Delaware Genealogy
A guide to Research in the Historical Society of Delaware Research Library Introduction Using the Library Collections Other Sources for Genealogical Research On Delaware Introduction T he history of a family over many generations lies buried in different sources and places. Like a good detective, the genealogist must search for the pieces of a family's past in those many sources such as books, documents, and manuscripts. The genealogist must also be patient and imaginative, for the search can take years and involve a string of clues that lead to new sources. The factsnames, dates, eventsthat a genealogist gathers through the years are like pieces of a puzzle. Gradually those pieces can be fitted together to make a picture of a family, its many members, and its unique history. D elaware's rich and complex colonial history offers genealogists a special challenge. Settled first by the Swedes in 1638, control of the area subsequently passed to the Dutch and then to the English, who ruled through James, Duke of York until he granted the land to William Penn in 1682. During those years Delaware was governed from a distance, so early colonial documents might be found in many places, including the archives of New York State and Pennsylvania, as well as those of Sweden, the Netherlands, and Great Britain. Many of those early records have been printed and can be found in books located in the library of The Historical Society of Delaware. A full search would require trips to many archives.

Revolutionary War Military Records
by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG Printer-friendly version Finding Your Patriot Ancestors If your ancestors were living in America during the American Revolution, it is likely that they participated in the war effort. Find out what you'll learn in the three types of military records (service records, pension records, and bounty-land warrants) and how to locate your ancestors in each. The Revolutionary War was a long one, beginning on 19 April 1775 at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts between the local militia and British troops and finally ending, officially, with the signing of Treaty of Paris in 1783. If some of your ancestors were in America during this time, it is likely that you are a descendant of one or more Revolutionary War veterans. This eight-year war generated a tremendous volume of records on the approximately 250,000 military participants, and additional records have survived that refer to several million wives and descendants of these veterans. Your ancestor's role may have been small, but it is worth the effort to search for all records that may mention him or her.

Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants
by Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck Printer-friendly version Reasons for Issuing Bounty Land Grants How the government used bounty lands to gain support for the war, thank veterans, protect their borders, and encourage settlement. A land bounty is a grant of land from a government as a reward to repay citizens for the risks and hardships they endured in the service of their country, usually in a military related capacity. By the time of the Revolutionary War, the practice of awarding bounty land as an inducement for enlisting in the military forces had been a long-standing practice in the British Empire in North America. Besides imperial bounty land grants, both colonial and municipal governments had routinely compensated participants in and victims of military conflicts with land. Land was a commodity in generous supply, and governments seized upon its availability for accomplishing their goals. While most of the states awarded bounty lands for military service, there were two exceptions. Connecticut compensated its citizenry with lands in Ohio if their homes, outbuildings, and businesses were destroyed by the British. The Nutmeg State seemingly awarded no bounty land for military service

PRACTICAL HINTS FOR USERS AND CLIENTS
In principle, all records more than thirty years old are available to the public, so long as they do not fall under the provisions of the Information Protection Act or the Personal Information Act. A printed inventory, and help guides concerning the various record groups are available in the research room. Because of the organizational procedures, archival documents are not available for use until 24 hours after being ordered. Records can used exclusively in the central research room of the Austrian State Archives (Ext. 504). Initial information will be given by the archives' directorate. If not too time-consuming, written inquiries will be answered without charge by the archive advisors. Photocopies, photographs, readerprints and microfilms can be ordered for a charge.
