AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Rationale
The period since the Second World War has seen major changes in patterns of industrial employment around the world. The manufacturing sector in Western Europe and North America has declined in terms of employment. Industrial development in the 'Third World' has been variable, the rapid transformation of the so-called newly industrializing countries contrasting with the far more modest industrialization rates of Africa. National boundaries have become increasingly permeable to transnational capital and a new international division of labour has been established. This bibliography has been produced using a bibliographic database developed by the authors as a research tool, and each reference includes a summary of the research as well as keywords associated with it. The characteristics of the database, in particular the keywords developed during the research, are discussed in the following section.
About the Authors
Dr Caroline Wright, a lecturer in the Centre for the Study of Women and Gender at the University of Warwick, has research interests in gender and industrialization in southern Africa and, more generally, in the relationships between gender relations and macroeconomic change.

They can and must play a powerful role in reducing poverty and fostering sustainable development. This is emphasized in a recent Millennium Project expert report. Yet, discrimination against women and girls is the most pervasive and persistent form of inequality. Discrimination against women pervades almost every aspect of life. Gender-based violence shatters the lives of countless individuals and is a threat to peace and security For more than 30 years, UNFPA has been in the forefront of bringing gender issues to wider attention, promoting legal and policy reforms and gender-sensitive data collection, and supporting projects that empower women economically and politically. HOME WORLDWIDE Gender Issues Overview ... Resources ICPD Programme of Action, Principle 4 Gender Issues Greater empowerment for women, less gender-based violence and greater equity and equality between men and women are acknowledged to be essential for progress in human development. Yet gender-based discrimination and violence pervade almost every aspect of life, in Asia and the Pacific as elsewhere, undermining women's opportunities and denying them the ability to fully exercise their basic human rights. HIV/AIDS is partly driven by attitudes related to gender roles. Because of their subordinate position and economic dependence, millions of women and girls cannot insist on fidelity, demand condom use, or refuse sex to their partner, even when they suspect he is already infected. Cultural beliefs and expectations about "manhood" often encourage risky sexual and drug-taking behaviour in men. This puts them and their partners—at heightened risk. Engaging men as partners in fighting AIDS is critical to changing the course of the pandemic. Violence against women, fueled by poverty, discrimination, weak legislation and poor enforcement, is evident in the growing trade in trafficking women and children. The demand for cheap labour and a proliferating and highly profitable commercial sex industry have made trafficking in persons (though illegal) a very lucrative business globally, functioning as organized crime and generating huge profits for traffickers. The fact that the sex industry is a driving force of the HIV epidemic has added urgency to global anti-trafficking efforts, particularly in Asia.

This site is made possible by its sponsors. Please visit them! g ender issues - The word "gender" refers to sexual identity. Nearly all of us are either male or female a simple place to start. It gets more complicated when we realize that there are many ways to interpret what maleness and femaleness can mean to each of us. What it means to be, perceive, and interact with other people depends, at least in part, on how each of us understands one another's maleness or femaleness. Those meanings are invariably deeply important in every person's life socially (economically, educationally, politically, sexually, etc.), and of course artistically. Because the implications can range from those at superficial levels to those of tremendous consequence, gender issues have always carried great potential for controversy, often resulting from unfortunate stereotypes Xenophobia has been a virulent evil across many cultures, across time and around the world. Its subcategories include racism, sexism, homophobia, and religious intolerance. Gender issues might pose or address such questions as:
  • What are historical and current gender stereotypes? Which are formed genetically and which are formed socially? How do these function in society? In art?

Besides being an important resource for developing children's language skills, children's books play a significant part in transmitting a society's culture to children. Gender roles are an important part of this culture. How genders are portrayed in children's books thus contributes to the image children develop of their own role and that of their gender in society.

    Gender Issues
"Because with boys failure is attributed to external factors and success is attributed to ability, they keep their confidence, even with failure. With girls it's just the opposite. Because their success is attributed to good luck or hard work and failure to lack of ability, with every failure, girls' confidence is eroded. All this works in subtle ways to stop girls from wanting to be astronauts and brain surgeons. Girls can't say why they ditch their dreams, they just "mysteriously" lose interest." Women and men have more diverse needs. How can we meet the needs of any special group, while not denying opportunities for another group? Gender Issues in Distance Education Discussion Board ICDE is fortunate to have a multitude of talented and experienced educators in the field of gender equity and fairness in distance education. This Forum is intended to bring together those educators and researchers, both female and male, in the field of gender equity in an open, professional, sharing environment. This Forum is not politically aligned and will not be a sounding board for political adversaries. Welcome to the Malawi SDNP Gender Pages. GENDER is a concept which is used to refer to women and men. This term is used to convey the fact that in most cases, the social distinctions between men and women; for example the postions they play and the social status they have are socially contructed and allocated. Gender is distinguished from sex, which is biologically determined. Because "gender" is socially contructed, it is affected by many factors and therefore, it varies in time, place and context. The Malawi SDNP Gender Pages provide information on gender policy, issues and activities in Malawi.

GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT MORE THAN A POLICY: A COMMITMENT DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE , as an organization devoted to development, social justice and solidarity, adopted a policy in March 1995 to help ensure equitable relations between women and men. The policy applies to our members, our staff and our partners in the South, both in terms of structures and programs.
The Policy's General Objectives The policy supports a Gender and Development approach designed to contribute to the full recognition of women's rights as human rights. It hopes to ensure fairness and equity so that women and men can participate on an equal basis in decision-making and in developing a better society. It is based on the philosophy underlying equal opportunity programs, whose purpose is to counter discrimination against women in organizations and society at large. Policy Implementation Action Goals As a result of its Gender and Development program, DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE is committed to:
    • Developing mechanisms to integrate Gender and Development considerations into all stages and all levels of our operations. Taking steps to increase women's representation at all levels and in all decision-making bodies in the organization.

    Know the Facts
Breast cancer is on the rise for women of Asian and Pacific Islander descent living in the United States. Yet Asian and Pacific Islander women over age 40 get mammograms less often than other groups of women in the U.S. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recommends that women in their 40s and older get a mammogram every 1 to 2 years. NCI, in cooperation with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), produced a new brochure about the importance of mammograms called "Do It for Yourself, Do It for Your Family." To order free copies of the brochure in English, Chinese, Tagalog (a.k.a. Pilipino), and Vietnamese, call NCI's Cancer Information Service at 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237) or visit
