Gemological Laboratory This Laboratory has been engaging in gemological researches, and also provides gemstone identification services. The research projects including identification of treated type IIa diamonds, the diamonds colors caused by plastic deformation with other color centers, the alexandrite effect, colors phenomena in gemstones, fluorescent color of gemstones, advanced digital imaging system for gemstones. We provide GE POL diamond identification, synthetic moissanite identification, jadeite identification, and gemstone identification. We issue gemstone identification report with necessary spectral curve, such as FTIR spectrum for jadeite identification. We include a digital image of the reported gemstone in its report. The digital image can be used as a digital "fingerprint" and saved in our Lab for future rechecking. Color Grading of Colored Diamonds We are developing a new precise color grading system for colored diamonds. This system is in the uniform CIELAB color space, and all color grades are basically uniform. A color grade terminology is associate with the system. This system is suitable for both color measurement using spectrophotometers and visual color grading with a color system, such as the Munsell color system, the Natural Color System, or the Pantone color system. Instrumentation Currently, we are developing an instrument: Fluorescence Spectrophotometer for fluorescence color measurement of diamonds. The Fluorescence Spectrophotometer consists of spectrophotometer, a standard light source, a integrating sphere, and other special parts, under a standard geometry. This instrument can measure the fluorescent spectrum of a diamond under a standard light source and a standard geometry. This spectrum is used to calculate the color of the fluorescence for color grading purpose, as well as to study the contribution of the fluorescence to the color appearance of the diamond.

  • How is the value of a diamond determined?
  • A (100%, 6 ratings) submitted by Balaji A , 94%, 16 ratings), Apr 9, 04
Carat: The unit of weight used for diamonds. There are 100 points to a carat, so a 99-point diamond weights virtually 1 carat, and 45-point diamond weights a little less than half a carat.
Color: Grading a cut stone for color means deciding the amount by which it derives from the whitest possible. Completely white (truly colorless) diamonds are rare, and therefore most valuable. Although most diamonds are a shade of white, diamonds come in all colors, including blue (Hope Diamond), apple yellow, canary yellow, pink, red, green, and even brown. Colored diamonds (called "fancies") are prized for their depth of color, just as white diamonds are valued for their lack of color.
Clarity: Nature makes each stone unique. Some contain more imperfections (called "inclusions") than others. The fewer inclusions, the more valuable the diamond. A diamond's clarity is determined by taking into account the size, nature, and placement of these imperfections. (Keep in mind that slight flaws can not be detected by the naked eye and don't affect a stone's beauty.
