How to Select Basic Garden Tools
You don't need to spend a lot to start a garden, but you do need some basic tools. You can get started for under $100 - less if you can find tools at yard sales or flea markets. Steps: Select a spading fork as your first tool. Before you plant anything, you will need to open and improve the soil. A spading fork looks like a pitchfork but has a shorter handle and wider tines. It is used to dig down into hard soil and break up the ground. Next, choose a hoe. A hoe is useful for weeding and cultivating the surface of the soil to allow for penetration of nutrients and water. Choose a watering can. Long nozzles allow the water to come out at a very gentle flow rate and are useful for reaching across long distances. Select a watering can that has a detachable spray head - this type of watering can is perfect for watering young seedlings. Select a round-ended shovel for larger digging projects, such as planting shrubs and trees.

Next Want some Free Stuff? - Click Here - Tomato Growing Information for "Succession Intensive Square Foot Gardening" The purpose of this page is to explain my planting practices for container growing. I call it "Succession Intensive Square Foot Gardening" It means planting as much as you can in the smallest of plots. Learn to feed a family from the smallest of gardens. Plants are grown in compost rich soil Plus other amendments and fertilizers. You can use other soils also, which are explained below
But the part of growing tomatoes I like the best is that you can grow other plants with the tomatoes.
Some examples are: onion, carrots, beans, parsley and kale to name a few. Succession:
Planting one after another with the timing being imporant. You can harvest the plants and then add a new crop for the fall. Intensive:
Planting types of plants that have compatably rooting systems. By that I mean if your main crop is tomatoes and you plant them deep you can also plant green onions which have a shallow root system and are harvested right at the time the tomatoes begin to flower. This is when the tomatoes need an extra boost of fertilizer to feed the new fruit and the onions won't be there to suck any of it up..

187. Coastal Gardening
Features photos of the author's garden and excellent editorials covering types of plants ideal for coastal gardening.

WELCOME TO MY SEASIDE GARDEN 33 Peerley road is a coastal garden in sleepy sussex . Nestling between the Isle of Wight and the south downs . It is 7 miles outside chichester in the heart of sea side suburbia . The local towns of the Witterings have been so named by the romans wittering meaning windy . It is no word of a lie, Wittering is very windy ! constantly battered by salty gales, the Downs and the Isle of Wight acting as the perfect wind tunnel . Because it lies below sea level the salt in the air is very prominent and Gardening here is to say the least very difficult . I moved here some 16 years ago and always having had a garden soon set about trying to create my own utopia , I failed miserably, any literature written on coastal garden had no relevance to my situation . Instead of the sunny sandy places most garden writers hail as the classical coastal garden ,I found my self on heavy clay on a north facing plot . I despaired and almost gave up it was proving far too expensive watching the salt chew up my plants or the heavy retentive clay drown the supposedly saline resistant plants drown in my north facing quagmire . However I am a stubborn creature and when faced with an illness that left me bed ridden for some time, I set about exploring the problems of coastal gardening . From seed and cuttings I experimented on the resistance of plants to my conditions I observed how other plants in different coastal sites adapted ,after all ,not only are there sandy soils but chalk , clay ,greensand , and granite to contend with on our coastline . I will always find it strange that with some 3 million of us gardening by the sea so little is written .! I aim to change all that ,I tire of the cliched grasses and Derek Jarman style of garden ,when so much more can be achieved ,explored and celebrated . After all the frost free climate of coastal gardening gives us licence to explore uncharted territory

  • Harvest Pumpkin and Squash before the first frost. Replant bulbs that were lifted in the spring. Dispose of soft or shrivelled bulbs. Put cloches over late autumn lettuce seedlings. Once herbaceous perennials have finished flowering and die back, remove and clean plant supports. Apply manure and dig over heavy soil in the Autumn. Don't worry about breaking down large lumps of soil as the Winter frost should break these down. Continue to water and dead-head hanging baskets, pots and planters, but reduce feeding. Reduce the frequency of grass cutting and increase the height of the cut.
