Americans of Germanic ancestry make up the single largest ethnic group in the United States. One in four Americans claims to have Austrian, German, or other Germanic ancestors somewhere on their family tree. By the time of the Revolutionary War there were an estimated 225,000 German-Americans, comprising almost nine percent of the total population of colonial America. Germans fought on both sides of the Revolution, with 30,000 Hessian mercenaries hired by the British and the Prussian Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben enlisted by George Washington to whip the American troops into shape. Many of the Hessians remained in the New World and several waves of German migration followed over the years. A great number of Austrians and Germans came to the "land of unlimited opportunity" ( ) in the years from the 1880s to the 1920s, usually for economic reasons. Others were later forced into American exile by the Nazi regime.

Getting Started in Genealogy
Researching your ancestors and the history of your community can be fun and rewarding. By learning more about your family's history, you will have a better understanding of who you are and your heritage. You can begin by viewing, printing, and entering information on the Record of Ancestry chart. The ancestry chart is provided in a PDF (Portable Document Format) file, which can be viewed or printed using your Web browser and Adobe Acrobat Reader software. Macintosh and Windows versions of Acrobat Reader may be downloaded free of charge from Adobe.
Click here to find out how to obtain the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Download the Record of Ancestry chart
(Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or later). Remember, you eventually will need to verify your entries by consulting the original records of these events. This careful documentation of family history marks the work of a good genealogist.
Where to begin Your local library can provide you with any number of books from which you can learn the fundamentals of genealogy. Your local librarian can often provide the names and addresses of local genealogical and historical societies. The people in these organizations are more than happy to encourage you in your new hobby and offer helpful advice. Researching your family history By Susannah Davis More on how to do history Take a History Trail 1 of 9 Getting started A family chart Libraries Graveyards and cemeteries ... Printable version Discover the logical way to tackle archives and libraries, get help from the many organisations devoted to family history and find your way round the increasing number of resources available on the Internet. A birth certificate Getting started Have you ever thought of tracing your family history, but were put off by words like PRO, Census, Tithes, Manorial records and IGI? Have you ever made a start and felt you were drowning in lists of useful addresses, or lost in a record office, or depressed by the world supply of microfilm? You're not alone! But fear not: this guide aims to briefly explain a logical way to research your family history. Once you get going, you'll be one of thousands of people in pursuit of their ancestors and you will probably find yourself contacting others, getting and giving help. It need not be a solitary occupation. Work backwards Remember the cardinal rule of genealogy: work backwards, beginning with what you know. Resist all temptations to go directly to that son of Charles I that your grandfather told you about… there might be a grain of truth in the story, but you'll get nowhere for sure unless you move steadily back in time from one generation to the next. Never presume that you must be related to somebody just because you have the same surname, however unusual. Your initial approach should include immediate relatives who may have all sorts of useful information such as correspondence, photographs and addresses of others whom you may wish to contact.

ORGANIZE YOUR INFORMATION Genealogical research involves looking for specific people in specific places at specific times. The best place to start is with living family members. Collect information from your family through interviews, Bible and other family records and cemetery inscriptions. Using this information fill in an ancestor chart with names of known ancestors.
  • Record your name in space 1, your father's name in space 2 and your mother's name in space 3 using her maiden name. Add the names of your father's parents in spaces 4 and 5 and the names of your mother's parents in spaces 6 and 7.
  • Record the date and place for each birth, marriage, and death known, as well as the sources of your information about each event.
  • Continue to add new ancestors in the same manner as they are discovered and proven.
GO to top BEGIN YOUR RESEARCH Begin your research in the Library by checking our catalog (login: public - password: public) to see if there is a genealogy of your family. Check to see if there are published indexes and/or abstracts/transcriptions of records for a specific time and place.

The goal of any Japanese genealogist is to make a connection into the koseki "tree". To find a koseki you must be able to find the local ward office the koseki record is kept, and the name of the head of the family and his/her address in Japan. Thus your initial search for background information in the United States should center around the above requirements. Once the above information is determined, a request for a koseki can be made. Getting Started in Genealogy
Researching one's ancestors discovering the many events in their lives and exploring who they really were through books and documents can be one of the most rewarding and most educational experiences of a lifetime. Beginning one's genealogical research is as simple as starting to gather and record all the information and family data you have available to you in your home and among your various relatives. This is the best way to begin. This data can be recorded on five-generation charts available in the Historical Genealogy Department, or simply written on notebook paper. Being as thorough and complete as possible at this initial data collection stage will posture you for success as you continue your endeavors. Once you have gathered your initial data, begin to organize it in a chronological fashion. (That's one reason why using five-generation charts is so helpful!) Now you're ready to explore the tomes of local and family history data you will find all over the world.
