Back to the Main News Page DECLARATION OF EMERGENCY BY GOVERNMENT OF AN IMMINENT LOCUST INVASION IN THE GAMBIA 29TH JULY, 2004 The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations alerted The Gambia Government, to prepare for a possible Locust invasion. The FAO expressed concern over the upsurging Desert Locust populations particularly in Northwest Africa, despite intensive ground and aerial interventions. Given the known consequences of a locust invasion on agriculture, in general, and food security in particular, the Department of State for Agriculture immediately issued a Press Release to inform the general public and the farming community of the situation and to request them to inform the Department of any sightings of the locust. The Department also conducted an extensive survey to determine the presence of locusts and to sensitize the farming communities on how to spot and report on locusts. The Department further developed a contingency plan of action, for dealing with a possible locust invasion, and submitted proposals for locust emergency assistance to donors, to enable the Gambia prepare for the imminent threat of a locust invasion.

CLIMATE: Gambia has a tropical climate with a hot wet season between June to October alternating with a cool dry season from November to April. During the dry season the Harmattan, a dry and dust laden wind blows from the Sahara Desert in the northeast. Average annual precipitation in Banjul is 1,295 mm (51 inches) and average temperature ranges are from 15 to 31 degrees Celsius (59 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit) in January to 23 to 32 degrees Celsius (73 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit) in June. No progress has been made into the investigation of his murder and the suspicion that he was killed by government agents is gaining ground. Mr Hydara's son is now appealing "for justice to be done" on broadcasters all over Africa. Baba Hydara, the son of the famous editor, together with the Paris-based press freedom group Reporters sans Frontières (RSF) today launched an Africa-wide campaign to press for real investigations into the murder case. Gambia Gambia History and Government History: The River Gambia was known to the Carthaginians in the fifth century BC, and subsequently the area became part of several successive African empires. For a time, it was part of the Ghana empire (centred in modern-day Mauritania) and then the Songhais who brought Islam to the region. Then, in the 13th century, the river basin came under the control of Mandingo and Susu people based in what is now Mali. Mandingo influence waned with the decline of the Mali empire at the end of the 16th century, just as the first contacts with the British were taking place at the mouth of the River Gambia. A variety of rival African powers, including the Fula from northern Nigeria, followed by the Marabouts and the Soninkas, vied for influence during much of the next 200 years. During the colonial period, several European powers contested for ownership of the river and the rich trade which it carried. Britain eventually gained control of the mouth and lower reaches of the river, thereby establishing an enclave in the surrounding French territories of Senegal and a useful base from which to launch attacks on French trading settlements. The Gambia was Britain’s first and last colony, being officially colonised in 1765 (although until 1843 it was united with Sierra Leone) and gaining independence 200 years later in February 1965.
