Those arriving from or via the United States are recorded in border entry lists. A series of old nominal indexes exist for the 1925 to 1935 records. In cooperation with the National Archives of Canada, the Pier 21 Society in Halifax, Nova Scotia, has input the information from the passenger list indexes into this database. Also included are border entries for individuals whose surname starts with the letter C. Click here to find out how to access earlier and later immigration records.

Introduction: This is a listing of indexes to passenger lists (also called immigration records or ship manifests) in the United States from 1820 to the 1940s, including microfilm, CD-Roms, books and online indexes. If you find your ancestor(s) listed in any of these sources you should then always consult the original passenger lists. Microfilm records listed here are available from the National Archives (NARA) and some of its branches. Most are also available from LDS Family History Centers. Some public libraries (especially genealogy libraries) may also carry these items.
If you already know the date and port of arrival for your immigrant ancestor then you do not need to use these indexes. Instead visit this webpage: US Passenger Lists to learn how to find the passenger lists themselves.
A Note on Soundex: If any of the indexes below are designated as "Soundex" then you must convert the surname you are looking for to the soundex code. Visit the soundex webpage to learn the easiest way to do this.

Research at Library and Archives Canada
Passenger lists (RG 76) were the official record of immigration during this period; there are no immigrant applications or files. The lists contain information such as name, age, country of origin, occupation and intended destination. They are arranged by port and date of arrival, with the exception of some years between 1919 and 1924, when an individual Form 30A was used. The Government of Canada did not keep records of people leaving the country; there are no passenger lists for departures from Canadian ports. Terminology and Abbreviations Research Tips
  • The lists recorded the names of all passengers regardless of their country of origin or nationality. This included visitors, students, returning Canadians and passengers in transit to the United States. Lists for the port of Quebec include passengers who disembarked at Montreal between 1865 and 1921. Those ports were closed during the winter months when the St. Lawrence River was frozen. Passengers from mainland Europe usually sailed to Great Britain, where they boarded trans-Atlantic ships at ports such as Liverpool, London and Glasgow.

Finding Naturalization Records
Introduction
All Americans, except those descended entirely from Native Americans, descended from people who migrated to this continent within the past 500 years. This means that, at some time, all serious genealogists will need to use immigration and naturalization records. It is important for you to have worked on your genealogy enough to get back to the immigrant ancestor. In order to properly search immigration records, you will need a name (the fuller the better), a list of possible alternative spellings, an idea of the time the person arrived in this country, and an idea of where they lived in the country of origin. It is especially helpful to know through which port or coast they entered the U.S. If relatives or family records do not provide enough information to allow you to use the immigration records, the following sources may help. Obituaries and county histories often list a person's country, region or town of origin, and an arrival date. Birth and marriage records often give the birthplaces of a child's parents or of the couple being married.
