Getting Started "When we were young, we weren't really interested in our roots... but now that we are interested, there is really no one left to ask." - genealogy adage Everyone has their own reasons for doing genealogy. Some people like puzzles and consider tracing family roots as an entertaining pastime. Others do it to preserve the memories and knowledge of older family members for future generations. Some people use genealogy as a means of reestablishing or reinforcing ties with distant family members. Others would like to demonstrate their relationship to famous (or infamous) personages. Some would like to write a family history. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints do it for religious reasons. No matter what your reasons, doing your family genealogy will entertain you, bring you personal rewards and leave a legacy for future generations. How do you get started doing your family's genealogy? There are certain basic steps that will make the process easier, quicker and more rewarding. These steps will avoid duplication of work, increase the value of your research, and make doing your family genealogy more fun. These steps are:

How Do I Get Started ?
Genealogy is a rewarding and fun hobby, but beginners sometimes have trouble getting started. This article will help beginners and experienced researchers. Just follow our advice and you'll do just fine.
Phase One : Take Stock of What You Have
1) The Pedigree Chart S tart a pedigree chart. Start with yourself and list all of your relatives as far back as you can go. Do this for both your mother's and father's side of the family. Try to list as much information as you can, including birth and death dates, marriage dates, baptisms, etc. 2) The Interview I nterview your relatives for any missing information. Don't be too formal. Make it a social event and don't go in there like a newspaper reporter. Record everything they tell you, even if it sounds exaggerated or hard to believe. Most family stories are based on an element of truth. Don't be afraid to record the family gossip as it can be useful to you later. Gossip can provide you with clues when you get stuck. 3) Obtain Documents G et copies of birth certificates, marriage licenses, confirmations, baptisms, military discharge papers, etc., from as many relatives as possible. These documents contain lots of valuable information. For instance, baptisms sometimes provide information on the grandparents as well as the parents of a child. They can provide the places of birth for other family members as well.

Getting Started in Internet Genealogy
With this page we try to present general information and tips on how to go about finding out more about your German ancestors. The proliferation of the Internet in recent years including the participation of hundreds of researchers has made possible an entirely new technique, Internet genealogy , which is the emphasis of this particular web page. However, our German genealogy team doesn't believe that Internet genealogy is the means to answer all of your research questions. Some questions can be answered most easily by traditional research, while others can be answered faster by the Internet. We find that an integrated approach to your genealogy will be by far the most effective way to complete your researches quickly, accurately and comprehensively. The steps below reflect this philosophy. Step 1: Identify What Is Known about Your Family
Record what information you know off the top of your head, especially full names, dates of births, marriages and deaths, and places. Then, interview elderly relatives to add the information which you do not know. Record this information as well. Look for any information which may be written down. Do you or your relatives know of the existence of any of the following, perhaps in an attic?

Starting Your Genealogy Research - The Basics
1. Start with yourself! Write down your own name, birth date, place of birth, parents, husband or wife if married, date of marriage, place of marriage, children's complete names and their dates of birth. The easiest way to do this in a format that will be easily understood is to use a Family Group Sheet . This is merely a form with places for all of the important information. You can download a nice Family Group Sheet from Ancestry.com - http://www.ancestry.com/save/charts/familysheet.htm . You will need an Adobe Acrobat reader to print out this form, but the page supplies a link to the download site for the reader if you don't already have it. You will do a Family Group Sheet for each family in your line. After you do your own family, do your parents, grandparents and so on. (If you have been married more than once, you will do a sheet for each marriage. You will end up with quite a few sheets before you are done since EACH family group needs a sheet of its own. Your mother and father's family group will have a sheet, your father's family group (your paternal grandparents) will have a sheet, you mother's family group (maternal grandaparents) will have a sheet and on and on. It is probably a good idea to go ahead and fill in Pedigree Charts at the same time. Again, these sheets can be downloaded. The Ancestry.com sheet will require the Adobe Acrobat Reader -

