Touring the beautiful gardens of the South
As winter ends, a chance to find new inspiration for the garden
It's winter. Gardens are always planned and mulled over in the winter. That's the only time a gardener is free from outdoor chores, the only time muscles don't ache, the only time instruments of torture have been left to hang from their pegs in the garage. The work load is light. Life is good. After the spring catalogs have been studied, reach for what the British used to call an "improving book." The wind may be howling outside, and the garden may be covered in snow, but, right now, the fireside's warm. The atmosphere's cozy. And, there won't be a better time to prepare for the spring thawit's time to catch up on your reading.

Trimming trees, planting a water garden
By John Arbogast ROANOKE.COM COLUMNIST Q: The lower branches of our Bradford pear trees are injuring the person who mows our lawn by hanging down in his way. We would like to trim some of the lower branches to provide more headroom. Is there a best time of the year to do this or can I go ahead and do it now? A: Removing a few lower limbs from trees can generally be done at any time of year. But don't cut limbs larger than 3 inches in diameter that connect to the main trunk. This is based on most trees’s inability to naturally prevent decay from starting at the location of a large cut. Pruning paints and sealers don’t provide much protection.

This summer has been hot one! Not only that, it's been dryer than normal. Those two factors combined have been hard on our gardens. We've prayed for rain, but you know the old saying... "Be careful what you pray for - you might just get it". We didn't need Hurricane Katrina! We live almost four hundred miles from the Gulf of Mexico, yet we still felt Katrina's wrath. We only got four inches of rain. Those south of us were not so lucky. May I be so bold as to suggest that money that would in ordinary years go into new plantings might be better spent on relief efforts. Please dig deep into your pockets rather than into your soil and donate to a reputable agency such as RedCross.org or The Salvation Army September is the second most important month of the year for tending lawns, especialy fescue grass. Inspect your lawns for weeds, insects, and diseases. Fertilize fescue lawns with a high-nitrogen, slow release fertilizer, then water with at least a half-inch of water. If your fescue lawn is thin, you probably need to reseed, so if you plan to, don't use a fertilizer with a pre-emergence weed control added, or the grass seed will not germinate. Did you know that September 22 nd is the first day of autumn and is known as the autumnal equinox? Here in the South, it may not feel much like autumn with daytime temperatures in the upper 80's and low 90's, but astronomically, that is one of two days each year that day and night lengths are equal on all parts of the earth. The other occurrence is the vernal equinox which occurs March 21.
