The White House Web Page on James A. Garfield is a good place to start. You've probably heard about the 20 Year Jinx when it comes to the assassination of presidents. Garfield was no exception to this curse. The web page James Abram Garfield offers a brief overview of his career and assassination. The facts of the shooting on this site seem to be more consistant with the real story than other pages. For further information on the death of President Garfield, check out: Panati's Extraordinary Endings of Practically Everything and Everybody by Charles Panati (1989, Harper and Row, Publishers). Oops! by Paul Kirchner (1996, Rhino Records). If you have some spare time, go to your local library and read the newspaper articles related to this subject starting on July 3, 1881. They are quite fascinating, although typically found on microfilm.
How Alexander Graham Bell helped kill the President. James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States may have been shot by a would-be assassin, but he was actually killed by his great team of doctors. Don't try to figure out what Garfield did as President that was so memorable - there was very little. In fact, most Americans barely recognize his name.

, twentieth president of the United States. The once bright image of Garfield has dimmed with time so that now he seems merely another figure in that gray procession of bearded politicos that novelist Thomas Wolfe called "the lost Americans." This obscurity is compounded by the brevity of his administration—only two hundred days from his inauguration to his death at the hands of Charles J. Guiteau, an unhinged religious fanatic ( not the "disappointed office seeker" of the familiar catchphrase). Yet to Garfield's contemporaries his sudden loss seemed a tragedy unmatched since the Civil War and they responded with an extravagant outburst of public mourning. In so doing, they were commemorating not only the president but the man, whose life seemed to embody nineteenth-century American values. Born in a log cabin on the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio, he was the last president to be blessed with that politically potent symbol of humble origins. Reared in rural poverty, he escaped by means of religion and education, becoming a minister in the Disciples of Christ church, the president of what would become Hiram College, and then a lawyer. When the Civil War broke out, he became the youngest major general in the Union army and then resigned his commission in midwar for a seat in the U.S. Congress. Touching as it did the familiar chords of Home, School, Church, Flag, and Country, his career encapsulated and even justified the most cherished values of his day. Horatio Alger himself was moved to write one of Garfield's campaign biographies.

Print Preview of Section Garfield, James Abram (1831-1881), 20th president of the United States (1881). He held the office of president only four months before he was fatally shot by an assassin. He had served in the House of Representatives of the Congress of the United States for 17 years and had established a distinguished record there. He was only lightly touched by the corruption in government that marked the period after the Civil War ended in 1865. Garfield's assassination by a disappointed office seeker gave new impetus to demands for reform of the federal employment system, called the

When he was shot and rendered unconscious soon after taking office, serious constitutional questions arose concerning who should properly perform the functions of the presidency. Garfield's father died in 1833, leaving the family in poverty. His mother continued to run the family's small farm and to see that her children went to the neighbourhood school. Garfield attended Western Reserve Eclectic Institute at Hiram, Ohio, and was graduated from Williams College (1856). He then returned to the academy in Ohio as a teacher and later as principal. An advocate of free-soil principles, Garfield soon became a supporter of the newly organized Republican Party, and in 1859 he was elected to the Ohio legislature. During the American Civil War he helped recruit the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and became its colonel. He fought at Shiloh (April 1862), served as chief of staff in the Army of the Cumberland, saw action at Chickamauga (September 1863), and emerged as a major general of volunteers. In 1862 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served until 1880. As chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, he became an expert on fiscal matters, advocated a high protective tariff, and, as a

The "rating" in the following chart is from various polls of historians' views of U.S. Presidents that were conducted at various times. The details about these polls are shown at the bottom of this webpage. These polls were not related, so their ratings may not correlate completely with each other. However, there seems to be a general consensus among all the polls. For example, Abraham Lincoln is always rated #1, the greatest of all U.S. Presidents, and Warren G. Bush Has Threatened to Use the Veto 40 Times, but Never HasWhat's Up?
      By Nicolas Heidorn
Mr. Heidorn is a public policy intern at the Independent Institute in Oakland, California. In a matter of months, George Walker Bush, 43rd President of the United States, could go down in history as the first full-term president in 175 years not to have exercised his constitutional veto power. In fact, only seven presidents in U.S. history have not used the veto. The last was James Garfield, sworn in March 4, 1881, who served less than a year in office before being assassinated by a disgruntled lawyer. In all, four of the seven veto-free presidents, Garfield, William Harrison, Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore, did not complete an entire term. And, the very last president to serve a full term without using a veto was John Quincy Adams, the sixth president. gigantic 28.8 percent increase in federal spending

    November 2001
Interesting Fact: James Garfield was the second president shot in office. Doctors tried to find the bullet with a metal detector invented by Alexander Graham Bell. But the device failed because Garfield was placed on a bed with metal springs, and no one thought to move him. He died on September 19, 1881. Fast Fact: James A. Garfield died from an assassin's bullet only six months after he took office. Biography: As the last of the log cabin Presidents, James A. Garfield attacked political corruption and won back for the Presidency a measure of prestige it had lost during the Reconstruction period. He was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. Fatherless at two, he later drove canal boat teams, somehow earning enough money for an education. He was graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1856, and he returned to the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (later Hiram College) in Ohio as a classics professor. Within a year he was made its president.
Garfield was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1859 as a Republican. During the secession crisis, he advocated coercing the seceding states back into the Union.
