I have found that most of my ancestors were also farmers in the midwestern area of the United States. I have raised three children and have nine grandchildren. After working on my website for several months, I have come to the conclusion that it will never be finished. There is always something new to add. If you do not find what you are looking for today, please come back and check again. You may find it tomorrow.

Menifee County is located in the midst Daniel Boone National Forest between the 8,270 acre Cave Run Lake and the Red River Gorge. Menifee became the Commonwealth's 113th county in 1869 when it was formed from the adjoining counties of Bath, Montgomery, Morgan, Powell, and Wolfe counties. Menifee was named after Richard H. Menefee, a well-regarded statesman and successful lawyer. Mr. Menefee was serving in the state legislature when he ran for Congress in 1837 and defeated Judge Richard French in a vigorous campaign. Mr. French was equally well known and admired; and his name was chosen for the county seat, Frenchburg. Mr. Menefee's untimely death in 1841 at the age of 31 ended a successful career. He was the youngest person in Kentucky and perhaps in the nation to have a county named for him. The misspelling of the county name occurred in the legislature when the county was chartered. WELCOME TO MILTON COUNTY, GEORGIA
    Last updated August 10, 2005
    HISTORY OF MILTON COUNTY
Milton County was named for John Milton, Georgia's first secretary of State. He was credited with saving the official records of Georgia when the British occupied the state. Some of his descendants were General Homer V. Milton of the 1812 war, Governor John Milton of the state of Florida, General William H. Milton of the Confederate Army, and Mrs. William Y. Atkinson, wife of the Governor Of Georgia. Thanks to W.S. Bates, Milton County Historian, Old Milton County History and Genealogy Group, for this information. Milton County was formed in 1857 from parts of Cherokee, Forsyth and Cobb Counties. Portions of DeKalb and Gwinnett counties were annexed in 1859. The county seat was Alpharetta.
Milton County was a very poor county. There was only one paved road and no school buses. Fulton County wanted to expand and promised Milton County paved roads, school buses and a better school if they agreed to a merger. Roswell, which was never a part of Milton County, was also approached. In 1932 Milton County, along with the city of Roswell, became part of Fulton County.
My name is Edna Strickland (ednab@mindspring.com) and I am the person responsible for the Milton County page. If you would like to contribute your information to this page, please contact me.

In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Georgia Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Georgia, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web pages.

Knott County, the 118th county in order of formation, is located in the heart of the rugged mountains of eastern Kentucky. The county is bounded by Perry Breathitt Magoffin Floyd ... Pike , and Letcher counties, and covers an area of 352 square miles. It was formed from portions of Perry, Letcher, Floyd, and Breathitt counties in 1884. The county was named for Gov. James Proctor Knott (1883-87). The county seat is HINDMAN. Letcher County legislator Robert Bates helped to oversee the creation of the new county, which is the site of the headwaters of several major creeks that flow into either the Big Sandy or Kentucky rivers. Knott is the only Kentucky county that does not have a river within its boundaries or bordering it.
