Introduction
... Transnational Issue Introduction Gambia, The Background: The Gambia gained its independence from the UK in 1965; it formed a short-lived federation of Senegambia with Senegal between 1982 and 1989. In 1991 the two nations signed a friendship and cooperation treaty. A military coup in 1994 overthrew the president and banned political activity, but a 1996 constitution and presidential elections, followed by parliamentary balloting in 1997, completed a nominal return to civilian rule. The country undertook another round of presidential and legislative elections in late 2001 and early 2002. The Geography
The Republic of the Gambia is a located on the Atlantic coast of Africa, between latitudes 13 o N and 14 o N and Longitude 14 o W and 17 o W. Occupying a total area of 11420 sq km, the Gambia consists of two narrow strips of land 6 to 26 km wide extending 320 km east along the banks of the River Gambia. The Republic of Senegal is the Gambia’s only neighbor. Occupying an area 20 times the size of the Gambia, Senegal surrounds the Gambia on north, east and south. Until late 19 th Century there was no Gambia or Senegal and present day Senegambia was settled by a number of West African Kingdoms. The Gambia and Senegal went their separate ways as British and French colonies in late 19 th century. Shortly before Gambia’s independence in 1965, the idea to re-unify Gambia and Senegal was floated around for fear of Gambia not being a viable state. This was quickly dropped for lack of support on both sides. After independence, the Gambia became a member of several regional and global organizations including United Nations in 1965 and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS in 1973. The Land
The Gambia River is the country's dominant feature, flowing across a plateau of Miocene-Pliocene sandstone, compacted sediment composed predominantly of quartz grains formed from 23.7 to 1.6 million years ago. In the east, narrow valleys are separated by broad interfluves or flattish hills. In the west, lower and smaller sand hills alternate with depressions filled in with sand so that a flat plain is formed.
    Gambia River
The Gambia River in western Africa, 700 miles (1,120 km) long, rising in the Republic of Guinea and flowing westward through The Gambia into the Atlantic Ocean. Its major tributaries are the Sandougou and the Sofianiama. The Gambia is one of the finest waterways in Africa and the only western African river that is easily accessible to oceangoing shipping. It constitutes a unifying factor for the independent state of The Gambia, which consists of a narrow strip of land along both banks of the river. The political separation between The Gambia and Senegal (formally ended in 1982 by the confederation of the two countries) has, however, long hindered the development of the resources of the river and its basin. A first step had been taken four years earlier, however, with the establishment of the Gambia River Development Organization, initially composed of the same two countries (joined in 1980 by Guinea). From its source in the highlands of the Fouta Djallon, the Gambia follows a winding course to its mouth, which is a ria, or drowned estuary. The dividing and reuniting of river channelsa phenomenon known as braidinghas created several islands along the river's middle course, of which the two largest are Elephant Island and MacCarthy Island. The river is joined by numerous creeks called bolons, the largest of these being Bintang Bolon, which flows into it from the south. The width of the river's valley varies considerably along its course. The river valley is cut into a plateau of sandstone dating from the Tertiary period (66.4 million to 1.6 million years ago).
