123. Politicizing Gender
An anarchist transgendered womyn examines many issues, such as Brandon Teena and gender essentialism.
http://www.spunk.org/texts/pubs/lr/sp001714/gender.html
Politicizing Gender:
Moving toward revolutionary gender politics
by Carolyn It is important for me to confront the differences and similarities between myself and other women. It's essential that we don't ignore our uniqueness nor rank our oppression. Acknowledging the specific nature of the oppression transgender people face, we can begin to deal with oppression not just from a theoretical base, but by "grappling with" what Cherrie Moraga describes as "the source of our own oppression, without naming the enemy within ourselves and outside of us, no authentic, non-hierarchical connection among oppressed groups can take place." Transsexualism: limiting identities and sources of power Gender is not solely a psychological state of being, it is a political status. I've chosen to identify Transgender as a word of liberation in my hopes of forging a common language of liberation with all gender outlaws. Transgender identity indicates a refusal to separate transsexuals from bulldaggers, transvestites, drag kings, drag queens, femmes, intersexes, androgynies, genderfucks and those who refuse all stated categories. However, this position is not necessarily widely held in these communities. Women's Liberation: What kind of revolution?

GAIN: Gender in Africa Information Network
"two small pieces of wood separated will not burn but put together they will blaze up." GAIN aims to: facilitate communication, discussion and information sharing between organisations and people interested in gender and women's issues in Africa. As a network, GAIN is committed to making indigenous information on women and gender valued, visible and accessible globally and participate in the global information society in order to promote gender justice and women's rights in Africa. GAIN seeks to:
  • link people across Africa working in the field of gender information
  • act as a platform to share news, information and issues
  • facilitate the training of members in the use of new technologies
  • assist organisations in the disseminating publications
  • facilitate resource sharing and partnerships
What is GAIN: GAIN is a network of participants with no formal membership. However, people are welcome to join the GAIN listerv as 'members' and to complete a standard application form so that the secretariat has a database of participants. The network encourages participation of not only documentalists, but activists, researchers, journalists etc who have an interest and commitment to gender related issues in Africa and the dissemination of information. At present participation is limited to those working and living in Africa. Background: In March 1997, The African Gender Institute hosted a pan-African workshop for librarians and documentalists who work with gender related material in Africa. Twenty participants met in Cape Town for five days and through a participatory process aimed at maximum participation, discussed and debated issues of collective concern. The overall goal was: to work towards sustainable and appropriate communicative mechanisms for documentation centres and libraries committed to the collection, management and dissemination of information on gender in Africa. Where the Girls Aren't
Where the Girls Aren't
One camp says that girls see computers as a communications tool, and the best way to engage them is to exploit that and offer classes that stress using programs say, designing Web sites or online magazines over creating them. The other side says that such preferences exist only because no one has tried to expand girls' technological horizons. Posted by rshah on January 12, 2003 Comments (0)

Gettin’ Jiggly Wit It
But this is more than tits and giggles — it’s serious business. Digital breasts that move like real ones were previously impossible to achieve. An enormous amount of modeling, programming, math, and physics underlie these new, um, developments. “I never imagined that I’d be using my expertise in this manner and consider myself very, very lucky,” says XXX programmer Nick Torkos. “Hopefully this will convince others to study math.” Posted by rshah on January 09, 2003 Comments (0)

The CyberHood is sponsored by the Urban Affairs Association (UAA) and the Center for Urban Studies, Department of Urban and Regional Planning , University at Buffalo. The Urban Affairs Association is the international professional organization for urban scholars, researchers, and public service providers. The CyberHood is based on the belief that many students, scholars, practitioners and activists of color are isolated from one another and from progressive whites, who are also concerned about the plight of communities of color, conditions in the inner city, and the problems of low-wage white workers. The goal is to make the CyberHood a place where students, scholars, practitioners, and activists from across the racial and class divide can find one another and build meaningful relationships. The building of such connections, we believe, will strengthen the struggle to understand and transform inner cities and the metropolitan regions of which they are a part. MAIN PAGE Featured Question

with Transgender Parents
Why COLAGE is committed to serving people with transgender parents:
We feel that the issues affecting kids with gay, lesbian, bi, and transgender parents, stem from our parents not conforming to "normal" gender roles. We all have issues about "coming out", our own identity, school-based harassment, and so on. As with kids with bisexual parents, the issues are too similar to ignore. We won't change our name (we like the acronym!), but our mission includes transgender families. Interview of a teenager with a transgender parent (from our newsletter).
Definitions:
(there are no commonly agreed upon definitions for many of these terms, but here's a general idea). We're always trying to improve our explanations, please contact COLAGE with suggestions .
Transgender: a blanket term often used to describe everyone who does not conform to the social roles that their biological sex is supposed to play. This is independent of sexual orientation.
Transsexual : Someone who feels that their biological sex does not match their psychological gender. Usually a transsexual is living as the preferred sex, and will, or has had operations to change some of the physical aspects of their sex. Transsexuals can be straight, gay, or bi.
