Hudson's Bay Company Archives Cartographic Records
(Maps and Architectural Drawings)
The Hudson's Bay Company Archives has the largest holding of fur trade maps in North America. There are nearly 12,000 maps, charts, and plans, dating from 1563 to ca. 1982. These maps are of various media, size, and quality. Pre-1870 Maps, Printed and Manuscript Pre-1870 Atlases Post-1870 Maps, Printed and Manuscript Post-1870 Atlases Architectural Drawings Total Maps: 11,609
Atlases: 37
The manuscript maps are almost exclusively by Company employees and include many of the names well known to Canadian historians: Samuel Hearne, Philip Turnor, Peter Fidler, David Thompson and Joseph Pemberton. A number of Indigenous people drew maps or provided information to Company employees, especially Peter Fidler. The most famous map of this type is entitled . . ., by Ac ko mok ki, a Blackfoot Chief, dated 1801 (G.1/25, microfilm reel 11M1). Included in the printed maps are more than fifty from the internationally-known London firm, Arrowsmith. These maps are based on information received from Company employees and R. Seale's Map of North America with Hudson's Bay and Straights, Anno 1748. The only other known copy of this map was donated by the Hudson's Bay Company to the British Museum. A large proportion of maps in the post-1870 period record lands which were available and/or sold, received under the Deed of Surrender. Other subjects include transportation (ships, supply routes and proposed railroad lines), agriculture, urban and resource development and Indian Reserves. The geographical area covered by these maps is immense and includes the vast trading areas of the Company from Labrador to British Columbia, the northwestern United States to the Arctic coast.

However, there are many resources that can help lay the groundwork and further your search for information about English, Welsh, Scottish or Irish ancestors. The Library also receives British genealogy magazines, and subscribes to several relevant databases. Please note that for the purpose of this guide, "British Isles" refers to the islands of Britain and Ireland. The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are not Included. You might use maps to locate an ancestral home or to find a reference to a town that no longer exists. In "Gazetteers: Identifying Research Localities," Ancestry 12 (4) (July/August 1994), David Thackery notes the following: "Genealogy is, among other things, an exercise in geography. Successful research often hinges on identifying the locality in which one's ancestors lived. Once we know the locality, we are in a position to consult the records and histories for the area in an effort to piece together the lives of our forebears." Pinpointing modern place-names can begin with Frank R. Abate, ed., Omni Gazetteer of the United State of America , 11 vols. (Detroit: Omnigraphics, 1991). The work is subtitled "Providing Name, Location, and Identification for Nearly 1,500,000 Populated Places and Geographic Features in the Fifty States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories." Modern towns can also be sought in

Comments And Suggestions
MAPS Maps are an important source to locate the places where your ancestors lived. They help you see the neighboring towns and geographic features of the area from which your ancestor came. Maps are also helpful in locating places, parishes, geographical features, transportation routes, and proximities to other towns. Historical maps are especially useful for understanding boundary changes. Maps are published individually or as an atlas, which is a bound collection of maps. Maps may also be included in gazetteers, guidebooks, local histories, historical geographies, encyclopedias, and history texts. Different types of maps help you in different ways. Historical atlases describe the growth and development of countries, showing boundaries, migration routes, settlement patterns, military campaigns, and other historical information. Road atlases are useful because of the detail they provide. Other types of maps include: parish maps, state maps, tourist maps, topographical maps, and air navigation maps. City maps are extremely helpful when researching in large cities such as Mexico City.
Using Maps Maps must be used carefully for several reasons:
  • There are often several places with the same name. For example, there are over 50 towns throughout the various states of Mexico that begin with the name Dolores.

GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH AT CORNELL
Introduction
The purpose of this guide is to aid the genealogist in using the resources and services of Cornell University Library effectively. The library's primary function is to support the academic research needs of the Cornell community. There is no special "Genealogical Collection" and no staff genealogist. The burden is on the researcher to organize and carry out his or her research. With proper preparation the genealogist will find much useful material in the library and a staff ready to help with specific questions. This page is designed for exploring, so don't hesitate to follow the thread of your interest through the web of links. This particular guide begins with a table of contents. You can click on any of the content items and be taken to that place in the document. Of course, you can read the whole thing right through from the beginning, too.
