major US ports, including Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and New Orleans. The information in each record varies, but generally contains the immigrant's name, age, gender, the ship's name, and ports and dates of departure and arrival. Some database entries even furnish images of originial passenger lists, so you can verify the index details. Ancestry.com is adding new naturalization, alien, passport and border-crossing records daily.

      Overview
Passenger lists are among the most frequently requested genealogical materials, and the Library has a strong collection. As immigrants arrived at North American ports, these lists were compiled at the port of entry. The lists document the names of passengers, their age, their sex, and additional information that varies from the first lists of 1565 to the most recently released lists of 1954. Most of the pre-1820 passenger lists have been published in some format.
      • Passenger lists usually contain the name of each passenger, the port from which they came, the name of the ship, and the captain of the ship. Many of the 17th-18th century passenger lists and indexes have been printed in books, pamphlets, or journals. Consult Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1538-1900 by P. William Filby.
Pre-1820 Lists There were no laws to require the creation of passenger lists. States, colonies and cities dictated the necessity for lists and therefore, the surviving lists are widely scattered. Virtually all of the existing lists are published and are described in the Passenger and Immigration Lists Bibliography by P. William Filby (2nd edition, Detroit, Gale Research, 1988). The Library holds most of these published lists. Philadelphia was the most popular port of entry in the 18th century. 1820-1891, Customs Passenger Lists

"St. Lawrence River in Winter," by Millicent Mary Chaplin Feb. 1842

In 1865, because there were excellent rail connections and/or inward passage on Lake and River Steamers from Quebec (later from Canadian east coast ports), many thousands of immigrants destined to the US Mid-West and elsewhere in North America also arrived via Canada. DISCUSSION The passenger lists for the sailing ships may contain either a little, or quite a lot of information. The least to expect is the name of "head of household" only, with check marks indicating the numbers and sex, and age grouping of the other members of the party. The most you may expect to find is the full names and ages of all family and/or group members, their place of origin, and in a few cases, their destination. You may also find notes about the birth or death (and date) of an individual. Most lists do have the names of everyone recorded. You will not find these lists to be uniform in their content.
