As a member of the association I had the chance to take part of the event. There was no lecture this time, as the sit down part of the meeting was dedicated to the annual assembly with bureaucratic agenda: reports, budget, etc.

Getting Started 1. Identify what you know about your family.
  • Gather information about family members by using family Bibles, journals, letters, newspapers, obituaries and ask relatives.
Write what you know about your ancestors on a pedigree chart. Start with yourself as # 1.
    Write "surname" in all caps.
List the dates: i.e. (08 Mar 1895) instead of 3/8/1895.
    Write places in order: City/Township/County/State
2. Decide what you need to learn.
  • Born? Place? Married? Place? Died? Place?
Pick one of your ancestors and try to identify needed information (document pertinent information on other relatives as you find it). 3. Select records to search.
  • There are two types of genealogical records. Compiled Records: These records have already been researched by others, such as biographies, family histories. Original Records: Records that were created at or near the time of an event, such as; birth, marriage, death or census records.
Be sure to check computer resources that are available.

January/February 1998 vol. 16 no. 1 Using Organizational Records in Family History
– Curt B. Witcher Some of the most successful genealogical research can be done when the researcher makes an effort to build a context for the family being investigated and the potential ancestors being sought. In the process of building an appropriate historical context, one can discover a host of documents and record groups that might not otherwise be readily considered. These documents can provide interesting details and important research leads, as well as valuable insights into the lives of families in previous generations. The records of institutions, businesses, and organizations which were a part of our ancestors' lives are one such group of records genealogists should explore. When one finds an ancestor in some of the more frequently used records (e.g., census, vital, land, and court), it is often worthwhile to spend a little time discerning what institutions and organizations existed in the same area and time period. The ancestor in question may have belonged to a club, society, or organization whose records could provide additional details about his or her life, family, and origins. City and county directories, county and town histories, as well as data gleaned from other family records, can all provide information about the existence of organizations.
