... MAPS Maps can help you find where your ancestors lived. Maps can show churches, geographical features, transportation routes, and neighboring towns. Historical maps are especially useful for understanding boundary changes. Maps may be published individually or in collections called atlases Maps may also be included in gazetteers , guidebooks, local histories, and history texts. There are many types of maps. Each can help you in a different way. Historical maps describe the growth and development of countries. They show boundaries, migration routes, settlement patterns, military campaigns, and other historical information. Road maps provide details on highways, rivers, and town size. Street maps are extremely helpful when researching in large cities such as Berlin.
Using Maps Maps must be used carefully for several reasons:
  • Often several places have the same name. For example, 92 towns in present-day Germany are called Steinbach.
  • The spellings and names of some towns may have changed since your ancestors lived there. Some localities have different names in different languages. For example, the city formerly known as Breslau (Germany) was called Wroclaw (Poland) after 1945.

Maps in Manuscript Collections The purpose of this survey is to acquaint the public with the maps and the resources for finding maps in the TSLA. Maps are invaluable components of historical and genealogical research, and documentary records often cannot be fully understood without reference to them. We have a large and varied collection of historical and contemporary maps available for public use - a collection that, by and large, is under-utilized. Use of this guide will make access to these maps and the information they contain a little easier. Anyone looking for maps should always start with the Map Catalogue in the Manuscript Section. The entries in that catalogue represent the core of our map collection, as well as the best single source for locating the right map. Many of these maps are originals, some have been photocopied or encapsulated, but others remain untreated and in fragile shape. Many individual maps taken from atlases and other published sources have been copied or removed from their binding and put in the collection; they are integrated in the Map Catalogue. While the county, city, or town name will be your main subject heading in searching the Map Catalogue, you should be aware that relevant material might appear under larger headings such as "Tennessee", "Middle Tennessee", or "Southeastern States". A map that encompasses a more general geographical area may yet contain important features and details about a particular county or locale. The catalogue entries will provide certain information about what one may expect to find on a particular map, and both the catalogue and the Manuscripts staff should be consulted to try to determine the right map.

It's also a good page to bookmark if you have no interest in genealogy but would like a one-stop page to use some of the tools: locators for people, places and things; links to military sites (especially Civil War buffs), historical documents, maps, etc. I've included links to the best sites I have found on the Net but there are also some to the strange and unique. It is constantly under revision and I will be adding other categories to reflect my own eclectic interests. Stop back often to see what's new. If you find a link that is not working, or if you have some you'd like to contribute, please let me know. Comments and suggestions for improving this page are also welcome! Maps of Hertfordshire Ordnance Survey Maps Ordnance Survey maps were originally drawn up by military surveyors, in the first half of the 19th century, to cover the whole country with a uniform mapping and there is no intention of attempting to describe the history, or the very wide range of generalist and specialist maps that have been produced over the last two centuries, except to say that the modern mapping is fully digitised, and that virtually all modern road and street maps are derived from the data. Instead I will concentrate on the maps which are readily accessible and useful to the family historian. First Edition 1 inch maps : These have been reprinted and are at a scale of 1 inch to the mile. The original survey was engraved on copper plates and major changes - such as the building of railways - were added later. Rural areas are usually much as the original survey. The scale is too small to show individual fields or smaller buildings.
The above shows the kind of detail available on the 1880 maps
(from A Short History of Bernards Heath Large scale maps from circa 1880 : The 6 inch to the mile maps have been digitised and are available online from old-maps - who will sell you a map centred on the area of interest to you. This shows individual woods and fields and even buildings, and for a larger farm it should be possible to identify a number of buildings. It should be noted that for most rural districts there would have been very little change over the preceding centuries, except where open fields had been enclosed.

Research in Connecticut Cities and Towns, Part II
Hartford: The Connecticut Historical Society by Joyce S. Pendery, CG
Posted July 5, 2002
Introduction Many genealogists with Connecticut ancestors dream about a research trip to Hartford where the Connecticut Historical Society and the Connecticut State Library house the two largest collections of genealogical materials relating to Connecticut. Hartford might be described as a “one-stop genealogical research destination,” especially for anyone with limited time or ancestors from several Connecticut localities. This article will concentrate on records available at the Connecticut Historical Society (CHS). The Connecticut Historical Society, created in 1825 by a resolution of the Connecticut General Assembly, originally had as its mission to collect civil, ecclesiastical, and natural history materials relating to the United States and especially to the state of Connecticut. No mention was made of collecting family history materials. Fortunately, in the late nineteenth century, CHS librarian Albert Carlos Bates recognized the importance of such acquisitions and initiated their family history collection.

The Wisconsin Historical Society has microfilm copies of Wisconsin county plat books (ca. 1870-1900), which are accessible through interlibrary loan. Early and later county plat maps are not microfilmed but some can be photocopied on request. State atlases were published for Wisconsin in 1876, 1878, and 1881, and include county maps. They show post offices, schools, churches, and road systems, all valuable information in locating an ancestral family in Wisconsin. Geraldine Strey's Land Ownership Maps of Wisconsin, 1836-1960 . Madison, Wisconsin, n.d. is very important in determining precisely what maps are available at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Aerial photographs of Wisconsin are in the collection of the Arthur Robinson Map Library, Science Hall, University of Wisconsin, Madison. The first topographical map of Wisconsin, of the Stoughton quadrangle, is dated 1889. Bird's-eye view maps are significant in Wisconsin research, inasmuch as they cover the period from 1867 to the end of World War I. There are over 200 of these maps for Wisconsin towns and villages. Most are listed in Elizabeth Maule, Bird's Eye View of Wisconsin Communities , Madison, Wisconsin, 1977, and are also available at the Wisconsin Historical Society. The maps were drawn with great attention to the buildings existing at the time.
