Introduction to Scottish Family History
Where to start
As with family history in other areas of the world, the first place to start is with your own family. Try to gather as much information as you can from relatives, old family documents and the like. With luck you will be able to piece together a simple family tree. Concentrate in particular on gathering details of when and where your forebears lived. Older relatives may be able to provide useful clues. The more information you can gather now, the easier your research will be later. Further tips on Getting Started in Genealogy and Family History are given elsewhere in GENUKI. The next stage is to move onto the main sources of information on Scottish forebears.
General Register Office for Scotland
This is the first port of call for most people tracing their Scottish ancestry, housing a wealth of information. For people born over 100 years ago, there is access online at ScotlandsPeople . Initial searches are free, detail of records is available for a fee. For people born within the last 100 years, you can write to the General Register Office to ask them to search the records on your behalf, or if your search will be a lengthy one, they may recommend that you hire a professional searcher to carry out the work. However the best way to search the records if you are able to is in person. For a daily fee you have unlimited access to the indexes (mostly computerised) and self-service instant access to the records. You can make notes from the records at no extra cost, or if you require a photocopy or extract, can order this for a moderate fee. In a day you can consult a great many records, at no additional cost.

My Grandparents:
"To the Lineal Descendants of Ulrich Newcomer (Neukommet) through his son, Jacob Newcomer, who was born March 29, 1765, this Record is dedicated. To those through whose veins the same blood courses that courses through my own veins, is extended greetings of kindred Love, Charity and Respect." James K. Newcomer, (1882)
Wauseon, Ohio
Newcomer - Gray - Bavin - Britton
Williamson - Jidov
surname page referenced below. It is my practice to exclude from this on-line database any vital data on people still living. Variations of the Newcomer name in the first generations in North America include Naycommet, Neukommer, Neukommet, Neukomm, Nieucomer, Nieuwkommet. The most extensive and best discussion of Newcomer origins I've come across. is:
Early Newcomers of Lancaster County ; Virginia N. Lane; Mennonite Family History ; Vol II, No. 3; (July 1983). Reprints are available at: Mennonite Family History ; Route 1, Box 20; Morgantown, Pennsylvania 19543-9701. I consider this article a must read for anyone researching a Newcomer family.

Hello! Thanks for stopping by Marston Manor! Please step into our parlor, and share our family genealogy. Winthrop S. MARSTON , Dad (1904-1978), was born and raised in North Hampton, NH, and it seems that "99.44%" of his ancestors all came from the Hampton, NH, area since its founding in 1638. The foundation of the farm house where Dad and his three brothers were born now serves as the foundation of the Sagamore Hampton Golf Club . While that might have been bad news for many, I think he would have found solace from the fact that his birth place is now marked on road maps by a golf course flag. He was a golfer. Captain William MARSTON, Sr. [1590-1672], a Quaker, was one of the original founders of Hampton. His birth place was Ormesby in County Norfolk, England , where many of the other early Hampton settlers were born.
Marston House, Hampton, ca 1895? Was this the house that the Captain built as a one-room home in 1654? My grandmother MARSTON was Carrie Adora DRAKE [1866-1954] who was born, raised and married in

The National Archives holds many of the records which are relevant to Irish genealogy and local history. Although it cannot undertake research on behalf of members of the public, it has, since January 2003, an in-house Genealogy Service which offers a free, short personal consultation service by professional genealogists to visitors to the National Archives who are researching their family tree. Records complementary to those in the National Archives which are also helpful for genealogical research are those relating to births, marriages and deaths, held in the General Register Office , 8-11 Lombard St. East, Dublin 2. These pages are intended as a guide to the resources of the National Archives for members of the public who are beginning a search on the history of their family. It is advisable to read these pages prior to a visit to the National Archives, as it will enable the staff of the Reading Room to assist with any queries or problems which readers may have.

Federal Land Records offsite link Links In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. This idea has been expanded and includes all areas of the United States and became the USGenWeb project. At the same time, volunteers were found that were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. PREFACE TO THE 2nd EDITION In the last two years there has been a plethora of new websites and home pages bearing on genealogy of former Czechoslovakia. The second edition which has been completely revised and significantly enlarged has been prompted by the great receptivity of the first edition and the desirability of keeping the information as current as possible. This version should be, nevertheless, considered still tentative because our search for relevant websites has not as yet been completely finished. In this connection, the compiler would consequently appreciate being informed of any other links that ought to be included.
