Russian Futurism
Vladimir Mayakovsky, from 'Mayakovsky A Tragedy' (1914)
The first use of the word futurism by a Russian art movement, was by a group known as the (Ego-Futurists) in 1911. Most of the individuals involved in this group were only 'half-baked' aestheticisms. A far more radical literary movement in Russia at this time were the Hylaens . However, in the beginning they did not consider themselves to be futurists at all. It was only after the decline of the Ego-Futurist group around 1913, that the Hylaens started to examine a set of ideas that were a synthesis of Italian Futurism and French Cubism. The Hylaens were originally organized by a graphic artist by the name of David Burliuk (1882-1967), who was their F. T. Marinetti. Among the members of this group was Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922), Alexei Kruchenykh (1886-1970), and the well-known 'Poet of the Revolution,' Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930). Eventually the Hylaens became known as Russia's only futurist group at the expense of several other Russian avant-garde cliques who had also existed at the same time. Perhaps the greatest 20th century experimental poet of Russia, as well as the rest of the world, was Velimir Khlebnikov

Futurism (1909-1944) was perhaps the first movement in the history of art to be engineered and managed like a business. Since its beginning, Futurism was very close to the world of advertising and, like a business, promoted its product to a wide audience. For this reason, Futurism introduced the use of the manifesto as a public means to advertise its artistic philosophy, and also as a polemic weapon against the academic and conservative world. The poet F.T. Marinetti, founder of the movement, wrote in his first manifesto of February 1909, "Up to now, literature has exalted a pensive immobility, ecstasy, and sleep. We intend to exalt aggressive action, a feverish insomnia, the racer's stride, the mortal leap, the punch and the slap. We affirm that the world's magnificence has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of speed. . . We will destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind, will fight moralism, feminism, every opportunistic or utilitarian cowardice." Futurism, as opposed to Cubism, an essentially visual movement, found its roots in poetry and in a whole renovation of language, and featured the concept of the New Typography. Since 1905, Marinetti had promoted from the pages of his magazine

FUTURISM:
Dynamism as the Expression of the Modern World
by Joshua C. Taylor
On February 20, 1909, the energetic bilingual poet and editor, F. T. Marinetti, publisher of the controversial literary magazine Poesia (Milan), announced the movement of Futurism in a belligerent manifesto published on the front page of the Paris newspaper Le Figaro . The term Futurism caught the imagination of writers and artists throughout the world, as did Marmetti's insistence that the artist turn his back on past art and conventional procedures to concern himself with the vital, noisy life of the burgeoning industrial city. In Italy a group of painters gathered with the poets around Marinetti in 1909 to work out the implications of his manifesto for the visual arts. They published first a general manifesto, "The Manifestos of Futurist Painters," in February 1910, then, in March, the more specific "Futurist Painting: Technical Manifesto." It was not until much later in the year, however, that the painting of the three most notable of the first signers, Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916), and Luigi Russolo (1885-1947), showed revolutionary formal changes consistent with the procedures set forth in the Technical Manifesto. Originally the manifestoes were subscribed to also by Aroldo Bonzagni and Romolo Romani, but they soon dropped out, and

THE CHALLENGE OF FUTURISM
FUTURISM was one of the longest lived and broadest encompassing artistic movements of the 20th century, although it tends to be denied the importance it deserves because of its political associations. Many of the early Futurists were anarchists, the movement was welcomed by Gramsci and emulated amongst the Bolsheviks, but it was the association of Futurismo with Fascismo that has left it somewhat tainted amongst progressives. This is ironic in that Futurism was the quintessenence of 20th century modernism and paralleled 'the cult of the new' exemplified in Lenin's dictum "socialism + electricity = communism". Although Mussolini's regime utilised modernist traits, it was more at home with the neo-classicism of Novecento Although mainly associated with the visual arts, Futurism began in 1909 with the proclamation of a manifesto by the Italian poet, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti (1876-1944). The manifesto not only celebrated the dynamism of the machine age but strongly negated the past: "We will destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind..."

ROBERT SCHAAD
ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
In an effort to be more abstract, and encourage viewer interpretation, I am purposely vague in what I convey. Often, if I have painted a shape and it strongly suggests one specific form or idea, I'll rework it. I affectionately acknowledge various influences (musical, technological and artistic) while maintaining my own vision. On the surface my work may appear whimsical (cartoony, blurry), but underneath the tone is unsettling. Look deeper."

Burning Man 2005
I'm finally back from Burning Man. Wow! Best burn ever! Sorry it took so long to get this up. I've been crazy busy since the burn, full of creative, life changing energy. I can't even begin to tell you all of it. But for now, here's some of the highlights. Burning Man has become the Mecca of the New Aeon. There is nothing anywhere in history that comes close. Each year tens of thousands of people come to the Playa and its vast expanse and express themselves with total freedom and complete community support. You can't help but become an embodiment of your true higher self. There is tremendous healing and transformation that takes while there, and I believe it has become a crucial event in our time. The sense of community and connection becomes so deep that it changes your perspective on just about everything... so much at times you can forget your old life entirely. I will NEVER be the same after this year's burn. I came onto the Playa with so much anticipation I could barely contain myself. We hit the ground running less than an hour after arriving, heading to Ashram Galactica to attend a reception of my friends Jessica and Jason who got married earlier this year. I ran into all the old gang from last year. Even had a chance encounter with Lelu from Fifth Element. Afterwards, we headed down 4:30 to the playa. When it came into view I ran with all my might towards it - embracing the spectacle that was before me. The first thing I saw was a very large neon psychedelic flower - a crane of immense proportions with people partying while driving it around, and on the flower itself. I was overtaken with the beauty of all that was before me - the celebration of life and liberation - I fell to my knees an emotional wreck from the life I've left behind and wept tears of joy, relief and redemption to finally be home. Utopia is here.

40. Future Hi: Conversation: Politics & Psychedelic Futurism
So I ask you this, what is the future of Psychedelic futurism? Psychedelic futurism is a roadmap for change, for charting the unknown.

This is a call for conversation. I’ve tried very hard to stay away from politics with this blog, but now it’s become impossible for me. This morning on my way to work, I heard on the radio the ruling that journalist’s freedom to protect their sources is in serious jeopardy . Such a freedom is the bedrock of a free press. If journalist can’t protect their sources, then no source will ever trust them with valuable information. Thus the major door of accountability of our government has just been shut, and our first amendment just got a lot weaker. We’ve seen many attacks on our freedoms over the years, the drug war essentially wiped out the 4th and 10th amendments, and the US PATRIOT Act has obliterated many other parts of the bill of rights. And in recent years, as in this year's DNC, peaceful protest are being put into free-speech zones which resemble a Guantonomo Detention Center . Thus freedom of assembly has been effectively wiped out as well. There is a reason why the 1st amendment is the FIRST. It is the most important right we have. Without it we are no longer a free society. So I ask you, what is the point of all this psychedelic futurist talk? What is the point of this blog – what good is it anymore? What is the point of all the visionaries, the insights, and all our drug-inspired visions, if all around us everything we hold dear, all of our hopes, dreams and visions of a better world seem to be rapidly becoming moot in the this "new world of terror". Terror indeed, just not from terrorists.
