Book Review:
The Mathematical Universe
by William Dunham,
President James A. Garfield
and the Pythagorean Theorem
The newly published book by William Dunham entitled The Mathematical Universe, contains
an intriguing story about U.S. President James A. Garfield the same Garfield who was assassinated in 1881 by networks, according to historian Anton Chaitkin, that were controlled by the British Monarchy. President Garfield, Dunham reveals, was the author of a unique proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. This, obviously, was back in the days when U.S. political leaders still admired a classical education. How far are we now from the oratory of an Abraham Lincoln, or from the inspired crusade for classical education in free, public schools by a Thaddeus Stevens! And how unusual for a U.S. President and Congressman to be involved in geometrical constructions! But perhaps this story further fills in the picture of why such a political leadership was considered a threat to the British aristocracy who had just seen their support for the Confederacy go up in flames.

W ASHINGTON, DC Guiteau was crazed, but that courtroom utterance was rational and accurate. His death included all of the worst elements that could be found in a presidential medical crisis: "Garfield's death," states the 1987 book Medical Cover-Ups in the White House, "included all of the worst elements that could be found in a presidential medical crisis: faulty diagnosis, grossly improper treatment, prideful bickering among doctors and a massive cover-up of the truth before and after death." "In short, Garfield never had a chance." The second president to be assassinated, once a professor of Greek and Latin, Garfield served a brief term of office: only two hundred days. On July 2, 1881, he arrived at the Washington railroad depot to depart for a reunion at his alma mater, Williams College in Massachusetts, where he had also taught and served as its president.
The wounded president exclaimed, "My God, what is this?" and collapsed to the floor. Garfield remained fully conscious, though in traumatic shock. His pulse alternately raced and grew feeble, and his breathing became shallow. He was rushed to the White House, where doctors discovered that one bullet had grazed his arm but the other had lodged internally. Though the president complained of numbness of the legs and feet, which would suggest damage to the spinal cord, several of the physicians believed the troubling bullet rested in the abdomen. As the doctors argued over the bullet's location and what to do about it, Garfield lingered for eighty days, conducting state business from his bed. But the lodged bullet was rapidly poisoning his blood. Within a month the once robust, 210-pound president was down to an emaciated 130 pounds, with new infections throughout his lungs. With Washington's summer heat soaring to almost a hundred degrees, Garfield was kept relatively comfortable by a primitive "air cooling" system: rows of cotton towels dampened by ice water that was evaporated by fans. The blood poisoning and related infections finally claimed his life on September 19.

"ague" For six weeks when he was 15, Garfield drove horses along the narrow towpaths running beside the Ohio canal network. After falling into the water for literally the 14th time, Garfield developed fever, chills, exhaustion, and became bedridden for weeks. This illness was diagnosed as an "ague," which was then a term applied generically to any malaria-like illness. He was treated with large doses of calomel, a chloride of mercury with cathartic properties. At that time it was the standard treatment for any fever. [
bad cold Garfield had a bad cold in 1851 that was treated by a homeopathic practitioner, Alpheus Morrill, with "cold cloths applied to the chest and infinitesimal doses of medicine." [
anal fissure Garfield developed a painful anal fissure in 1875 that kept him in bed for several weeks. Ultimately, John Shaw Billings (later the Surgeon General of the US Army, and the architect of the Johns Hopkins Hospital) operated on him. [

    President James Garfield's Vertebrae

On the morning of July 2, 1881, Charles Guiteau fired two shots at President James Garfield as he entered a Washington, DC train station. One shot grazed Garfield's hand. The second entered the President's spine near the right 11th rib but did not exit.
    (NCP 1863)
The x-ray, which would easily have pinpointed the bullet's location, had not yet been discovered. So the President's physicians did what all competent physicians had routinely done in such cases. They probed the entry wound with special instruments designed for that purpose - but without success. The bullet remained lost inside the President. Medical historians believe Garfield could have survived his injury if the attending physicians had washed their hands and used sterile instruments. In 1881, though, such antisepsis techniques were still under debate within the American medical profession.
(AFIP 71787) President Garfield died on September 19 of complications from his injuries. Army Medical Museum pathologists removed these vertebrae (the 12th thoracic and 1st and 2nd lumbar) at autopsy to document the wound and resulting infection. The plastic probe shows the path of the bullet.

United Church of Christ Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even just one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.