So you've decided to research your family history? After all, there are so many good resources online now, that genealogy research is easier than ever. But wait! Before you jump in and start searching, take a step back. It's important to take the time to get organized. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of genealogy research, and you can often find a lot in the early stages. But eventually, you will hit dead ends and slow progress, and when you do, it's important to have good records. Our genealogy starting guide can get you on the right path.
Step 1: Have a plan
It's important to have a plan before you start researching your genealogy, and to continue to update that plan as you find out more. This helps keep you on track and keeps you from running in circles (easy to do in genealogy research!). Before you go to a web site, library, or archive, know specifically what information you are looking for. Work on one or two people at a time, and plan what information you are searching for in each session. Although chance can play a part in genealogy, and many people I know have accidentally "come across" an important piece of genealogical information, it doesn't pay to approach the geneology research in a haphazard manner.
Step 2: Keep good records
I can't emphasize enough the importance of keeping good records when working on your family history. You should record not only evey genealogical fact that you find, but the source for that fact as well. You should also record what sources you have checked for a given piece of information

Locating a person in Dundee/Angus
Sometimes you may have difficulty in locating an ancestor using the Census. They may not be at the address you had expected, perhaps because that address referred to an inter-censual year. However, there are others sources of information available, which can further your research or simply corroborate what you have already discovered. See Local Sources for information on where to find these resources in Dundee/Angus. Directories Directories come in many forms: street, trade, occupational. The Dundee Directory, for example, which can be viewed in the Local Studies Department of Dundee Central Library, was published annually. It covers the period from 1783 until 1974, with some missing volumes mainly in the earlier years. Each volume is arranged alphabetically, as well as by street and occupation and contains a vast amount of information on the town and its inhabitants. Entries in the earlier books tend to be confined to the more prominent and wealthy members of society, but those from the later 19th century onwards contain information on a much wider range of people. From a practical point of view, directories can be useful in tracing the movements of an ancestor. You may find an address to look up in the census, or the sudden absence of someone previously documented might indicate that the person has died or left the area. However, they also give a flavour of what life was like for inhabitants of the area, through the abundant and fully documented advertising and they include for example, comprehensive listings of town office bearers, memberships of various societies, details on shipping, banking, commercial information and sometimes a map of the area.

This regular posting contains a list of pointers and suggestions to help somebody who is approaching the subject of Genealogy for the first time. It should be read by anyone who wishes to post to the soc.genealogy.* newsgroup hierarchy.
This document is part of a regular series of postings which are sent to all appropriate groups and mailing lists. This particular document is posted on the 15th of every month.

I am new to Genealogy and would like some help
For those just starting to research their family history, these short notes might help:
1. Visit your local library and do some reading on genealogy. This should give you some basic guidance on the methods to use, and where the information is held. There are many useful introductory books on Genealogy and family history, which will provide you with more complete and coherent guidance as how to get started than you could expect to get merely by posting a series of questions to the newsgroup or mailing list.
2. Develop a plan. Think about which lines to follow. You have two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, and so on. You have to draw the line somewhere. You can use your time better if you develop a plan to guide you. Start with talking with and writing to all your kinsfolk with your questions, (while they are still alive), and do it soon.

Getting Started
Okay, so you think you may be French-Canadian or Acadian, and you want to know how to begin. The first thing you have to do is find the oldest member of your family and find out everything he or she knows. You MUST get back a few generations on your own before you will be able to find printed or online sources that will be able to help you. If nobody in your family can tell you where your grandparents came from, then you will need to try looking for marriage certificates, birth certificates, death certificates, etc., which may have additional information. This can be a tedious process, but there are really no shortcuts unless you are very lucky. The one source that may help you is the nearest Family History Center (FHC) of the Mormon Church (otherwise known as the Church of Jesus Christ - Latter Day Saints). They will know the best way to find information in your local area, and will have references that will give addresses for applying for birth and death certificates. Their IGI (International Genealogical Index) is a computerized list of genealogical items about people all over the world. Some of the information has been copied from the original church records and is pretty reliable. Some has been submitted by amateur genealogists. This information is very uneven, some is quite incorrect, and so it must be taken with a grain of salt.
