This is a long page, please use the scroll bar on right as needed. Best viewed at a resolution of 1024x768 Here we will explain as much as possible about our holidays in The Gambia, the smiling coast of west Africa. We offer you an alternative to the usual hotel or 'luxury safari' rip-offs. We are first and foremost about 'reality' and are not stuffy, nor pretentious. We believe in giving you real value for money and a genuine experience of this country, it's culture and it's wonderful people.
Unlike the hotels, we do not try to pass off on you any psuedo culture. We always give you the real thing. We offer you the opportunity to live in a normal house, much like any others in the area. Living in with the local community, amongst the people, you will not be divorced from them, as you would be enclosed in an hotel, that could be anywhere on the planet. But you still have a very secure and safe environment.
The Gambians still live in the extended family and call their home a kunda or compound. Our neighbours the

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, The Beautiful
Women in The Gambia (2005)
What can I say? I love this little country. From the moment you step off the airplane and enter into its flat abyss, you delve into a riddim that is constantly pulsing on its own. Strip away all the things you hear about Africa, all of the sadness, all of the poverty, all of the environmental and social hazards, and you will find a magical place, surviving it all. The Good On this trip, I have to say, the women were my most interesting study. The women of Gambia made this trip a most delightful and intriguing sojourn. Gambia is all about the women. She is the bread winner, the land owner, the cook, the maid, the Vice President, the business owner, the farmer, the mother, and sometimes the father, the organizershe is all. I have to say without the women, I don’t see how this little country would survive. There isn’t one role that the women of Gambia do not play. She should be President! But that will be left up to the Gambian people to decide one of these days-and I hope very soon. While it is well noted to mention their Vice President is a woman, the Hon. Isatou Njie-Saidy. A woman that holds a great seat of prestige and power, the

For those who love to interact with people and gain a better understanding of the world when they travel, the Bicycle Africa offers several cross-cultural programs in West Africa each year: "Sahel Journey" (in the interior) and "West Africa People-to-People" (on the coast). Each two-week itinerary is unique. Consecutive programs are easily combined for a more extensive trip ( full schedule All of West Africa is very rich in cultural and history. We select from the best. Participants have the opportunity to stay in rural villages, learn about daytoday life, meet artisans, health care personnel, educators and government officials and visit historic and cultural sites. Those who continue on to the coast can celebrate by relaxing on the beach. Highlights of the Mali program are visits to Mopti and Djenne, the fascinating enclave of the Dogon people, with its many sacred sites and a truly extraordinary riverboat trip on the Niger River. A few of the special features of the programs in the coastal countries are the variety of ethnic groups, visits to museums and markets, historic sites, traditional shrines and countless warm and welcoming rural villages.

"A DOORWAY TO AFRICA" The Gambia One of the smallest countries in Africa, situated on its western most tip, The Gambia has become "a doorway to Africa" - for many people seeking to experience African culture that has been passed down from generation to generation by geriots, masters of history, narration and music. Culture The Gambia is one of the most concentrated multi cultural countries in Africa. http://www.statehouse.gm/tourism1.htm
Tourism in The Gambia "The Smiling Coast" Every year, thousands of international visitors come to The Gambia, drawn by its beaches, birds, sunshine, and the country's biggest asset: the Gambian people, whose hospitality and friendliness have made it "The Smiling Coast." Tourism has become the fastest-growing sector of the economy, contributing 12% of the country's GDP and providing employment for over 100,000 Gambians. More and more visitors are returning year after year. A BIT OF HISTORY GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE The Gambia is 180 miles long, but only 21 miles wide, and follows the course of the River Gambia as it meanders west through mangrove swamps, bamboo forests, and salt flats, to the capital city Banjul, which is located along the 30-mile stretch of Atlantic coast. The Gambia lies at the southern edge of the Sahel and is made up of mostly savannah and open woodland vegetation. The raining season is short, from July to September, with most of the precipitation falling at night. The climate is dry and warm from December through February, the peak of the tourist season.
