Futurism in Italy: Anarchy in Art. Written By: Jamie Sue Austin Futurism can be attributed as the first far reaching modern movement dedicated to rearranging cultural values around technology and the machine ethic. Though the actual art contributed by Futurism is no longer integrated into our society, the principles of Futurism can be seen in movies, music, theatre, and daily customs. With our increasing reliance on technology to feed, cloth, remind, and prolong us we are unwittingly living the Futurist dream. Our acceptance of technology as a necessary and vital part of every day life can be contributed to the manifestos of the Italian Futurists, and without them our tolerance for relying on machines to carry out our basic social needs, like communication and commerce would never had been developed. Expanding computer technologies like the Internet and Ecommerce are the result of the Futuristic belief that society needs machines to fulfill its inherent potential. < Italian Art

Russian Cubo-Futurism
Vladimir Mayakovsky, from 'Mayakovsky A Tragedy' (1914)
The first use of the word futurism by a Russian art movement, was by a group known as the (Ego-Futurists) in 1911. Most of the individuals involved in this group were only 'half-baked' aestheticists. A far more radical literary movement in Russia at this time were the Hylaens . However, in the beginning they did not consider themselves to be futurists at all. It was only after the decline of the Ego-Futurist group around 1913, that the Hylaens started to examine a set of ideas that were a synthesis of Italian Futurism and French Cubism. The Hylaens were originally organized by a graphic artist by the name of David Burliuk (1882-1967), who was their F. T. Marinetti. Among the members of this group was Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922), Alexei Kruchenykh (1886-1970), and the well-known 'Poet of the Revolution,' Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930). Eventually the Hylaens became known as Russia's only futurist group at the expense of several other Russian avant-garde cliques who had also existed at the same time. Perhaps the greatest 20th century experimental poet of Russia, as well as the rest of the world, was Velimir Khlebnikov

Away! Let us break out since we cannot much longer restrain our desire to create finally a new musical reality, with a generous distribution of resonant slaps in the face, discarding violins, pianos, double basses and plaintive organs. Let us break out! Luigi Russolo
In 1917, four years after the appearance of Luigi Russolo's Futurist manifesto "The Art of Noises," and eight years after F. T. Marinetti's founding manifesto, the ultra-conservative German composer Hans Pfitzner published a passionate, polemical essay entitled Futuristengefahr (Danger of Futurists), directed not at the Italian Futurists but at the recently published second edition of Ferruccio Busoni's Sketch for a New Aesthetic of Music Pfitzner, deeply disturbed by the eminent composer's vision of a freer music to come that would finally realize the art's fullbut as yet unattainedpotential, took it as an unwarranted attack on the glorious achievements of music's past, with only vague and uncertain proposals for its future offered in return. Shortly afterwards, in a brief reply, Busoni remarked that Pfitzner's title alone led the reader astray, "heaping on my name...all the weaknesses and faults with which you could possibly reproach a certain group of peoplea group from which I am far removed. The word 'Futurism' is not used on any page of my little book. I have never attached myself to a sectFuturism, a movement of the present time, could have no connection with my arguments."

Discussions of Futurist music have been incorrect and misleading because after the period, musicians and critics have known only a concept of the music, which has been modified by subsequent theorizing and interpretation. Everything that does not fit into the theories has been regarded with suspicion, considered not to be music, and "relegated'' to the domain of the visual arts or theater. History needs to be reevaluated in terms of avant-garde movements such as Futurism so that those attempts that have opened the path to later artistic activity may be distinguishable from those which have fallen back on themselves, and have therefore failed to connect with the evolution of artistic thought. Early in the 20th century the Italian musical world was characterized by the persistence of the late Romantic tradition, The curtain had already come down many times on Parsifal and on "program music'' but the "season" continued (with inferior imitations). During this time one figure stands out as the initiator of a new musical concept (one that can be located at the root of Futurism and other avant-garde movernents) Ferruccio Busoni, who was also one of the greatest pianists of his time. Seeds of all the ideas that were later enthusiastically expressed by the Futurists Balilla Pratella and Luigi Russolo can be found in Busoni's essay, Entwurf einer neuen Astetik der Tonkunst (Sketch of a New Esthetic of the Art of Sound), 1907, published in Trieste by Schmidl.

