With thousands of new web pages being added on a daily basis, it is sometimes difficult to find the data for which you are searching. This page provides links to searchable (or semi-searchable) genealogical databases and sites, along with maps and online books. All web pages linked here have data. Links to maps for particular areas are being listed for that locality. Each entry has a map image in front of it - and the maps are generally not searchable. There's nothing quite like having a library online - especially if the library contains books that are helpful, sometimes even vital, for genealogical research. Online books often do not have search capacities, and are therefore not included in the searchable links below. These books, however, are too vital to ignore, and are included here. My favorite genealogical libraries also have a large collection of state, county, and town histories

  • Please Note: It appears some standard web sites, such as the USGS: Geographic Names Information System , may be inaccessible. Hopefully, this is temporary, so links to these have not yet been removed. Please be aware that some links on this site may not work due to these changes.

  • When you find ancestors, are you interested in learning more about the history they lived? Do you want to explore new directions to solve the unsolved mystery? What was home and family life like? What did they eat? wear? read? What were the important happenings? Why were the wars fought and who fought them? How in the world did they move about? What is a tythingman anyway? This page is being created, on a volunteer basis, to explore the world of our ancestors who resided in Massachusetts. Through your genealogical research, you have learned something about your ancestors. How do you learn more? How do you solve the unsolved mystery? My answer to both is to learn more about genealogical research by learning more about the history your ancestors lived . After all, isn't genealogy the history of individuals and families?

This page is written as a finding aid for beginning genealogists interested in families from North Carolina. As such, there are general sources applicable to all beginning genealogists, and some applicable only to North Carolina genealogy. Introduction to the Field
In its broadest sense, genealogy is the study of one's family and how one is related to other family members, be they immediate family members or distant ancestors. In order to find more about a person's ancestors, most genealogists interview relatives, study public records, and read published genealogies (written accounts of people and their descendants or ancestors). While the amount of work involved can seem daunting to the beginning genealogist, it can easily turn into a fascinating adventure in rediscovering lost family connections to the past.
When using an online catalog or a search engine to find resources concerning genealogy in North Carolina, the following subject headings or keywords are very useful for finding what you want. Simply do a subject or keyword search with the appropriate subject heading or keyword. Please remember that your search strategy will vary depending on the online catalog or search engine you use. Be sure to read all the available instructions. You may be able to do more advanced searches by using the Boolean operators "and," "or," and "not."
