Application of gemstones

This is the diverse on mineralogical structure group of minerals which shares on actually precious, semi-precious and ornamental gemstones.
Precious and semi precious gemstones
Minerals concern to jewels (mainly crystals), colorless or having beautiful colouring, bright shine, the greater or smaller transparency, high hardness (from 5 up to 10 on a mineralogical scale), stability to wearability, high dispersion, cleanliness of tone of colouring, uniformity of color. All of them go mainly for a facet.
Shine of jewels is defined to inherent these minerals by optical property - high factor of refraction. Shine and game of the reflected beams amplify by special facet. Appreciated optical properties are effects of opalescence and irisation, giving bright game of colours (for example, opal), asterism (light game of reflected beams as a 6-beam star, for example astrosapphire), change of color at various illumination (for example, alexandrite), polychroism (distinction in colouring at passage of light on different directions in a crystal). Hardness defines stability to wear process, ability to keep polishing, sharp corners and edges of a facet.

Gemology? Gemmology? Why study gems and become gemologist (gemmologist)? 1) Gemology or Gemmology, Jewelry or Jewellery? In American-English gemology is spelled with one “m”. In British-English it is gemmology with two "m's"! This is the same for "gemologist" and "gemmologist", "gemological" and "gemmological". That's not all. For the American-English we have jewelry, in British-English the equivalent is jewellery. For those of us interested in the field we can take it as gemmology or gemology with no problem. At AIGS we use GIA (Gemological Institute of America) standards, so except for this page you will not see "gemmology", "gemmologist", "gemmological" or "Jewellery", but to please our British English friends lets continue this page with double consonants. 2) Why study gems and become Gemmologist? In the gemstone trade, experience shows that greed and ignorance are two common reasons that can turn a gem related project into a complete failure. Becoming a gemmologist will not spare you from greed, but at least it will give you enough knowledge to avoid many traps and wrong decisions!

Natural Gemstones
A natural gemstone is a mineral, stone, or organic matter that can be cut and polished or otherwise treated for use as jewelry or other ornament. A precious gemstone has beauty, durability, and rarity, whereas a semiprecious gemstone has only one or two of these qualities. A gem is a gemstone that has been cut and polished. Diamond, corundum (ruby and sapphire), beryl (emerald and aquamarine), topaz, and opal are generally classed as precious stones. All other gemstones are usually classed as semiprecious.

A mineral is any naturally formed homogeneous inorganic material. A mineralogist is a person who studies the formation, occurrence, properties, composition, and classification of minerals. A gemologist is a person who has successfully completed recognized courses in gemology (the science and study of gemstones) and has proven skills in identifying and evaluating gem materials. A lapidary is a cutter, polisher, or engraver of precious stones.

Selected General References
A trip to your local library is the best first step toward understanding gemstones and toward planning a trip to gem and rock shops or to places where you may be able to collect gemstones. A list of Selected references on rocks, minerals, and gemstones was compiled by the USGS Geologic Inquiries Group , 907 National Center, Reston, VA 20192. The list has three sections: selected guides for rockhounds and hobbyists, general references for all ages, elementary school to adult, and periodicals.

The guides in Section I tell about equipment needed for collecting, etiquette of collecting, map reading, organizing a collection, collecting localities by States, mineral societies, mineral show dates and locations, and rock, mineral, and fossil dealers. The references below focus mainly on natural gemstones and the gems made from them rather than on synthetic gemstones, rocks, or other nongem minerals. I only use the highest quality stones. High quality stones are undyed (if possible), have no chips/fractures, and are not irradiated (to enhance color). I recommend using rounded stones for gemstone therapy. The gemstone properties listed here are for rounded, highest quality gemstones. Non-rounded gem stones may have different effects.
  • Amazonite: Improves self worth. I find that I have more confidence when I wear this stone.
  • Amber : Lift heaviness. Amber is great at lifting the heaviness of burdens allowing happiness to come through.
  • Amethyst : Spiritual Upliftment. This is also the present carrier of the purple color ray. I wear a short necklace of this when I need to communicate effectively. I place this on my stomach/liver when I have stomach problems.
  • Apatite: Communication. I wear this stone when there has been a misunderstanding. It is also helpful for fighting viruses.

Estimating Weights of Mounted Colored Gemstones

Charles I. Carmona
Updated formulas are presented for estimating the weights of mounted colored gemstones. These formulas are derived from measurements and weights of thousands of German-cut calibrated amethysts and citrines, representing most commercially available shapes and sizes. As with the formulas taught by GIA, the dimensions of a stone are multiplied by its specific gravity and by a 'shape factor' that is determined by the stone's face-up outline. This article also illustrates how the shape factor changes over a continuum of common face-up outlines. As in previous formulas, a separate weight correction factor is applied to stones that show proportion variations in profile view.

Accompanied by a description of the most interesting American gems, and ornamental and architectural materials. New York; printed by A. Hanford: 1838. First edition. The first edition of the first monograph on gemstones to be published in the United States, this work continued as the standard reference, in various editions, until George Kunz' works in the 1890s. Sinkankas notes- "The text begins with general gemology: properties, geographical distribution, enhancement of color, gem setting, cleaning of gems, imitations, commerce, and gems used in optical applications. The second part considers individual gemstones and ornamental materials... Feuchtwanger took special care to record as much information as he could on native gemstones and the localities that furnished them... Another 'first' of the present work is the extended description of pearls, artificial pearls, and corals".
All early editions of this work have become difficult to find, and Sinkankas notes this as "very rare". This copy retains its original blindstamped cloth binding. The optical characteristics and properties of gemstones often provide the fastest and best methods of identification. A certain amount of theory is necessary as optical principles determine cutting methods, gemstone attributes and the function of gem testing instruments. Light
Light and our perception of it play a crucial role in our appreciation of and identification of gemstones. Visible light however comprises only a small part of what is referred to as the electromagnetic spectrum A rough wavelength scale follows:
Note what a small portion of the spectrum comprises visible light. Light can be thought of as progressing outward in a single path (a ray). The ray forms a wave vibrating in all planes at right angles to the direction of travel, the line of the ray.
