http://www.paulgraham.com/hundred.html
April 2003
(This essay is derived from a keynote talk at PyCon 2003.)
It's hard to predict what life will be like in a hundred years. There are only a few things we can say with certainty. We know that everyone will drive flying cars, that zoning laws will be relaxed to allow buildings hundreds of stories tall, that it will be dark most of the time, and that women will all be trained in the martial arts. Here I want to zoom in on one detail of this picture. What kind of programming language will they use to write the software controlling those flying cars?
This is worth thinking about not so much because we'll actually get to use these languages as because, if we're lucky, we'll use languages on the path from this point to that.
I think that, like species, languages will form evolutionary trees, with dead-ends branching off all over. We can see this happening already. Cobol, for all its sometime popularity, does not seem to have any intellectual descendants. It is an evolutionary dead-end a Neanderthal language.
I predict a similar fate for Java. People sometimes send me mail saying, "How can you say that Java won't turn out to be a successful language? It's already a successful language." And I admit that it is, if you measure success by shelf space taken up by books on it (particularly individual books on it), or by the number of undergrads who believe they have to learn it to get a job. When I say Java won't turn out to be a successful language, I mean something more specific: that Java will turn out to be an evolutionary dead-end, like Cobol.

Visual Basic Programming for OR Catalogue Entry
This module assumes knowledge of the basic concepts of spreadsheets and how they can be used to manipulate information. It then builds on this to cover the automation of tasks using macros and the use of Visual Basic programming within Microsoft Excel, thus enabling the construction of customised, user-friendly interfaces for a spreadsheet. A variety of Operational Research problems are used as the basis for this module, although no prior knowledge of OR is required. Topics covered include simulation, logical programming ideas and debugging. This module can be taken successfully by any student who is prepared to learn the basics of computer programming, and who wishes to learn some practical problem solving skills which may be of benefit in future employment.

TrackBack Print E-mail TalkBack OXFORD, EnglandThe creator of the C++ programming language claims there has been a backlash against some of the newer programming languages such as Java and C#, with developers moving back to using C++. ACCU Conference it is a misperception that C++ is being overtaken by newer languages such as Java and C#. "C++ is bigger than ever," Stroustrup said. "There are more than 3 million C++ programmers. Everywhere I look there has been an uprisingmore and more projects are using C++. A lot of teaching was going to Java, but more are teaching C++ again. There has been a backlash." He claimed the main reason why people are not aware of this is because C++ doesn't have a "propaganda campaign." Sun Microsystems has touted the use of Java in the Mars Rover program , for example, but Stroustrup asserts that C++ was also used. For example, C++ was used for scene analysis and route planning in the Mars Rover autonomous driving system, according to Stroustrup.

Health Access Projects Health Access News The Challenge With the arrival of the digital age has come a flood of health information on the Internet, and at the same time, changes in the health care system have shifted the burden of health education from doctor to patient. Individuals and community health organizations are seeking answers to their health questions outside the doctor's office and encountering a bewildering array of information that is often out-of-date, inaccessible, biased or conflicting. The Strategy Health Access is a model for building partnerships among libraries and local organizations and agencies with the goal of promoting healthy communities and increasing awareness and use of library resources for prevention and wellness. The program is built on the idea that health literacy, or the ability to read, understand and use health information, is the key to improving health, and that libraries are a critical partner in the effort to address health literacy and provide quality, understandable health information.

To those who know me this will come as no surprise, but I won an iRiver H10 5 GB MP3 player at PDC. When you complete an evaluation of a session you have a chance of winning. At the second to last session I won. I actually almost went to lunch with someone instead, but we rescheduled. I'll post a review later. So far I am impressed - nice small form factor, great color display and every feature you can imagine. Even came preloaded with some MP3's to listen to. . . . Visit my BASIC Programming Page for help with Mac BASIC programming. The following BASIC environments are listed in order of my recommendation.
    • Staz Software's FutureBASIC 3 - FB 3 creates 68k, PPC, Fat , or Carbon (OS 9 and X) applications. It has full access to the Mac toolbox. FutureBASIC is the programming environment that I use and personally recommend. It comes bundled with Program Generator which lets you visually create much of your code if you decide to use it. The CD also includes lots of online help, lots of sample code, ResEdit, MacsBug, and more. FutureBASIC 3 costs $169. Visit the Staz web site for more information. A 30 day trial demo version is available at their web site.
    • REAL Software's REALbasic - A visual, object-oriented BASIC language environment. Builds powerful Macintosh applications quickly and easily, without learning lots of cryptic programming code. The Professional Edition can even compile Windows applications. If you like Microsoft's Visual Basic and wish there was a Macintosh version, then check out REALbasic. The Standard Edition sells for as low as $99.95 for a download version and $149.95 for CD version. The Professional Edition costs $399.95 for the downloaded edition and $449.95 for the CD edition. Both Standard and Professional Editions have download versions available with free updates for 1 year for an added fee. A 30 day trial demo version is available at their web site.

Today's Basic languages for the Mac are very powerful and can include on-line help. They can create programs that are as fast as C based programs and that are very compact - a perfect combo for creating a program for that 10 or 15 year old Mac (that may have limited RAM and hard drive space) to control that green house and hydroponics garden with your LynX controller.
