Posted Jun 17, 2005, 1:42 PM ET by Martey If you were working in the Sahara, maybe a solar cell would be more cheaper and more useful? Posted Jun 17, 2005, 2:01 PM ET by This is better Hmm, I believe this is better than solar cells. Maybe not cheaper, but better as in more useful and environmental. Solar cells still have a high environmental cost to manufacture. And they only work during the day, so you also need to carry around batteries (not so environmental either) to charge up for night time. And yeah, they might work in Sahara, but what about in Antarctica or deep in a Northern forest?
Overall this is great news! Yeah it's expensive, but so were the first VCRs. Too bad there are no details on running costs and how long each charge lasts.

TrackBack Print E-mail TalkBack The U.S. Department of Energy will spend millions of dollars to help develop hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and raise public awareness about the technology that drives them. The agency on Wednesday announced two separate five-year fuel cell agreements: an $88 million pact with General Motors and a $70 million deal with DaimlerChysler. The Energy Department said it wants the programs to foster technology development and raise awareness about the vehicles, whose fuel cells use hydrogen to generate electricity that propels them. Many drivers are eyeing fuel cells as a potential replacement for gasoline engines in automobiles. Gasoline prices have shot up lately and now top $2.15

Homepage-Index Hello , my name is Ben Wiens and I am an applied energy scientist . In my work as a consultant and writer I have come across a lot of complicated information about energy over the years. Actually a lot of Energy Science can be understood minus all the scientific jargon and complex formulaes. So I decided making energy science easy to understand would be "my thing". Whether you have an advanced degree in science or just an average person interested in energy, I have tried to include a little of everything in the following web-booklets To attract consulting and writing work, to encourage energy education , get feedback on topics, and many will be condensed versions of books for sale in the future. Level numbers such as indicate the minimum years of formal science education that are generally required to reasonably understand booklets. Energy Science Made Simple
Advanced concepts such as thermodynamics entropy relativity quantum mechanics quantum field theory , and string theories are difficult to comprehend. Often complicated formulas and scientific jargon are used. In this book advanced concepts of energy are presented in a reasonably uncomplicated way.

shows how a fuel cell works. If we were inventing the automobile today, instead of 100 years ago, what might we do differently? How might we approach mobility while considering sustainability? GM believes the answer is hydrogen power. The secret to harnessing hydrogen's power is the fuel cell, which produces a continuous electrical current directly by the oxidation of a fuel. When that fuel is hydrogen, the fuel cell's only emissions are water vapor and heat. The power produced can be used to run electric motors. Christopher Borroni-Bird, head of GM's Design and Technology Fusion Group, explains how fuel cells can impact vehicle design. "They don't have to be bunched together like the cylinders of today's internal combustion engines. They can virtually be spread around the vehicle and take any shape you can imagine."

133. The Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cell
If a fuel cell is designed to operate also in reverse as an electrolyzer, then electricity can be used to convert the water back into hydrogen and oxygen.
http://www.llnl.gov/str/Mitlit.html
SCIENTISTS are searching for cleaner ways to power vehicles and to make better use of domestic energy resources. The fuel cell, an electrochemical device that converts the chemical energy of a fuel directly to usable energy without combustion, is one of the most promising of these new technologies. Running on hydrogen fuel and oxygen from the air, a 50-kilowatt fuel cell can power a lightweight car without creating any undesirable tailpipe emissions.
If the fuel cell is designed to operate also in reverse as an electrolyzer, then electricity can be used to convert the water back into hydrogen and oxygen. (See Figure 1.) This dual-function system is known as a reversible or unitized regenerative fuel cell (URFC). Lighter than a separate electrolyzer and generator, a URFC is an excellent energy source in situations where weight is a concern.
The Prototype
Fuel cells have been used since the 1960s when they supplied on-board power for the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft. Today, fuel cells are being used for Space Shuttle on-board power, power plants, and a variety of experimental vehicles. However, none of these applications uses the URFC because early experience did not uncover the usefulness of the reversible technology, and little research had been funded. Recent results of Livermore research indicate otherwise, based on more thorough systems engineering and improved membrane technology.
Challenged by a lack of information on the technology, Livermore physicist Fred Mitlitsky was determined to uncover just how to make the combination of technologies work. Mitlitsky continued in 1994 with a little funding from NASA for development of Helios and from the Department of Energy for leveling peak and intermittent power usage with sources such as solar cells or wind turbines. (See Figure 2.)