Futurist Manifesto
I talian Futurism Italian Futurism was initially a literary movement created by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in 1909 with the manifesto Le Futurisme . The intentions of this manifesto was a wake-up call to Marinetti's countrymen to make them aware that they had been 'wearing second-hand clothes for too long.' It was time for them to create a new art for themselves, forged out of the beauty of speed and a glorification of war: Art, in fact, can be nothing but violence, cruelty, and injustice. That the manifesto was first written in French and published in the Parisian newspaper Le Figaro before any of the new Futurist art existed, typified Marinetti's understanding of the power of the media to work for him and disseminate his ideas.
Marinetti along with the artists that he gathered around him, wrote manifestos not only on literature, music, dance, performance, painting, architecture, etc. but also on almost all aspects touching everyday life, such as clothing, food

Historical Note
Futurism, a twentieth-century movement founded by the Italian writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti (1876-1944), embraced literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, and music. The Futurist movement was known for its manifestos which provided practical information about the implementation of futurist principles. The first Futurist Manifesto was written by Marinetti and published in Le Figaro in 1909. Marinetti called for a new art form that would reflect contemporary living conditions and break with the aesthetic traditions of the nineteenth century. Futurist artists attempted to apply Marinetti's principles by glorifying speed and movement in their works. In 1939, writers Luigi Scrivo and P. Bellanova began compiling notes, clippings, and drafts of chapters for a proposed definitive history of the Futurist Movement. The proposed book, entitled "Volgarizzazione del Futurismo," was never completed. Some of the material collected by Scrivo and Bellanova appears in a similar work, "Sintesi del Futurismo: Storia E Documenti," published by Scrivo in 1968.

The economy need not shut down just because people must avoid congregating. Plans should be made, even at companies that prefer not to allow telecommuting, to be able to switch to it in an emergency. Schools might have to close but education need not stop. We can easily devote TV channels in each area to basic curriculum for each grade. Individual schools can modify that for students who have internet access or even just a DVD player or VCR. For example, teachers could teach their class to a camera, and computers can quickly burn DVDs for distribution. Students can watch the DVDs, pause them and phone questions to the teacher. (However, ideally most students are able to make use of the live lectures on TV, and can phone their particular teacher, or chat online, to ask questions.) Parents, stuck at home would also help their children more. Delivery people (USPS, UPS etc.) would be high in line for vaccination to keep goods flowing to people in their homes. You can of course buy almost anything online already. Systems like Webvan, for efficient grocery ordering and delivery could be brought back up, with extra vaccinated delivery drivers making rounds of every street.

What Is Futurism?
The 20th century brought many diverse changes to classical music, with developments in electronics, percussion, and orchestration, not to mention the demise of the tonal system in the work of many composers. An acceptance of folk musicnotably jazz, ethnic, and popled to extremely varied and creative movements, and these in turn cross-pollinated with innovative avant-garde techniques. Electronic manipulation, minimalist movements, complex rhythms and atonalities, and postmodern techniques all have contributed to, and continue to further, experimentations in the modern world of classical music. Futurism was a twentieth century Italian and Russian avant-garde movement in literature and arts. It promoted extreme artistic innovation and experimentation, declaring a radical disassociation from the past and a focus on new art, technology, and politics, commonly manifested through primitivism. The Futurists strongly rejected the self-awareness behind the overextended lyricism of symbolism—the dominant school of the time. In contrast, it showed a preference for the visual arts that discussed conservative social elements and challenged them in order to provoke a violent negative response. Italian Futurism began with a manifesto by F. T. Marinetti (1876-1944) titled "Fondazione e Manifesto del Futurismo" (The Founding and Manifesto of Futurism), which declared that artistic work without an aggressive element could not be considered a masterpiece. He enunciated the principles of Futurism in relation to poetry in "Parole in Libertà" (Words in Freedom), demanding a language free of syntax and logical ordering that allowed the poet to rapidly convey intense emotion. In "Immaginazione Senza Fili" (Wireless Imagination) and "Analogia Disegnata" (Pictorialized Analogy), he discussed the maximum freedom of imagery and metaphor, which led to expressive use of typography—a varying of font sizes and styles within a word or on the same line and free disposition of words on the printed page. Important Italian Futurists poets besides Marinetti were E. Cavacchioli, L. Folgore, and A. Palazzeschi.
