If you have an article or idea with an appropriate topic, please e-mail me April, 2005 Breckenridge Bible Update The family Bible containing the most genealogy information has been returned to its descendants this month by Nick Nejadeh. The Breckenridge Bible , containing 37 pages packed full of genealogy information on many different descendant lines was finally returned to its family this month. The Breckenridge family of South Dakota was having its genealogy researched by genealogist Steve Baggs, who discovered the Bible during his research. The family got a little more than it bargained for from Steve's research. "I had Mr. & Mrs. Breckenridge stop by later this afternoon and, as I anticipated, he was speechless. I'm not sure, but I think I detected a small lump in his throat and watery eyes. Anyway, he was flabbergasted that family heirlooms such as those could be found via cyberspace and suddenly turn up." Good job, Nick!

Family Bible Genealogy Links We hesitate to include a section on Family Bible links, because the Internet is so ephemeral. Links go bad faster than we can repair them. It is for this reason, that we decided to not add Bible entries to the site that were not entirely located here*. It is difficult to identify (and subsequently de-index) Bibles or links that are abandoned. However...the Cyndi's List At the Rootsweb site, choose the surname or location of interest, and sort on just the Bibles. My estimate of Bible records there is below, but it is difficult to get an actual count. Additionally, there appears to be more than 2000 messages of people searching for lost Bibles. These are a few handpicked Bible sites that contain many Bibles. We have determined these to be reasonably permanent and currently maintained. Should any of these links go dead, please let us know. We are researching the families of William B. West who came to Middle Tennessee from the Carolinas. He along with these families
traveled to Washington County, Georgia, and later into Dickson
and Sumner County, Tennessee. In 1814 William's son James bought
land in Lincoln County, Tennessee where he raised a large family,
leaving many decendants. William and James traveled, settled
and married into these families: AYERS,DeFORD,McMILLEN,TAYLOR,
LACKEY,WYATT,WILSON,SANDERS and others. These families also
contributed many soldiers in the Revolutionary War and were
rewarded with many land grants.
George Koonce also traveled from the Carolinas into Tennessee, where many of his decendants continue to live. This family also fought in the Revolutionary War. Some of the families that are allied with him are: PRICE,McGEE,LOCKER,ZUMBRO,ARMSTRONG,HARRIS, KELSO and others. We ask your help with any corrections and additions that anyone may have. These surnames also need attention: REESE,GANT,McNATT,DUNN

Carefully record the important facts of your own life and what you know of your parents and grandparents. Consult other members of your family and close family friends and collect the information they know or have gathered. You may find that a family member has saved family papers, newspaper clippings, obituaries, family Bibles, or other treasures. Compile a genealogical chart showing the names of your immediate ancestors with their birth, marriage, and death dates, and the places where each event occurred. Check for books on local and family history. The Library of Virginia has a large collection of published family histories.

Recent Additions to the R. Stanton Avery Collections at NEHGS The R. Stanton Avery Collections at NEHGS contain over two million items that have been acquired since the Society's founding in 1845. Here we will list new additions to the manuscript collections on a regular basis. The following list shows new items and collections acquired in 2003. Patrons should note that collections that have not yet been processed are indicated by the word "closed." These collections cannot be accessed (no exceptions) until they are processed, at which time the access restriction is lifted and the collection gains "open" access status. Milam County Bible Records Project
Recently, the Milam County Genealogical Society, on-line at: http://www.geocities.com/milamco/ , announced it is collecting copies of birth, death and marriage entries from old Milam County Family Bibles for publication. This project will take in Bibles from the areas that included the original boundaries of Milam County. The purpose of this project is to collect and preserve Family Bible Records. The records should have a Milam County connection. After records are published they will be archived at the Milam County Genealogical Research Center at the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library in Rockdale for future generations. Why are Family Bibles important? First, there is a wealth of information that can be found in these old Bibles. Second, many contain information from a time-period when there were no birth or death certificates. Third, in the case of Milam County, all public records prior to 1874 were destroyed when the Courthouse burned. There are 33 counties that were comprised out of lands that were contained within the original boundaries of the Milam County. When the courthouse burned, the early records for these areas were destroyed as well.
